McEveley has been called up into the Scotland team and Im no happy about it. Just wondered what everyone elses opinion would be. Consider if someone had said a similar thing in reverse about england. or if Hargreaves had said a similar sort of thing. how would you feel about it?

Quote
"I have to weigh up my options and Scotland is a possibility," he said.

"I'm looking at the full squad and thinking, 'if I'm playing in the Premiership in a couple of years' time and playing well, am I going to get ahead of Ashley Cole or Wayne Bridge?'

"Even if I was to move across to centre-half, England have half a dozen top-quality players for that position, so again I have to look at that and consider the Scotland option.

Yeah I totally understand why you would be pissed off. He's basically said that Scotland is his last resort and that's unacceptable. We all know that English players who play for other nations only do it because they realistically can't play for England - but there's no need to say it and lose the supporters before you've even put on the shirt.

However, I don't mind the Jocks as my step-dad is Scottish, so I've been brought up without the rivalry.

IMHO he's been brutally honest, apart from Hargreaves the England footy side (not so rugger and cricket) is made up of Englanders, whereas the celtic nations tend to rely on the grannie rule and lower league players.  He'll never be a crowd favourite, but I've never heard of him and have no idea if he'll really enhance you're team or not?  Hargreaves to be fair to him has been very honest and as a bloke I haev a lot of time for him.

Can see where your coming from Will, never understand why a player would make these kind of opinions/comments public.  Does he not realise if he does play for Scotland this kind of statement will haunt him forever.

FWIW tho he is no where near as good as Gary Naysmith so just like England he has no chance of getting in at Scotland, maybe he should check to see if he has any Andorran Grandmothers.

John Barnes? You could almost argue Michael Owen. and then you look at the rugby and cricket teams. Granted that another story, but it does happen both ways. And then you get the arabs trying to give brazillian players a passport  (and a couple of million dollars) after two weeks to get them to play for Quatar or whoever. Its wrong, The granny rule is a generation too far in my opinion. Also thinnk that all players should register the only country they are elligible to play for upon signing their first contract. If you are old enough to sign a contract you should know what nationality you are.

I myself qualify for three countries but would only ever chose one of them and wouldnt even consider the others.

John Barnes is a cert purebread Jamaican - but Owen is very much English IMHO.  In cricket and rugby it is undoubtedly abused - look at the number of Aussies playing international rugby for wales and italy.  The worst is the qatarian govt who just pay athletes from Kenya to switch, it's just not right.

Agree with STA there. I am eligible to play for England or Northern Ireland, but i am English so there's no chance i would play for NI just to play international football. Very hypocritical indeed.

half of the Irish cricket team are Australians. However, at least most of them play club cricket in Ireland and have married Irish women.

all you need in football is a piece of paper and you can play for whatever country you like...

if I was a professional footballer who wasn't going to get in the England side then I'd get into any international side I possibly could.

fucking arsehole sounds like Matt Elliot mark 2.  That Oxford cunt once said(after being in the Scotland world cup squad) "yeah it was good to get away with the Scotland lads for the summer..." he basically went on making it clear he did not consider himself Scottish, therefore the wanker should not have been picked.

Same with this cocksmoker!!
