If you've only seen the film Ed, definately read the book. It's a whole lot better, and they cut loads out to make it into the film. The London sex cinema scene got completely chopped out * :? *

Trainspotting! You should definitely read it, loads about Leith. Sorry, I meant the sequel!! Ah, sunny Leith, my adopted home! Full of drugs, drunks and other such delights! So good, the Proclaimers wrote a song about it! In Porno spud is trying to write a history of Leith. I need to get back into reading, will try and get a copy of both books. Its quite good reading books based in places that you know about. The detective Rebus novels are set in Edinburgh, in fact Fettes Police Station where Rebus is based is just round here somewhere!

If you've seen The Beach (film) but not read the book, I'd recommend this also. The film is utter crap in comparison and rips the heart out of the book. Oh, lets stick Leo (a yank, ffs) in there as the lead, and completely change the ending too  The book is impressive in the way it makes you build up a picture in your mind of who they are and where they are (the film knackers this completely). Two mates got the urge and did a round the world trip after reading it.

The sequal is called Porno, but Glue and other books by Welsh all have subtle links with various cameos by Spud, Begbie etc.

I own every book by Irvine Welsh, I found having got to grips with the lingo they are very readable, porno is good. Glue I think is an excellent read, as is Filth which very subtley links back to the others. The acid house, ecstacy, and maribou stork nightmares are much more surreal and dark, but the short stories in the acid house make for good reading. If you read glue and like it have a read of Human Punk by John King, who wrote the football factory trilogy, also white trash by him is very entertaining IMHO.

Cheers, I think I'll probably get glue and filth first then.

I also thought Glue and Filth were superb. Filth is very dark mind. If you liked Porno then you'll love Glue.
Anyone read anything by Charles Bukowski? I read his first book Post Office the other day, and really enjoyed it. All the other beat generation stuff I've tried to read I haven't got into.

Filth is a brilliant dark disturbing read.
Not read the book but the Acid House Film is cracking.

A load of mates in edinburgh and it covers their growing up over a number of years, with cameos from trainspotting charcters. Not too sure it was some time since I read it, but if you like the others it's much along the same lines.
