This is the sort of thing we did (well i think they still do) for Wootton Bassett FC. Like we would go on a tour to Holland, once a year, and play a few of their teams over their (i.e. centre of excellence players   ) and as Chris Kirkland was involved in it all, he made sure they (Dordrecht 90 - Some second division dutch side) had STFC merchandise etc..In one pub we went into, they had STFC flags/scarfs/pictures all over the place  Cool

Well.......it's kind of the same thing....

Ancona had one (disatrous) season in the top flight and finished bottom with 13 points...That was 2003/2004, full staduims every week, you name it....
Then they got relegated and embroiled in financial scandal so were demoted even further to C2...went bankrupt, had a public appeal for money so they could pay the league registration fee and just about made it.

Obviously the crowds have disappeared (only the hardcore and the people at a loose end attend now). There followed a season of mediocrity in C2 (2004/2005) and this season was reasonably successful, ending with a play-off place (unfortunately they lost this over the two legs due some crap refereeing, surprise surprise).... Things seem to be getting better gradually.

They would understand our current plight I think....

Down here in Bournemouth there is already a sort of informal twinning between AFC Bournemouth and Bohemians in Ireland. I think it happened because the Bohemians fans wanted some football to watch during their mid-season break and AFC Bournemouth happened to wear the same colours. Add to that the fact that it's possible to fly very cheaply from Ireland to Bournemouth on Ryanair. I've been to Bournemouth matches when the "bohs" fans have been there and they really add something to the atmosphere with their flags and banners.

I suggest it would be a good idea to "twin" with a club that could be visted on the cheap. For example, if you were to twin with Real Mallorca you could fly down from Bournemouth to watch matches, (sometimes for about a tenner if you booked far enough in advance) and have a weekend in the sun. Alternatively you could follow Murcia and fly down from Southampton.

Have a look at the regional airports like Bristol, Luton, Southampton and Bournemouth and see where you could fly to on the cheap. Then pick a team that fits the bill.

Scheduled flights by low cost carriers from airports down here on the south coast serve Pisa/Florence,  Murcia, Malaga, Faro, Alicante, Gerona/Barcelona, Palma Mallorca, Ibiza, Tenerife, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Amsterdam,  Paderborn, Berlin,  Angers, Avignon, Berne, Bordeaux, Brest, Brussells, Limoges, Paris, Perpignan, Rennes, Cork, Dublin, Geneva (in winter), Lyon (in winter), Prague (in winter), Salzburg (in winter).

I'm sure there must be a team or two which could be interesting in that lot!
