The word 'decimate' comes from a Roman army disciplinary technique, in which upon certain cases of mutiny or cowardice the soldiers would be separated into groups if ten (hence the 'dec), and one soldier will be selected at random to be executed by stoning or clubbing by his nine remaining comrades.

There was some talk of an aquaduct at one point but I have found no evidence of this.  Lazy Roman bastards.
