madlib doesn't make 'rap crap' (its hip hop anyway, not rap), he's heavily influenced by jazz, reggae, electronica and many other styles. son of otis jackson the soul singer. its not like the rap you hear on the radio, 98% of which is crap. they don't mention women, money or guns once; most of the lyrics are political.

the best you could do would be to give it a go and not be so genre-specific; its all music. the worst that can come of it is that you don't like it, but at least give something new a go before you try to slate it. its a free album after all and you've got to commend them for that, there aren't many artists around who'll give their music away.

You'll have to forgive me but I am old and have found that I don't like rap or hippedy hoppedy or whatever its called. I'll try anything else but not that. I was going to give it a go, but I clicked on the Quasimoto link and realised pretty quickly that it was something I don't like. I just can't get past the fact that hip hop appears to be a string of random sounds stitched together with someone talking over the top of it in an accent that I can't really understand too well.

Quasimoto is quite 'out there', even for hip hop, all of Madlib's stuff tends to be. Fair enough if you gave it a go.

That post sums my feelings about hip hop and rap as well.

I have a Stranglers album called Suite XIV which I haven't listened to yet, any good NMH?

Suite XVI (as in Sweet 16) is the best album they have produced for about 20 years ! I guarantee you won't be disappointed by the  first and last tracks.

Bollox. I love Madlib the bad kid. Oxford have you heard the Lootpack album "Soundpieces: Da Antidote" its the bees knees plus check Dr Octagon as its quite similar in that genre. I dislike people who label hip hop as being "random sounds stitched together with someone talking over the top" as this speaks of naivety and cultural deficiency. Hip hop has many strands and a global audience that is hugely diverse like many other genres of music.

Sorry you dislike me Irish. I have nothing against you at all.

I can assure you that I am not naive and culturally deficient. I actually moved away from Stroud and have lived all around the world amongst many different cultures. I just don't care for that brand of music.

Frankly the popularity of a genre means nothing other than lots of people sharing a taste in music.  Some of the best stuff in my collection is little known, but that doesn't make it less good.  As for hip hop, 'proper' old school stuff like jurasssic 5 etc is great modern gansta rap is pure trash.

You could argue the same about punk music. Repetitive sounds etc etc...

each to their own is my philosophy. Except emo. That's gay.

Yeah not so into Lootpack, I like Quas stuff plus anything MF Doom does. Picked up the King Geedorah album from HMV today, love it.

Got Dr Oc too, my mate saw him live in Cardiff the other month and said he was amazing.

mmm...J5 are the tip of the iceberg though, the most accessible hip hop, the type of group you get into at first and then delve a bit deeper - amazing performers though, saw them at Uni and I've never heard the crowd so loud.
