Former South African international Phil Masinga, an ambassador for South Africa's bid to host the FIFA 2010 World Cup, appeared in court today on charges of drink driving, assault and resisting arrest.

Masinga is accused of crashing his white BMW 735i into another vehicle at 3 a.m. on Saturday and then assaulting its driver, Inspector Sam Tselanyane, of North West province police, told Reuters.

Masinga, 35, whose goal against the Republic of Congo took South Africa to their first post-apartheid World Cup in France in 1998, also faces charges reckless or negligent driving and of obstructing the police in the execution of their duties.

He was released on 500 Rand ($82.71) bail on Saturday.

Masinga was an ambassador of South Africa's successful bid to host the 2010 World Cup, appearing before the media alongside bid chief executive Danny Jordaan during the bid's preparation.

South African Football Association officials could not be reached on Monday to confirm whether Masinga would have any role in the organisation of the 2010 tournament.
