Title: Mansfield Town v Swindon Town pre match chat & match day thread
Post by: Jimmy HaveHave on Thursday, October 27, 2022, 22:08:27
Another tough trip on the road to promotion rivals Mansfield Town who we've played 49 times since 1931 winning 23, drawing 15 and losing 11

Many older fans will remember the signing of Colin Calderwood from the Stags in 1985 was the start of the resurgence of STFC under Lou Macari making 330 appearances in his eight seasons before signing for Spurs in 1993

Mansfield 0 Swindon 2  Jephcott & Wakeling Att: 6,789 (690 Robins)

Feeling positive for 3 points here - if we retain playing Jephcott and Wakeling as a 2 up top. The difference in Wakeling’s performance was stark when moved back to a central striker position.

The question is: is reverting back to the disliked 3-5-2 worth it overall.

Anyway, piece of piss. 1-4

Away from home 352 has generally worked very well. Its the home games for me which totally work against it as the opposition sit in and the 3rd cb is wasted

Sold out our initial allocation of 700. Pay on the day available. Probably be close to 1000 going.

Great turn out!

Can be a little feisty at Mansfield.
They have an element like most clubs have.

Could be an interesting team selection today. Will Baudry come back in which would be harsh on Brennan?Darcy for Aguiar maybe and does he go for a twin pronged attack with Jephers and Wakeling? Fascinating

I'd quite like to see a 4-4-2 diamond with Williams as the 10, we get so much width from our FBs while Darcy and Gladwin often drift out too so wouldn't leave us looking too narrow I wouldn't have thought.

Post by: Frigby Daser on Saturday, October 29, 2022, 10:41:32
I’d like to see that too. With Iandolo likely to start, we get the width both sides. I’d be tempted to go with a diamond of Reed at the base, Gladwin and Khan, with Williams roaming. Darcy is a good option from the bench at the moment. I suspect he’ll stick with Brennan. If he can get a run of form, it’s like a (brand) new signing.

Pre match searching in vain for the Museum of Mineworkers Solidarity in The Widow Frost.

Arriving in pub gone midday for a Saturday away day.
Piss poor but unavoidable on this occasion.

So, Mansfield, one of the more insular venues on the L2 circuit and there is some competition in that category.

They were in form last time here & we didn't do ourselves justice on the night.
Still unbeaten at home but a bit of understated confidence isn't misplaced ahead of the game.

Should be a good atmosphere.
Their lot make a bit of noise with the aid of a drum of course.

Ideal conditions so the ball will zip across the surface.
Looking for a fast start same as Tuesday & see where it takes us.
Didn't look like an obvious front 2 after the changes at Bradford. Shade looked to have a free role & was up there more often than not, but those watching from afar get a much better view of the bigger picture.

There is normally a semi feral creature that "greets" visitors on the way to away end, accompanied by the imminent teen pregnancy companion of course.
It's almost like crossing a picket line of sorts, which is not unheard of in these parts.

Anyway, back to the game.
Have we now missed our last 5 competitive penalties?
Hopefully that won't become an issue as the season unfolds.

I know Williams prefers to play centrally as an attacking midfielder, that could indeed work.

Under the circumstances though, and I rarely say this, I think I would prefer 352

                           Brynn
         Brennan      Baudry     Clayton
Hutton                   Khan                  Iandolo
        Darcy                           Williams
            Jephcott         Wakeling

Title: Re: Mansfield Town v Swindon Town pre match chat & match day thread
Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, October 29, 2022, 11:23:09
I am still not entirely convinced Wakeling can play through the middle on his own, he had 3 good chances on Tuesday and didn't do great with them TBH. For me he needs a free role, going wherever he wants much like Shade, so for me he could be a better impact sub and then play the 361 with...

                           Brynn
         Brennan      Baudry     Clayton
Hutton                   Khan                    Iandolo
        Darcy           Williams        Gladwin
                         Jephcott

I'm becoming more convinced that he will stick with his preferred formation

TBH I think he will choose the starting line up from Tuesday again but with Iandolo at LB for the injured FBT, Darcy in for the poor performing Aguiar and Jephcott in the middle pushing Wakeling wide again.

