I've had my Dell for 18 months now and it's been superb, don't get the Dell bashing?
They used to be a lot worse.

They have had a huge reputation of selling PC's with slightly inferior parts that are borderlin when it comes to breaking so that they break under heavy stressing and have to be replaced.
To be fair to them they do produce a huge amount of PC's and lappys so there will obviously be a percentage that will suffer.
At one point a couple of years ago almost 50% of the PC's I had to fix were Dell or HP and they all use tattooed motherboards so replacing parts with non standard (normal cheap prices) was not possible so you had to replace like for like and not be able to upgrade at all.

Calm down you two.....I have an HP and Compaq (Cheap HP) that have served me fine for 5 years, but I might be looking to replace one soon. Are Sony really worth the premium, or are they much of a muchness too?

Going to tempt fate now by saying I have a: 6 year old HP going fine 5 year old Acer going fine 4 month old Acer going fine
One of the things that I looked at when buying the HP was 'running temperature'. Saw lots of reviews of laptops running hot. Dont know much about computery or electronics, but I do know that heat isnt your friend! Chose a model that doesnt run hot but also bought a cooling pad fan, which keeps it even cooler.

TBH I have had to fix all kinds and makes of laptop but the least amount I see are Toshibas, I had to return an Acer after the disk failed after 2 days last week, but thats the same with all new laptops there is an element of non working items straight out of the box at times, so much solid state hardware these days in them, often difficult to fix without a return to be replacement.
Haven't had too many problems with HP in the last year or so.
