Question for those that haves etup home networks:

I want to share my printer out at home between the pc and laptop so we can print from the laptop instead of tranmsfering to media key everytime and don't want to pay for a wireless USB printer adaptor so thought I may as well setup a "home network".

Obviously setting up within XP is relatively simple (I think)  but do I have to make both pc and laptop wireless to get it going ?
The mrs currently uses the laptop wireless for internet to go to the wireless router and the pc is connected via ethernet to the router.

Any advice appreciated obviously.

As long as both machines are connected to the same network, and as long as the PC with the printer is turned on, you will be fine. Use any combination of wired and wireless connectors you like.

I sometimes send stuff to the printer on my mum's laptop to scare her. Mwahahahaha.

Check your router, it may have a USB port you can pluf t'printer straight into...

Fair point, but be aware it may also have a USB port that can only be used to connect it to a PC. So that may not work (check the manual).

I'm 99% sure the router does not have a USB port, I was looking at getting a printer adaptor and then suddenly realised about setting up the 'home network' - looks like my project for the weekend then !!

I am right is assuming setting this up is a peice of piss (although I should know how to do it !) ?

If the firewall installed on the PC(s) blocks the ports, here is a simple guide to opening them (assumes Windows XP built in firewall). IIRC the windows firewall has a built in "printer and file share" tickbox in one of the tabs.

I use Norton Internet Security, hopefully that won't block anything

It probably will, i've always classed symantec with AOL i.e. borderline virus, any sort of issue disable and make sure you are off line when doing any installing

I was about to post a message and say that this dosen't work but after trying this a couple of times it now seems to be working...hooray

This now saves the Mrs hassling me to print for her !!