                                Brynn
Hutton         Brennan          Clayton      Iandolo
        Darcy           Khan        Gladwin
Wakeling               Jephcott        Williams

Something like this is definitely worth re-visiting at some point.
Think we’d need/want Gladwin in there though.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we tried this if/when Williams has gone to sit on the Welsh bench at the World Cup…

Yeah Gladwin should probably be in there but without him it gives a little more defensive stability IMO.

You could well be right about the Wales call up situation though.

Looking at their lineup, assuming sky app is right, they’ve got 3 at the back & five in midfield.

If so Hutton could have a big role today if we can get the ball in behind.
A bit concerned we may got overrun in midfield, however we could have 3v3 if we can get through/round/over their midfield

They have been playing 3511/352 but recently tried 442 with a diamond midfield and that didnt work as well.

100%, hes a great asset going forwards but often a bit poor in defensive situations.

FBT is our best threat from attacking corners.

On the Iandolo defending thing - a big part of it is tactical instructions as well as player ability. Iandolo (and Hutton) both play very far up the pitch, it's not a huge surprise they might not always be in position defensively. So far in this game Darcy has been covering Iandolo fairly often as he bombs forward.

Hes beat his man a few times though, so it gives us some hope, it only takes one good cross on Jephcotts head.

Post by: Nemo on Saturday, October 29, 2022, 14:31:14
Really enjoyable half, we're giving it a good go and have clearly mixed things up tactically.

On our side, apart from the diamond, we've also gone a fair bit higher tempo and more direct than usual, we're crossing earlier and getting the ball forward from the back faster. We're looking a bit shaky at the back, but we're playing super high full backs, plus our defence is composed of our third and fourth choice CBs, a backup LB who is really a midfielder and a RB who is about as attacking as I've ever seen. Considering all that, it's not too bad at all.

For our goals, it's notable that we're following up shots and twice now we've scored off loose balls in the box - really positive stuff. Gladwin's ball for Hutton for the second - if he meant that, it's absolutely brilliant.

Mansfield are an interesting side - there's some big boys, they're physical and they appeal for absolutely everything which must make them a nightmare to ref. There's more to them that that though, some genuinely good footballers mixed in there as well and also pretty high tempo, with the odd exception of restarts in their own half which they take an absolute age over. Must be about getting a breather I guess.

I'm sure Mansfield fans are all furious at the ref but there really haven't been any properly stinking decisions. Reckon we're getting more of the 50:50 calls, but that's probably because they're screaming their heads off at the ref at every opportunity. Can't imagine that leads to positive refereeing outcomes terribly often.

Wild game, have no idea who will come out on top but if it's half as much fun as the first half then great. High tempo game with lots of flashpoints contributing to an excellent atmosphere too.

From a Mansfield fan

‘One of the best halves of football i’ve seen in ages.

If we win with this ref then fair play to us, i’ve seen some poor refs but he’s so unbelievably biased towards swindon it’s almost a circus act.

Misses pulls, pushes, kicks from behind when we’ve the ball, yet all of a sudden some soft southern jessy falls over and it’s instance a foul.

I trust he’ll be as biased towards us in the 2nd half’

Well, what a half.

Their first was poor on our part gave the ball away high up Darcy didn’t track his runner and Ellis left his man in loads of space at the far post.

Think it took them a while to work out we were playing a different formation to what they had been expecting. Our first equaliser had an air of inevitability to it happily.

Our second equaliser was beautiful. I am choosing to believe Gladwin went for the return, that must have been pass 11 or 12 though lovely move.

COYR win it!

It’s very tight at the top of the league. Hopefully Town will be that one team every year who are a bit inconsistent at the very start before completely finding their groove. Judging by the comments on here and the Stags forum this squad certainly seem capable. Main worry after today is Clayton, hopefully it’s no biggie

Only worry is we still handed out decent chances to them with 10 men. We look feeble at the back, but outweighed today anyway by being scintillating going forward.

If that works against one of the league’s better teams we should stick with it.

Really liked the link up play between the front 2. Shows we have some genuine options tactics wise.

Tough week on paper, great outcome though. Pre sending off I thought we looked really dangerous with the ball today.

Hope Clayton is okay, our best CB by some way for me.

Darcy and the midfield ran the show today. Mansfield will blame the ref.
They should take a harder look at their players inability to keep a lid on it.

