Couple of questions.

firstly, when trying to open 'windows explorer' through the shortcut (windows + E) it seems to take ages to open up. Approx 10 seconds. Where as on other PC's of similar or even lower spec than mine it opens almost instantly.

Why is mine slow and can i sort it out??

Secondly, when i close down my pc i have an 'end programme' message come up with is for a 'Cdirectorywatcherchanger.....'
i have no idea what this is and even doing a search/virus scan nothing is found. Would this be part of McAfee Security do you think?? If not then any ideas and how do i get rid?

cheers

sounds like spyware to me. download ad-aware and do a scan in safe mode. Should sort it.

Not sure about the explorer thing - it may be a symptom of the same problem.

Yeah do the F8 for safe mode.

Windows explorer tends to be slow when your computer is using a lot of its resources (like memory/processor time). Sounds like it could be a spyware problem, or you are running shit loads of background tasks. Are there a lot of icons in the system tray (next to the clock)?

Can't find anything out about the watcherchanger thing, but it sounds to me like one of those watcher programs (like weather watcher) that sits there running and using all your resources. Have you got a changing desktop (this might be what it is).

If you still have problems let me know, hijack this can give you a log of all your running processes and tells you what's dodgy so you can then remove it. I can tell you what to do if needs be.

A few unknown things maybe only a couple are dodgy. McAffee does seem to have an obscene amount of processes though. If I were you I would do a scan in safe mode and if you still have trouble try turning system restore off, go into safe mode and do the virus/spyware checks again. Remember to turn system restore back on though!

By the way, you haven't got the most recent service pack for windows. Maybe why you are getting more crap on your pc?

yeah it's the latest virus stuff which i always get updated from Mcafee which seem to be clogging everything up.

I have done the scans in safe mode which didn't come up with anything.

Have you disabled system restore? Sometimes the cunts store crap in there and it won't get removed by scanners. Only by disabling it will you delete it. Trouble is all you restore points go as well.

Have you defragmented your hard drive at all?

Magic. I have a suspicion that it's your mcafee that is scanning things as it opens them in explorer thus slowing it down greatly. If you want to risk it then I would say disable mcafee temporarily and try and open explorer. See if it is quicker but do not open anything and I would also keep your firewall on as well.

If it's quicker then that's your answer.
