Title: Best atmosphere you've experienced at a game
Post by: DMR on Wednesday, January 12, 2005, 14:51:22
Me- I was at Liverpool, Kop End 2 years on the eve of the Kop Disaster anniversary.

Best minutes silence (for any event) I've ever seen and then belting out 'you'll never walk alone'

The best atmosphere I've ever experienced by a huge margin was when we won the division one play off final. I've seen England play at wembley several times but the atmosphere was nothing in comparison. The mexican waves were class. At 3-0 up it was incredible, then back at 3-3 very, very tense then ecstatic when we scored the penalty and just mental at the final whistle.   :D  :D  8)  8)  Nothing really comes close.

I remember just jumping up and down on my seat at the end. I fell off at one point but I didn't give a toss I was so happy.

In terms of Swindon fans making an atmosphere, probably Brentford or Notts County away in 95.

For the whole ground probably QPR away last year.

Mines a joint effort. Stoke away last game and Blackburn away playoff first leg in 1990 were something else.  The atmosphere created by town fans was sheer class. We just didnt stop singing. We had about 3000 at Stoke and 4000 at Blackburn. The noise we generated in those games was awesome. It almost brings a tear to the eye just thinking about it. I think everyone knew something special was happening that season. Did anyone else go to those games?

Fucking football league. I fucking still hate them now for what they did to us. I think we may of established ourselves in the top flight if we weren't demoted that season.

vs Brighton, first leg of the play-offs had a brilliant atmosphere last season and Theres allways a good atmosphere in the away end when we go to bristol city :D  To be honest I don't have many memories of games when there has been a really good atmosphere. When I'm older I'm sure I will have. Most of you have been a swindon fan through the premiership days though,I havent :(

The best atmoshere ever has got to be Birmingham 4 Swindon 6.  The noise of the home fans at 4-1 to them was unbearable but when we came back, that is truely one match that I will never ever forget.  The Tranmere away play off game was very special too, as was wembley.  If I had to put them in order in terms of atmosphere though it would be

1. Birmingham
2. Tranmere
3. Wembley

1993 will never be beaten, I wish it could be but that was the greatest season ever.

I saw AC milan v Juventus in 1998 which was quite a tasty atmosphere, but I think you always feel it more if you emotionally involved with one of the teams so I would say

1993 play off final
England 4 Holland 1 Euro 96
England 2 Jocks 0 Euro 96

saw Juve win their 26th title a few years ago, which was a mental atmosphere. conversely, Juve were also my worst atmosphere... attendance of 851 at the Stadio delle Alpi for a Coppa Italia game!!!

Don't remember us exactly hanging on we absolutely mullered them...must have been the most one sided 1-0 in Wembley history.

Agree about the atmosphere......but I suppose I'd have to go for the 69 final.

The 2 back to back 3-0s at Luton and Wycombe were sweet

Other then the big playoff games, when we we beat coventry 3 -1 in the premiership with a jan hat trick, I remember this as the best game we played n the premiership.

other then town games, all England's euro 96 games where heaven sent  4 -1, magic!!!

Another i will never forget is Blackburn at home in the second leg of the 1990 PO semi. The amount of tickertape was unreal. For those that were there from the forum, remember on the pitch at the end singing "We are Ossie's red n' white army" and the north stand singing back at us. Fucking brilliant. I think that night was the only time i have ever really heard the WHOLE north stand sing along with the rest of the ground.

Apart from Wembley, my all time fave was Wycombe away in the season when we won the 2nd div title. We were top of the league, we had filled the stand behind the goal (and part of the 'main' stand) and we were on our feet for 90 mins, non-stop singing... even during half time!
The team played excellently, and all the players came  over after the final whistle and spent ages applauding the fans!

Happy memories!

Agree about the Sunderland game, the most one sided 1-0 ever.  They couldn't have complained if we'd got 5 or 6!  That was without doubt the finest 90 minutes I have witnessed from a Town side.  I seem to recall the atmosphere being a bit flat though, perhaps people had the impending illegal payments case on their mind.  They were of course quite right to be concerned.  An unforgettable period for anyone who was around then.

Going into the Sunderland game the stewards were searching likely looking characters and confiscating bags of tickertape, newspapers etc that may have been ripped up......miserable buggers.

