Hate to say, but watching Pox  play Arsenal  and they look competitive with a touch of aggression that's been missing all season at Swindon

Yeah they don’t look too bad. Shame we let Bodin go as he went on to have a decent career.

Always good to see the yellow filth lose though.

You can see where Garner and to a lesser extent Lindsay get their ideas of possession type football from with Arsenal game tonight.
However what both Garner and Lindsay obviously don't understand you need highly skilled players to play it.
Simply put we are currently miles apart from competing tippy tippy stuff and not at the races with aggressive division 4 play
Get the ex Crewe guy in quickly and let's hope he can do a good job.

the penalty claim for arsenal- where the oxford bloke dives in to block a shot and hits arm which is on the floor. commentators saying he has to put his arm somewhere. well yes but he put himself that position.

what is a natural position on a football pitch because with both feet off the floor and flying in to save a shot it doesn't seem natural.

Post by: singingiiiffy on Monday, January 9, 2023, 22:27:01

you could argue that they were over capacity yet again. as always with their cup matches there were blokes standing on the back of vehicles looking over the wooden fence. does that count towards attendance?

I'm hearing they didn't sell out.....how? Surely there is enough arsenal fans in Oxford to sell that three sided wank pit out?

Title: Re: Hate to say.... but
Post by: mystical_goat on Monday, January 9, 2023, 23:00:31
It did sell out - you had to have stubs from the previous round and a few went on general sale but were gone quick. The divide between the two sets of fans takes out about 500 seats and I don't know if Arsenal sold out.

Post by: 4D on Monday, January 9, 2023, 23:50:44
To be fair when we played Citeh, the capacity was reduced by around 300 because of cameras etc. I can't believe they need such a massive gap at Pox to divide the fans.

Didn't Pox get arsenal in the third round draw after we lost at our first game at the 3 sided kasssimo

We were a league above them at the time, can't have been long after the last game at manor turbo double.

All it shows is that we need to get out of  L2 at all costs. It's a spiral of stagnation.

Yep. An awful game settled by a Jefferson Louis goal that I'm not even sure he touched from a throw-in. Willy Carson on the tele beforehand saying that he wanted a draw.

I must confess that I didn't realise, until someone mentioned it on Facebook a minute ago, that the lease of the Three Sided Dream Palace ends in less than 4 years, hence the push to move to Kidlington.

Yep, glad to get out of Kassam's shithole.

I've not been following this, so apols for the basic questions.  Is the implication here that Kassam would be minded not to renew with OUFC in 4 yrs from now - hence the rush to find another home?  Or is it that OUFC will be no longer obliged to rent the stadium from then?  (In other words, is the club looking to leave a stadium it's never really liked; or is it being pushed out?)

I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking of the Kassam as a 'new ground' still.  (What is it...20-25 yrs old?)  So the idea that Oxford could be moving to an even newer ground is interesting.  Unsurprising given the nature of the city, but how do the fans feel about having to move further and further from the centre?

Oxford have new minted owners.
Kassam charging extortionate rent for a triangle. They want to move out and build a new ground, however land and property in Oxfordshire is premium price notwithstanding getting planning permission when you already have a football ground is proving tough.

Always going to be objections even without great crested newts.

22 years old. Definitely still a 'new ground' in almost all eyes. Kassam would love to rent it to us again and get his nearly £million annual payments (it may be over that now, I've not studied the accounts for a while - initially it was £500k pa, then £600k, then maybe £800k, but that was about 10 years ago). If we went he'd probably get a rugby team in on the cheap. He's already made way more than his money back from the ground and bowling alley/cinema/Hilton/Holiday Inn. Being a landlord is his business, after all - made his early millions by buying up the grottiest B&Bs in London to put ayslum seekers in, whilst collecting ridiculous rents on their behalf from the government.

I can't remember exactly how many but about 5 owners of the club since Kassam have tried and failed to get anywhere remotely meaningful in negotiating the sale of the stadium with him. He was quite happy just collecting the rent and other revenues.

As the lease is nearing its end the club need to explore other options as a practicality and also a bargaining tool. We may need to move, but if it becomes clear that a new ground is a real possibility, Kassam may miraculously have a change of heart and be willing to negotiate a sale. The current club owners haven't made their position public for obvious reasons - they may have already decided not to 'negotiate' with (get fucked by) Kassam any more. We don't really want to stay there but it would make more financial sense to buy it than build a new one.

And, yes, 4 years is not long but just about do-able. Something needs to happen soon - without planning approval and a decreasing time-frame Kassam will have us over a barrell again.

“There is no option to stay at the Kassam Stadium, our lease has been terminated.

“That’s not our decision, that’s the stadium company’s decision and to be fair they’re working within the legal rights to do so.

This won't be a popular view, but I empathise massively with Oxford's position.  We have had very significant shit ownership/off field matters of our own to deal with over the years.  And while I want to beat OUFC soundly every time we meet them (which hasn't been much, lately), I'll wish them nothing but the best of luck in sorting out their own off field/ground issues.

They're a similar club to us with a similar fanbase...just 35 miles up the road.  We've so much more in common with the yellow lot than many would care to admit.

Thanks for providing the update, Goat.  Genuinely interesting.

At some point the majority of their active support will be those that have only ever supported MK, for as long they can remember. As the time passes, their origin story will fade from being common knowledge etc.

Hard to wish harm on anyone’s lifelong club.

Kingstonian ground stealers!!

That was a domino effect which actually was impacted by Chelsea FC and some might say initially the Khosla's (who effectively cashed in about 20years ago) when originally selling the lease to AFC Wimbledon. Wimbledon had no real choice but to sell the ground shared ground (with Kingstonians) as Wimbledon themselves were after all trying to get back to Plough Lane. Plus Wimbledon at least gave about £1m to Kingstonians from the sale...a reminder that the Khosla's didn't hand a penny over to Kingstonians.

There was nothing in that agreement to really stop Chelsea FC from allowing Kingstonians to continue playing at Kingsmeadow though. Probably worth looking at the bigger picture of why Chelsea FC, were allowed to own a ground about 10miles away in the first place; just so their Academy and Ladies sides had somewhere "nicer" to play...
