Is it your handbrake cable or the lever that you need? The lever controls the cable which when tightened stops the car from rolling.

ah, handbrake turns, not done any in my mazda cos i dont want to break it, but in my first car, a lil Nova, they were ace, i got quite good at parking in tescos carpark spaces.
