Tough call....I take Arriba's point that Hoddle didn't actually play midfield for us.
If Hoddle gets in it has to be as libero, then the full backs are chosen accordingly.
If its 4-4-2 then I think Chris Kamara and Ray McHale would be as good as anything.
Mickey Hazard is another worthy of consideration. If you want a sort of goalscoring nmidfield player then Alan Mac is worth a shout, but Ernie Hunt....was several classes above.

Hoddle and Alan Mac for me. A bit lightweight in the tackle. Just about all of our successful sides have had an anchor man in midfield.....the 69 side had Joe Butler. Now Joe doesn't get too many plaudits, but he was a tremendous player. He was converted from left back, where he was a sort of Sol Davis type, loved a tackle, was useful in distributing the ball short, but not the best getting forward....a great team player. The other 2 Wembley winning sides had Ross McClaren who did a similar job. If you play two wingers then the midfield has to be a bit more rugged. Chris Kamara definitely mixed the rose and fisted glove, Ray McHale looked after himself. Steve Foley is worth a shout, but doesn't quite get above Kammy and McHale. |

Spoilt for choice. Kamara was a really exciting discovery at the time. Mchale used to mix it and is legendary because of Gillingham encounters. Hoddle by far the best passer of a ball and Moncur also a great playmaker. Would go for Kamara and Mchale only because the further back you go, the better they seem to be in your memory

Whatever you may think of McMahon as a manager or as a person come to that, he was fantastic for us during that 95/96 Div 2 Champions season.
