I am going to Buenos Aires later in the year but have no idea how long is sufficient. Given that its 17h from here you must be looking at over a week, but 10 or 14 days ?- can anybody that has been recommend how long to go for? (I now await the 'go forever and stay there' comments Cool

Never been there myself but from what i have heard of it its brilliant. "One of those cities that traps you" was a quote from a friend of mine. So maybe plan for longer rather than shorter.

Enjoy.

Distance wise I'd personally say that you should go for a minimum of two weeks - anything less (depending on flight times and jetlag etc.) you could lose a few days.

Never been but heard good things - although a lot of people I know seem have explored several South American countries in one visit so I'm not sure they actually spent there.

I've been there once and it is a great city to visit but to be fair, I was only there for a couple of days as it was part of a tour of the region.

If you get a chance, try and visit Iguazu Falls.  It is a short internal flight which wasn't expensive (2 years ago) and you will not be disappointed.

My dad went and said it was he mainly remmembers the smog and the meat. You could see the smog rising, and had to shut hotel windows in the afternoon because it was so thick. Meat because that is mostly their diet, great big mountains of it with a tiny amount of potato's on the side. He said they got so sick of such a meaty diet they went to seafood restaurant and got really really ill.

That was late 90s, and it was purely a business trip.

You should definitely go to a River Plate or Boca Juniors game. Or even when they are playing each other Hmmm I think that gets decidedly hairy though. More so then even an Old Firm game. And that's saying something.

I also was only there for a few days but it is a good place to visit - but that is for exactly the same reason why the whole of Argentina is great - good meat, good beer, good wine. It probably isn't as cheap as a few years back but it isn't a costly place either way. It's very European compared to the rest of the continent-almost Italian in attitude.

Also I missed the Superclassico by one day but there are about 17 clubs in the city. With matches, especially at Boca, the advice usually given is don't take anything you aren't prepared to lose. In general it feels pretty safe though around the centre, but like anywhere, it gets rougher.

If you are looking for a short trip cross the River Plate to Montevideo. I didn't but should have.
Also if you do need to get away, BA is a long way from the mountains etc but if you do fancy it, Argentina's coaches are cheap and actually far better than you get anywhere else - bar Chile. Andesmar are probably the best.
