looking to purchase some golf clubs as much cheaper from across the water....however, whats the damage on duty? anyone done it?

There's different rates dependent on what the goods are. You're definitely looking at paying VAT then there might be an additional import duty as well. There is a list with the import duty rates on the net somewhere, you should be able to find it with a bit of Googling.

That is if they catch it. I imported some toys from Japan a few years back, first time I didn't have to pay anything and the second time (pretty much the same products) I got hit for £200. It's all a bit hit and miss but best to bank on paying the maximum.

Anything over £18, you're looking to paying VAT plus a £8 Royal Mail charge.

I used to buy regularly from US eBay and if they mark it as a gift you'll often avoid tax, or at least that's how it used to be - I think! Although saying that i have been stung on several occasions, for whatever reason and it always makes my blood boil, because it's fucking shit loads. I think I had to pay over £30 once for something that cost me £100. I wanted to set fire to HMRC. All things being good one day I will.