We're missing three of our first choice defence and playing super high full backs, if we didn't look a bit dodgy at the back it'd be a miracle.

A few Mansfield fans comments on their forum.

Quote
Great game to watch this, both teams playing some decent stuff but Swindon been the better side. We’re trying to go man for man but Swindon have the more mobile side and it’s causing us problems, particularly in wide areas. Added edge of the crowd being firmly on the referees back.

We are miles off Swindon and it’s nothing to do with 10 men .

It's a great game. Swindon perhaps created the better of the chances. A few errors but Swindon are a good side.

Swindon are a good team and have played us off the park. We are lightweight and have a leaky defence and that is the difference between the two teams. They will get promoted, we won’t.

Ref's got a tenner on a Robins win.

We’ve made Swindon look like world beaters!!!

Well, it's been a while since I went home embarrassed

That game needs investigating for match fixing

Battered today. Swindon looked a good side.

Hutton for Swindon a very good player.

Way too much made in commentary about going down to 10 men . We weren’t getting anything from that with 11 . Just like Wembley , quick agile team runs through our pedestrian defence .

Boateng was stupid and deserved his red and Swindon were miles better than us, man for man and tactically. 5-2 was a very fair reflection of the game.

No issues with losing today against a Swindon side that from the 2nd minute to last were better than us....

It comes to something when you lose 5-2 and your keeper and centre half would be a decent shout for man of the match.

Everyone moaning about the officials as usual. Happens regular as clockwork everytime we're poor. Today we were well beaten by a much better side on the day. Our defending was poor there attacking was clever, we were soundly beaten. The ref bashing is sooo dull. To hear a few round me today you'd think it was supposed to be a non contact sport. Sure, they played up, rolled around etc, they aren't the first and won't be the last.

Post by: WEBBERhyde on Saturday, October 29, 2022, 16:26:12
That’s far more like the performance I’ve been expecting this squad to be capable of. That was a very enjoyable game from the start.

Yes we looked a bit leaky at times but if that means creating far more chances than we have been, I’ll be taking that every time, especially against one of the leagues better sides. After Bradford, I was hoping we’d be trying a midfield diamond with 2 up top. sure enough, getting Jephcott and Williams on the ball far more than they have been so far this season was a huge improvement.

Good thing is we have plenty of players that should be able to play in those positions when we need to change it up or provide cover.
I’ve not often felt particularly satisfied after our wins this season so far. Different story tonight though.

Just watching our goals and chances back on Twitter again makes me excited to see Jephcott and Wakeling as a forward pairing again. They played off each other superbly today. We have such an asset on our hands in Wakeling. Even when he’s not getting in on the goals he’s making things happen for other players.

Although if anyone else asks around January, he’s shite.

Shame Hutton didn’t get his goal and Gladwin the assist. What a beauty that would have been, and fully deserved for both.

The 4-4-2 diamond today felt like it did when we found 4-3-3 last season, and it clicked. Now time for a cup run, and back to back Saturdays at home. COYR

Also, I haven’t picked apart their goals yet, but in general play, Brennan fitted in well I thought. Another real plus. At Gillingham away, we lined up with Lavinier, McDonald, Clayton and FBT at the back. Today, once Clayton had gone, an entirely new back 4. The squad depth is genuine. That’s without playing Harries or Devine. Get McDonald back, RHM (who would be a huge plus)…. what a good week.

Jonny Williams - L2’s leading midfield scorer.

Let’s hope Wales exit the WC quickly.

Is Hoskins a forward? In any case, I agree, can’t fluke getting in the right position time after time. He will be missed.

How much compensation do we get for his absence? I feel like someone mentioned it previously.

£9k per day which starts when he leaves for pre WC training and, obviously, the time Wales are competing. Guessing about 30 days in all. Nice.

I understand that for the absence of Williams we will get £10k per day whilst he’s away.

If nothing else, it would help with the clubs bank balance.

I watched the match with Mansfield commentators. I actually thought they were quite good. Very complimentary of us and fair in their judgement of the big decisions.

We were brilliant today all over the pitch. It’s great to see us having more of a squad now. People forget our captain is out injured, Reed can’t get in the side, first choice left back is out. The squad will evolve throughout the season I’m sure but it’s great to have options and strengthen as the matches go on.

