Title: York
Post by: 4D on Friday, January 27, 2023, 14:17:42
Looking to possibly go for a one night trip by train.
Any recommendations on a cheap hotel and places to eat and drink? Any other tips?

Nowhere cheap in York mate,  plenty of drinking houses and quite lively in the evenings, some interesting tours, ghost tour was interesting.

Hope you’re not paying for the train fare,  wilts did it for work and they paid, think it was something silly like four hundred quid.

Train fare is roughly £120, I could stay in a hostel for £38  :)

Do you want to be in the centre, or do you want to be with taxi/longish walk of the centre?

edit: silly question if you are going by train

There is a travel lodge walking distance from the Centre.

Great place!

Might want to let it dry out a bit?

Micklegate or Layerthorpe (Layerthorp is a bit of a walk from station if you are loaded up but doable)

Craft and Cut didn't used to be expensive for a steak if that's your thing.

House of Trembling Madness is a small bar that does craft beer (the one above the shop on stonegate) - depending who you are with and how rowdy you want to be (this isn't). There's loads of pubs about though.

Mrs Batch is from York, if there's anything specific you are looking for we'll have a think.

Not sure how cheap you want, but we stayed here when we went. It was a really interesting hotel and easy to get to and from the City. About a 15 minute walk from the train station.

If you're not fussed then the YHA outside of Town is about a 15-20 min walk via a couple of parks (and a nice churchyard during the day). I managed to book in there for £15 a night in November 2022 when I needed to arrange some last minute accoms. Bunk was comfy, showers hot, plenty of storage for bags etc and really friendly staff. There's a bar there also, so handy for a few scoops before ambling into Town.

Obviously check out the Minster even if just from the outside, and if you enjoy small squares then St. Stephens Square is one of my faves, plenty of decent small restaurants/cafes there too. A walk along the River Ouse can't really be avoided and is pleasant enough even on the quieter parts.

For more drinks and I'd say good to decent "pub food fare", the Ye Olde Starre Inne on Stonegate is more than fine with a selection of different guest ales and lagers (think they had a nice Pils on when I was there). The pub is the oldest in York so attracts several patrons but it's not overly pricey. There are some charming booths and snugs tucked away from the main bar which allow you to chill out and scan the history dotted along the walls and ceilings that encapsulate you as you swig a well deserved pint :)

York is just nice to have a bit of a wander round with no super fixed plans and is enjoyable in most weather - there's always a tea room/pub to dart into if needed! Enjoy :)

If you're lucky enough to pick a time to get in there then get a pint at the Trembling Madness also on Stonegate. It's only little but always has some interesting beers.
