but it always starts on the first weekened in august?

Back in the day, the season used to start at the back end of August....during the 90's it crept forward to maybe mid August,  then at the end of the 90's it started kicking off first week of August.

Personally I prefered a decent break, which would allow a chap to play cricket as well as football....the last of that breed I suppose was Phil Neale who turned out for Worcs and Lincoln City.

A good sportsman like Jim Standen, could win a cup final medal with West Ham and then be a major wicket taker for Worcs and win the County Championship in the same season.

Chris Balderstone of Yorkshire and Carlisle Utd. was another example, I wasn't around when Dennis Compton was playing.

I think the TBC will be Everton, we was supposed to be playing Leeds as part of the Wise compo deal but Sturrock decided he didn't want to pay them as he don't want to play teams in the same league for pre-season.

It's nice to have weekends free and not constantly worried what the score is if you're not at the match.
