   Before the time of most on here, but the Doog was a bit of a character.

   He got dropped from the Blackburn team, before the 1960 Cup Final for shaving his head.
   
  He was part of the panel of pundits on ITV during the 70 World Cup...along with Malcolm Allison and Paddy Crerand...(Bob McNab as well)  Allison smoked huge Havanas and they had genuine pub style arguments abouit players and matches....TV producers promptly sanitised football punditry.

Yep, bit of a shock that one. I was brought up, in football terms, on players like Derek Dougan.

One of my early football memories is of Wolves winning the League Cup in 1974. Dougan and John Richards were up front. Willy Carr, Kenny Hibbit and Jim McCalliog (I think) were in midfield and also remember Derek Parkin was at the back. I think Gary Pearce was in goal and Bill McGarry was the manager.

Hard to imagine now that the League Cup Final was not televised live and you had to wait until about 2.30 on the Sunday afternoon for the highlights on 'The Big Match'.

Sad news indeed.

  There's something to be said for wall to wall coverage as the opium of the people....I'm not immune to slobbing out in front of a few games on some dank winter Sunday.

  But the rarity of TV coverage back then certainly made it seem more exciting.....another thing that strikes me is that players legs were more spindly then.....not as spindly as the spindly killer fish, mind

Alas, so few characters left in the game these days, no Rodney Marsh's, no Alan Hudson's - not even a Gazza -  just a bunch of sanitised, money grabbing pricks.  RIP the Doog!!

  I don't know about that....maybe not so many at the top end, but there are plenty of characters kicking around the lower leagues.....like our very own Lee Peacock.

  Dean Windass, is another who although being tainted by spending time with the Scum, seems to care.

  I'm sure we can think of a feww more.

Agree that at the top end it isn't commercially attractive to be a 'character' and most left in the league are heading towards the autumns of their careers.  Its a shame more younger players aren't a little more eccentric.

The Cock and Windass are not, unfortunately, who I was thinking of.  Dougan, Marsh and the like played at the very top of the tree but still had the time and sense to be personalities in their own right!  Skill wise a lot of players today may be better, but they are still money-grabbing pricks in my opinion, people like them will ruin the game that yourself, Reg, and myself have loved for years. :old:

Couldn't believe the Doog was in his seventieth year.  A great entertainer, used to always look really pissed off when a cross went astray.  Actually, on the field, he usually looked pissed off.  Great presence on the field, he seemed to stroll around like he owned the place, refs. seemed to be a little intimidated by him.  

If memory serves, after his playing days, he was instrumental in reserecting Wolves out of the old Div. IV, when they were in financial dire straits.  He obviously gave a shit, probably his epitath.

I remember that too; they'd gone down in 3 seasons from the 1st to the 4th and were close to going bust and he stepped in to stop them going out of business.
