Evans poised to quit the County Ground
27th May 2006

EXCLUSIVE
RHYS Evans is poised to quit the County Ground and sign for Blackpool next week after accepting a new challenge with the Seasiders.
The Swindon Advertiser understands that the 24-year-old will travel north to pen a two-year contract at Bloomfield Road after the Bank Holiday weekend.
Evans has been weighing up his options for some time, stressing how important it was that he made the right decision at a key stage in his career.
After considerable soul-searching it now looks certain that Evans will decide to uproot and leave his home town behind after three seasons at the County Ground.
Evans picked up five player of the year awards for his efforts during the 2005-6 campaign, despite missing a significant chunk of the season through injury.
He had been offered a new deal by Town but admitted it wasn not to his liking.
An improved deal has not been forthcoming at this stage and Evans has decided that he needs to address his future now.
The arrival of Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet, former Chelsea colleagues of the Swindonian, led some fans to conclude that such a development would be enough to secure the player’s signature but that does not appear to be the case.
If all goes ahead as expected then it will leave new boss Wise having to find not one but two goalkeepers when he returns from his Dubai holiday.
Reserve keeper Matt Bulman was among those released by Iffy Onuora at the end of the last campaign.
And should Evans depart then it just leaves the club with youth team custodian Jon Stewart in the goalkeeping department.
Evans was unavailable for comment as the Advertiser went to press.

I can't say I would have been particularly upset to see any of our current squad leave (maybe peacock as every team needs a player like that, and yes, I know he's still got to prove himself).  Rhys has done well enough and I wish him luck.

Im fully confident that we can bring an equally as good, if not better keeper then Evans.  I'm sure Wise has analysed the tapes and watched the video and come to the same conclusion as me   -  Evans is a good shot stopper, but his distribtion of the ball is piss poor.  I'm confident we can get a better keeper anyway   Cheesy

His loss in the long term. With or without some Latvian mush with a few quid, Blackpool will always be perenial underachievers.

Poglicomi on a free anyone?!

He'd be a good signing, ive always rated him and during the PO year when we gave him shit all game he turned round at the end and said "Good luck in the Play Offs".

I wish him the best of luck and his handling of the whole thing has been first class.

Not really sure Blackpoo is the best career move but could prove to be a good stepping stone for him.

Not sure on replacements really.  Keepers are a bit like managers in some respects the ones out of work are usually out of work for a reason while the untried are a gamble.

I'm still hopefuly, the sooner we offer him a revised deal the better....seems we are leaving it too late though.

Think that's making the worst of the situation, he wouldn't be accepting anything else just yet from his comments today, just putting a little extra pressure on to get the revised deal through

Andy Marshall as a possible replacement?  Wise had him at Millwall, and he's always seemed a fairly decent keeper.

I hope we don't get Pogliacomi - he's not the keeper he was a few years ago.  He might be ok as a number 2.

Its on the back of the daily press too, all the best to him. He's stuck by us and has never struck me as being the greedy arrogant type, he is just doing whats best for his footballing career now and he's been a good player for us. I think as much as I did'nt think he was that bad a player, a change is in order anyway and adds to the excitement! It will be so odd seeing someone else in goal, for so long Rhys has been there!  Cheesy

Good luck to Rhys and his family.

Blackpool smells of wee and sick.

I know, I find it quite strange too. Blackpool is absolutely ages away, he has a young family and they're moving all the way up there away from friends and family- its a big thing. Thought Rhys would stay a bit local, at first I was almost certain he'd go to city. Just hope it all works out for him.
