Would have done well until he got injured, then we'd have been in the shit.  Like we are now.

I'm happy the bloke moved, good to see someone's career progress, as it will when he returns from injury.

Now what about if Alan McLoughlin had never left?  Would we still be struggling then?

Alan Mac, Horlock, Moncur and Ling could have all played together with Digby, Calderwood, Taylor, Gittens, Kerslake, Hoddle, Bodin, Summerbee, Shearer, White and Maskell.  That would have been a pretty good team in the Prem.  All at their peaks within a 3 year period probably.

Especially as you'ver names 15 players.  I'm sure there's a rule about that.

White was never Prem class, brilliant lower league but never top level.  Nor was Maskell really.

I would have liked to have seen Chalky in the top flight earlier in his career though, to see if he would have done better.

I agree with you about Maskell too. 25 goals (i think) in the 92-93 season, then after that his career seemed to peter out, didn't do much at Southampton from memory. Whereas if he'd stuck in Div 1 (as it was at the time) he'd have probably done better.

But then he wanted to see if he could perform at the top level. And I will never ever forget his goal in the play off final. I was right behind the goal, and the sound of the ball hitting the post sends chivers up my spine thinking about it even now.

That sound is one of the greatest noises I have ever heard in my life.
