I need a bit of advice from you well traveled driver's out there,Im off on holiday for two weeks sunday, down in Somerset & Devon.I've never driven to Exeter or Plymouth and i wont be this time due to an eye operation but the mrs will be driving.
The problem is some cunt wrote our car off a month or so a go,so we had to get a car pretty quick for the holiday, the car we got has not got power steering so it can be awkward at times for parking etc.
My question is what's the road layout's like going into exeter and plymouth and what's the parking like (bearing in mind this is the summer holidays),I dont really want to put her into any awkward situation's especially with no power steering as i know what big city's can be like at times.
Would catching the train be better.
i would be greatful for any advice.

She'll soon get used to no power steering. It wasn't so long ago that no cars had it ! The real difference is you can't really turn the wheels unless you are moving.
I would describe Exeter as a large town rather than a large city. About the same size or smaller then Swindon. Plymouth is a bit larger but not too difficult.
Mind you it's over 10 yeras since I've been to either so I could be out of date.
Tip of the day .. Get the missus to be doing press up's to strengthen her arm muscles.

Thank's for you're help phil,I here what you say about press ups,the mrs is petite that's why she struggles a bit without the power steering, maybe getting there early is the best option.
Batch Only 30'000 on the clock one lady owner who went from village to village in wales it's a cheap option until next year, you dont really appreciate power steering until you've lost it.

You could turn it to your advantage Russ - "Yes, I know love, it's a chore for me too, but we're going to need to keep doing those exercises to strengthen your wrists. Ooooh, not so fast"

Not been to Plymouth for years, but went to Exeter properly for the first time a few months back, nice little city. I'd suggest the park & rides as a good option for getting into the city centre - plenty of room to park and located right off the M5 junction (the same one as Exeter services) and saves you having to queue up to get into the city.

Catching the train is would be expensive Russ...if you want to take the stress out hiring a small car may be an option...get some good deals but to be fair if you allow yourselfabit of extra time to park up each time i would just take the car you have.

Press up's and hand motions this holiday is sounding better by the minute Not been to Plymouth for years, but went to Exeter properly for the first time a few months back, nice little city. That sound's like the best idea cheers pumbaa. Catching the train is would be expensive Russ...if you want to take the stress out hiring a small car may be an option...get some good deals but to be fair if you allow yourselfabit of extra time to park up each time i would just take the car you have.
The train would be from Highbridge (burnham-on-sea) but will still be expensive i imagine.

Just rang them leefer a single return is £14.50 off peak to Exeter and £29.50 to plymouth. Pretty reasonable considering the time of year. I think we'll use the park and ride for Exeter and go by train to Plymouth. Thanks to everyone for the advice and help

Hey leefer found out from a nice looking bird and weston s mare station,if you get you're tickets in two parts you get it cheaper, three of us went from highbridge to plymouth for £64 off peak return the same day,Im not sure how it works out cheaper but the way you do it,buy you're tickets from highbridge to taunton and then taunton to plymouth, rather than highbridge to plymouth on one ticket. We could have had it cheaper had we stuck to first great western trains and not alternated between them and arriva crosscountry service's. Thought this may help a few of you if you have change trains to any away games, always go from A to B then C to D. plymouth was a great day out,the sea aquarium is worth a look.
