Well i've only just heard about it. it would seem to be quite old news though

If Jim had called Danny Williams a spear chucker this would obviously have been a reference to his race. However, as he was referring to a javelin thrower it's pretty clear it was just a thougthless choice of words. I think the question you have to ask yourself is "would Jim have described Steve Backley as a spear chucker". My guess is yes and if he had no-one would have thought anything of it. But the phrase is does have those racist conourtations and using it about a black person, even one that made a living chucking spears, is a bit of a gaffe.
