There are always players in the squad that won't play much (if at all).

Instead of taking older players in those positions, why not take a couple of youngsters who will (in all likelihood) be in the squad for the next world cup.

However, for your starting 11 & 5(isn) subs you have to take the best players available.
Like it or not Gerrard & Rooney are most definitely in that group.
