Fucking final completion date of the end of this week. About the 14th I've had now. Anyway need a TV to celebrate. Browsing... http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/index.asp?bhcp=1and I'm surprised at just how cheap LCD's have become. It's a fucking brilliant cheap site but even still at those prices is LCD on the way out? Even the HD ready models are quite reasonable.

oh yeah and dont bother getting into a discussion about LCD vs plasma. Everyone says LCD but they dont know why. Others say plasma and seem really passionate about it. I went into Dixons and asked this lad and he started yabbering on, then this other lad came in and argued the other side of it. So which is better? I remarked. and they just kind of ignored the question and started talking about tvs a bit more.
Basically they both sound good so who knows.

That's what gets me My brother's just got a 50" odd beast while a chap from work got a builder in so he could accomodate his 42" plasma in the corner of his living room. Then everyone I talk to says make sure it's 'HD ready'. I think people get a bit obsessed with TV's while I tend to just get a bit lost.

yeah HD ready is gonna be great. Its coming out very soon. The geek in Dixons said "the only way I can describe it is to say its just like looking through a window." I snickered under my breath at how much of a loser he was.

'Plasma' makes it sound like you could run the starship enterprise off your fucking tv.
'LCD' just reminds me of those old skool casio digital watches for some reason.

Just started looking at LCD/Plasma TVs so my twopenneth ain't exactly expert! My advidse. Look for reviews and/or a local shop. Try out a few sources if you get a demo, DVD, SKy, Normal TV, etc.
That TV in the link doesn't seem to have any HD/DVI input. If that is not important to you it may be OK.
The main gripes about LCD that I have read is 1: blacks can look grey. 2: Motion blurring. 3: normal sources (TV/Sky) can look cack compaired to normal CRT displays. 4. Colours can be a bit cold or warm. The larger the screen the more you notice it. LCDs are getting better all the time though.
Plasma I read are (generally) currently better on sets over 32 inches than LCDs over 32 inches because they reduce the gripes about LCDs (i.e. blacks are better/motion blurring reduced). They have their own problems, e.g. screen burn (an image is burnt into the plasma and can be seen, eg the Sky Red dot). Not sure about long term lifespan either.
HDTV looks good, but telewest are only just trialling there HD solution and the Sky HD won't be out for a t least 6 months (then you have to buy a new Sky box and possibly pay a subscription). Even then the HDTV content will be limited to a few shows on a few channels. Obviously this will increase over time much like widescreen broadcasts did.
I think the XBOX 360 can make use of high definition screens. Worth checking that the TV can take an xbox 360 in this way (to make use of the high def, not just connected like you would to a normal TV). Assming you have a 360 of course!
Personally I'm waiting because my main use will be Sky HD . That is bound to be cheaper/more content rich in 12-18 months after launch. Hopefully LCD technology will have improved and become cheaper by then.
People who ask for advise in Dixons deserve all they get!

Dazzza, What ever you do , Dont buy from Empire direct, they are the biggest bunch of cunts going, they fucked me around for Twelve weeks , i had to threaten to take them to court to get anything done and then you have to deal with the fucking useless A1 couriers that they use . I cancelled my order in the end and got it next day delivery from Comet for the same price.

Been given ebuyers as a better bet so I'll probably go with them Foggy.
Just talking to one of our engineers and he said he had to wait 12 weeks for his Plasma to turn up. By all accounts they're just a handling agent and don't even keep a physical stock with the goods being shipped direct from the manufacturer.
