Vale isn't really their name though, isn't Port Vale the place?
no such place as port vale. Well not strictly anyway

Port Vale is the only football league club name not based in any way on the location of the club

Arsenal?Huh?Huh?

It happens more in Scotland though.  Hibernian, Queen of the South erm...
Raith Rovers. Celtic, Rangers, St Johnstone, Albion Rovers, St Mirren. Go into Junior football and there are hunners of them

Aren't they called Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers though? Or am I making that up because I'm a 'stupid englishman'? In Germany they call Arsenal 'London Arsenal'. Or was it 'Arsenal London'? Something like that!

Didn't know that about St J's

"Football was becoming more popular... .... it was St. Johnstone that became the club most associated with the town that gave the club its name. (In the Middle Ages, Perth was colloquially known as 'St. John's Toun' because the church at the centre of the parish was dedicated to St. John the Baptist."

And St Mirren

"They are named after Saint Mirin the founder of a church at the site of Paisley Abbey and Patron Saint of Paisley."
