Im sure theres a reasonable explenation to it but i just done get it.

"England Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce has expressed his disappointment at David Bentley's decision to withdraw from the squad with fatigue.
The 22-year-old Blackburn winger was in the squad ahead of the Under-21 European Championship in Holland. "

I think you're allowed to play if you are 21 or under at the start of the season.

But i agree, it's hardly under 21

if you're 21 at the start of the season then you can continue playing up until the end of the season.

i also think there might be an allowance that you can include 3 players over 21 years old in the squad but at this point i'm probably getting mixed up with netball or rounders or something like that.

still doesn't explain why 21 year olds are allowed to play in the under 21's though...

So how long can a player keep playing for te under 21's if reo-coker is still playing for them? I think its 23?

Anyone else think players shouldn't be allowed to play for the full national team until they are over 21?

I know player like Rooney and Owen broke through earlier, but would they get more experience playing in under 21 championships etc giving them better grounding for when they graduate to full international level? Would also give the under 21's a better chance of winning stuff.

You have to be 21 at the start of the qualifying campaign. As that can take up to two years, it means some players are 23 by the time of the tournament.

Does that mean Teddy Sheringham could play for the under 21s as one of the three players?