Everyone on my coach had a carrier bag of the stuff. And every one of us had it confiscated. I remeber walking in and seeing all the bags and newspapers tossed to the side. F'in loads of it. It would have been like being at the Argie world cup final had we been allowed to do it.

That was a great atmosphere - I remeber it well now. However - I absolutely shit myself when the ticker tape flew everywhere as it was earlier on that year that the roof was blown off Grange Junior School in the gales (I was in it) and the tickertape reminded me of the falling asbestos... was only a momentary panic, but it still scared the crap out of me!

IF SHE DON'T COME....

You know the rest!  You can get a good idea as to how old people are if they've ever had celery confiscated at a football ground!

It's gotta be about time for the ticker tape to make a 21st century comeback.  If it does happen I'll give it two to three home games before the club ask fans not to through it around, as it affects the pitch or something.

Il bet you were probably about 7 years old at Euro 96 and Il bet you wernt there!

Interesting to see OST mention those two Milk Cup games in 1985, right at the top of the list. Iv got an entire set of programs from that season and it said in them the atmo was unbelievable. 10 years too early for me

Im 22, but I had celery confiscated at Reading away 2002, the 3-1. I got a bird I was with to sneak it in and I threw it on the pitch (one of my lifes ambitions completed!).

Recently Brighton 1st PO leg was very very good, as was Sheff Weds 2003, at least for the first 20 minutes. QPR at home 3-1 02-03. Best 'whole ground' atmosphere was QPR away last season, they were immense. Then Oxford at the Kassam. Its difficult for me to compare the recent games to ones back in the early 90's because I felt a bit more intimidated myself.

It shames me to say it, but two of the best atmospheres I have ever heard at the County came from away fans. Ipswich and Sunderland got 5,000 tickets in 1999 and took the piss.

To be honest it's difficult to pick the best atmosphere, there's been so many.

The days of Shrivvy Road when away fans had the wedge the atmosphere was great almost every week.  I remember being totally surprised by it sometimes. In my first season going to games I went to a West Brom game expecting fuck all. When I turned up I was totally taken aback, I was met with a 12,500 crowd and an electric atmosphere. And that was a 0-0 draw. Quite often it;s best when you least expect it.

Exactly my reaction when we started going. Id say to myself, aged 10, why are so many of these people so excited every week, every game? You could rely on them whatever the game. That was Swindon. The length of the chants was sometimes spellbinding. I wasnt sure if I was a Swindon fan or not at first. After about 3 games in 1992 I knew WHAT I WAS!

My first game was 1992, I had watched loads of football games on TV, but I was completely unprepared for it. It seemed to offer so much more to look at than the telly. I wonder if todays youngsters feel the same way? I hope they do, because the march of Premiership Pub Telly seems almost unstoppable.

I knew the first moment I ever stepped into the CG. I reckon it's still like that for youngsters going for the first time nowadays. You can only hope they discover live footy before they end up being plastic armchair idiots who think they are supporters. God how I hate those twats who think they're fans but have never been to a game, or only been once. Fucking idiots. They really have no clue.

I caught the bug straight away as well.  Was taken to City before that and strangely didn't.  In fact I think it was City away in 94 that made me want to travel every game for a time.

This thread has also reminded me of one of my only regrets in life..........never standing at the CG when I had the chance.

First ever game.

I was 16, so 89/90, and it was against Leighton Orient. I was right at the front behind the right hand goal post and they had the 8ft fencing up - it was just after Hillsborough. Couldn't believe how close to the pitch we were.

Think we lost 2-1? - Over to Reg for confirmation on that!

We also went to Reading about the same time, about 3 games at Elm Park that same season. But it didnt give me anything like the buzz I got at Swindon. I remmember shaking with excitement at Swindon.

I used to like to write down all the songs in my program. Swearing and all. Pure gold memories.

Well the last time we lost 2-1 to LO was in 63/64 season.....they're one of those clubs who we havn't played too many times in recent years.

In fact we've only played them one season 85/86 in the last 30 years...there was an LC fixture in 99/00....but that season is best confined to the dust bin of the mind.

Also an FA Cup game which we won through after a draw at Brisbane Road in about 91.

That was the tie where the first replay at the CG was abandoned beause of a frozen pitch when Adrian Whitbread went over a Chalkie "back" and spent the night in PMH.

Sure it was them and was it at teh CG?

My first game so I was more interested in working out who the Town players were, rather than who we were playing.
