If I am faced with somebody trying to make cheesy false conversation with me, I just pretend I can't speak Thai. (Provided it's a Thai, of course)

I'm getting to the stage now where the wife & kids get scared if they see me not enjoying a meal. They know I'm going to complain, and get really embarrassed by it. I dont see it like that though - if service is crap or food is badly cooked, I'm sure the manager would want to know about it so he can stop it happening again. If everything gets brushed under the carpet, the business will ultimately fail as people continually wont recommend it and wont go back.

And I've got a few free meals from complaining :-)

I find complaining about food pretty pointless. If you send it back the chef will probably wipe his cock on your steak or something anyway. Best to bite the bullet, not tip and just not go back to said establishment.
