Title: Nigel Eady
Post by: ChalkyWhiteIsGod on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, 19:44:23
Was talking about this in the other thread, but probably deserves its own.

What a legacy this man is leaving behind and thank god that scumbag Power didn't get his hands on the fund.

Did anyone on here know the man personally or his family or people close to him? Can anyone shed anymore light on him? How long ago did he pass and how long the money has been there, etc?

Think it goes without saying we'll need to name something after him like a stand or corner of the ground or something, but maybe there are other ways to honour him.

he died 10 years ago

his money helped finance foundation park. His long red and white scarf resides there.

I know no more.

My father knew Nigel.
Nigel was a keen Swindon supporter and was a farmer from Hanney near Wantage
There were many Town supporters in those days from Didcot Wantage and Abingdon.and all villages in between.
Remember Maurice Owen came from Abingdon
That said my Dad was born in Haydon Wick in 1912.

If ever there was someone who deserved, at the very least a stand named after him, it's this fella. What a contribution to our club.

Sent from my XQ-AD51

Definately needs something naming after him, i agree with a stand as well.

I can remember Nick Watkins wrote a lovely piece in the programme about him after he passed away.

In fairness, it should be the Nigel Eady County Ground but also appreciate you’d forego any additional name rights sponsorship (which may or may not be quite lucrative for the club)

Yeah exactly, you can see why they'd not want to do that but at the same time, it really needs to be something significant.

Was generally a quiet gentleman, one of those that never wanted the centre stage or limelight.
As NZ pointed out of farmer stock and simply loved the Town.
Would always attend the Out of Town Supporters club events at Denchworth, near Wantage and simply would take the evening in and simply enjoy himself.
He was famous for his long red and white scarf, almost a Dr Who similarity.

He was suffering the last time I saw him, then heard of his passing.

Good of you to head up a post about him Chalks. Fortunately Power never got his hands on the legacy.
Unbelievable that he left it basically “in trust” for all of us through Swindon Town is incredible.

What a truly wonderful Man.

How about the NE Stratton Bank or simply the NE stand and… a statue or bust alongside the legends that have been proposed?

Rumour has it Power asked the Eady trust fund to pay the wages during covid even though it was already coveref

He easily deserves more than the Stratton Bank but obviously the three home stands are already named after fairly legendary Swindon players.

Which is why I suggested the statue or bust in addition.

Remember him well, often just standing in the main car park,  thought many a time why doesn’t he wash that scarf ?  Maybe it was just the colour of it.  You would never have thought he was a millionaire,  a true supporter and very generous man.  RIP Nigel,  sure he will get his deserved recognition at the County Ground - Eventually.

Nigel was a very quiet reserved, unassuming gentlemen. His ‘Doctor Who’ scarf matched his red trousers.

He never missed a game.

Instead maybe name something that will never be changed, like the supports lounge or something similar so that it will never be changed no matter what sponsorship we get rather than a stand which could feasibly attract extra finance from sponsorship deals etc.

The man definately needs something as a legacy to his name for what he has left the club.

A facility within the new Town End maybe, with a plaque.

TBF it only popped up when I did a google search on the guys name. The only person who seemed to be able to get the search function to work on here was Reg when he wanted to trawl back to prove he was right and you were wrong.  :D

Considering all that has been said about the guy he seems to have been a pretty humble no fuss sort of bloke so whilst he undoubtedly needs to be commemorated in some manner I would suggest that it should probably be left to those who knew him (likely the Trustees) to decide the best way to honour him in a way he would have appreciated.

Are the trustees family members or are they solicitor type people ?

There needs to be a lasting tribute to him, for what he has left from foundation park to the purchasing of the CG - if ever there was a fitting term for him it is legend

I wonder if the club or trust have any future plans on how to honour his legacy ?

He had a long scarf primarily red in colour. He wore red trousers and usually a light brown jacket.

Possibly "The Nigel Eady Suite" as part of the corporate/executive boxes...when they are built...obviously with some sort of scarf wearing bust/statue in situ, looking out to the ground of course :)

Fully understand and appreciate what you’re saying but still doesn’t feel big enough to me.

Ok, it’s not exactly what’s happening but in essence he’s paying for the purchase of the CG. I would absolutely say he deserves to have the whole stadium named after him.

This got me thinking and firstly any legacy clearly needs to be given the green light by the Eady Trust,  they may think naming of a stand etc might be an overblown gesture that they wouldn't be comfortable with.

As said, the guy was quiet and reserved and never missed a game. I wonder in that case, did he always sit at the same seat during matches? I'm probably not going to word this correctly and don't want to use the word 'shrine' but perhaps his seat (if he had one) along with a small area around it could be 'retired' in order to create a reserved area where he could be remembered. Perhaps his 'Dr Who' scarf could be wrapped around the seat, or some objects personal to him laid on the seat. You could remove the seats either side of it and would be 'his place' in the ground.

Probably a stupid idea but may as well put it out there.

I like that idea. If he had a consistent seat, could easily just have it a different colour with his name on or something.

Yeah something along those lines. My thinking about the seats taken away next to it, so there would be room to put up a plaque, or a picture of him next to his seat or something similar.

If the guy had a regular seat just do a statue of him sat in that seat in that location*, fairly understated but he can watch the team for eternity (not sure if that's a good thing or not).

* Sure seen similar to this somewhere in a pub where a guy had always sat.

West Ham have VIP personalised seats as way of getting money out of their richer fans.

Could just get one like that and have it a different colour like white amongst the red so it stands out with a message to go with it.

I never realised this was him, he had the season ticket next to my dads in the old North Stand (obviously the Arkells now) back in the 70s and 80s, lovely chap.

Interestingly, today marks the 12th anniversary of my dads ashes being intered 4 foot down under the Town End goal frame.

Much more lifelike than the statue we had of Kerry Mucklow at the County Ground a couple of seasons ago !!, but seriously think this is a brilliant idea, no more than he deserves.  As already said there’s probably a few people who knew him by sight but not by name.  It would give him the recognition he deserves.

That was madness that game.

One steward separating the fans on our side. Coins being lobbed from Rovers end, pissed off bloke behind me tells the one steward if one more coin comes over then this already hanging off seat is getting launched.

Few minutes later and you hear a coin drop and he sticks to his word. Chaos from there.
