I am well gutted today.

We had a maid from Myanmar (Burma) and she was a diamond, she was trustworthy, intelligent, relia-able, hard-working and she loved my duaghter as though she was her own.

However she now has to return to Burma because her sister has died and the chances off her being allowed to return to Thailand are very slim indeed. She was very happy with us here and now she is being made to return to a life of poverty and oppression. Poor village people in Burma are terrorised by their own communist governent being forced to live under appalling conditions and even at times killed as though for sport, basically the poor girl is being forced to throw her whole life away and it makes so fustrated.

It makes me so angry, I am sure that if any of us where her parents then we would advise her to stay here in Thailand where she could live a happy life, yet due to their short-sightedness she has to return.

I know that she could just say no and stay here but it is a completely different culture, in most Asian countries if your family says jump, you say how high without exception.

This happening today has really bought home to me the plight of the poor Burmese people and similar countries world-wide because I got to know the personality of the person, and so I know that a kind and caring person
is being made to live a miserable existence for the rest of her life (She is only 23 yrs old)

All that I can do now is to hope for the best for her and hope that her village is overlooked by the murderous Burmese government.

Wow, what a post.  You hear of things like that happening BR, but you find it hard to put it into context.  All the best to your former maid!!

Why does she have to return Bangkok?

Did her sister have family need taking care of?

Always the international language of hard currency, which usually helps people see the light.

to give you some idea of how fucked up and oppressive the burmese government is... the burmese president/prime minster has had the leader of the democratic opposition under house arrest for the vast majority of the past 10 years.
