Anyone know what I need to do to ensure I receive no emails or anything whatsoever regarding data when abroad?

I've gone into Settings > General > Network > Data roaming off but last time I went away my emails continued to come through and cost me money (as the data roaming 'off' is set as default on the iphone).

Lots of stories about lately though of people turning off data roaming but still running up high bills. My advice would be to leave the phone in airplane mode unless you need it on to accept calls or texts.

Definately airplane mode is the way forward. I 'lost' £15 of credit in 20 mins whilst abroad recently.

This is not filling me with confidence. I have only just turned my Cellular data off after reading this thread, ive been away 2 weeks now.

I checked it was on the default 'Roaming - Off' setting, and had no trouble... must be luck of the draw.

There is a cap on data roaming charges within the EU of €50 (or £40). To be on the safe side it's worth turning off automatic email downloading when your abroad, then just do it manually when you're on Wifi.

It's criminal what they charge for data roaming in the EU though. In the UK O2 charge no more than £10 for 500Mb of data, yet in the EU it's £3 per Mb even in Spain (and other countries) where O2 have a network as well. Wankers.
