Was chatting to my Dad at the weekend and we wanted to know why 4 teams are promoted from League 2 / relegated from League 1 when all the other divisions its 3 up & down?

Anyone know?  The only thing I could think of was that it might be something to do with when Div 4 was split into North / South (2 up from each division?)

I think ot was to do with creating more excitement in the lower leagues.  The financial  implications of playing in league 2 or league 1 are not the same as the Premiership and the Championship so you can afford to open the contest out a bit more.  Imagine what the chairmaen of Wigan, West Ham and Fulham would have to say if it was 3 down from the Premiership!  Just a guess mind but I think I'm on the right lines

It was because there was only 1 relegation spot from the football league to the conference. The extra promotion place kept the season alive for a lot more clubs in the middle of division 3.

I think its time it was scrapped though. Too many shit teams in with a chance every year at the play offs, when they havent even played well over the season. The div 3 play offs dont create anywhere near the same excitement as the div 2 ones. It would make it more exclusive and more worthwild.

To be honest if we were in the play offs come the end of the season I'd be pretty excited about them, despite my disappointment of not going up in the auto's.

The notion of 3 down in the Prem makes me feel cold.