The midfield ran the show today. Williams, Darcy and Gladwin all great. We looked a bit more direct and always dangerous. Hutton is one hell of a find, was beating his man constantly and putting decent balls in.

Hopefully we can put a bit of a run together and stick in the top three.

Best of the season without doubt and a performance and result with intent.
Fans were excellent, even going down in seconds, never stopped supporting.

Games like that make the travelling and cost worthwhile.
Mansfield rattled, took the game to them and they had no means to stop it.
Cracking celebrations.

Only negative was probably Wakeling not getting himself on the score sheet.
He’s obviously contributed with two assists today but strikers want to score goals and purely on that front he’s been ‘off form’

How long is Darcys contract? Definitely a player in there.

Why even make the comment of Wakeling being “off form” for not scoring?
just don’t get the need.
Massive grin after the game today, still very young, learning and that square ball to Jephcott put us in front, acknowledged by all of the players in the celebration.

Gladwin class and Williams elite. Reckon we could see a 10 + season of goals and assists from him if he stays fit. Wakeling unreal. Back to his best.

We make a few signings in January and this team can do it, for sure. Onwards and upwards. Need a big gate for tranny. 10k you’d like to think.

A massive statement of intent. Watching the goals, the gaps left open for the stags two could have hidden Robin Hoods Merry men. I managed to listen to most of the second half commentary and sounded like we bossed it. Difficult to be critical when you score five away and win but that defending was piss poor.

Be nice to replicate that at Stockpot and progress to the second round of the FA Cup. The financial gravy train awaits us hopefully.

He should definitely score more. Should have had a couple in this match. I think he's a fantastic player, but he needs to put away some of the chances he gets. Having said that, if he'd scored one of those we wouldn't have got to see Darcy's beauty.

Positive it will come, however Jephcott more wasteful yesterday and should have scored another two.
No complaints from from me the 3 up top yesterday were combining well and pulling their defenders out of position.

As for Darcy’s strike without doubt better live than on the screen.
It had dip and curl, just magnificent and fitting the goal that ultimately put the game to bed.
Celebrations in the away end were cracking.

Wakeling scenario pretty simple for me - if you play him out wide he's ok but didn't have any clear cut chances in that run of games. Play him up front, as yday, and he's excellent, will get in scoring positions and goals will flow again

Amazing how after a couple of v shaky couple of games at the start of the season, Hutton is now the lynchpin of our attacking play. Has been getting in consistently excellent positions (had their LB on toast yday). Whether we've won or lost since Donny almost lines up with whether he is on it with his final ball or not.

Williams playing behind the front 2 brought the best out of him, and also Darcy, as they weren't getting in each others way like last Saturday.

I wonder if Iandolo will suit us more than FBT (who is the better defender) if we stick with 442 diamond, with his attacking threat.

Who would play at 10 when JW is at the World Cup? Roberts came on there yesterday and had a brilliant diving header hit the bar, but wouldn't be ready for a run of starts.. So maybe Darcy at 10, Khan push up and Reed back in at DM.. Reeds cameo yesterday probably his best of the season which is promising, fans got properly behind him which helps.

All that said, has been clear from game 1 that Lindsay wanted to set the team up with Gladwin as playmaker not Reed.. Will be interesting to see if Lindsay's thinks they can they start together if needed. Khan as the wrecking ball and driving out from the back is improving all the time (and ran the second half yday) although he can be a bit heart in mouth on the edge of our area at times

Checked back and that's only the 2nd time this century that we've scored 5 away from home in the league.
Last time being Jan 2003 also 5-2 v Stockport.
Shipped 5 a few times and hit for 6 as well so maybe an indicator of being in the doldrums for a lot of that time. Maybe.

Thinking back, will try and not get too carried away, that was one of those games that could have ended up 4-4 had it stayed 11 v 11.
Great to watch though and that's what it's all about, for me anyway.

Credit to Lindsey for the bold attacking approach and maybe the coaching staff are not just a load of random shouty blokes after all. :)
It's percentages at this level where the majority of teams are not going to profit from the space when the full backs are not home.
Opposing sides probably won't have encountered our formation very much either, but there will come a time when it gets sussed out.

Jephcott's numbers are starting to look better now, 5 in 11 appearances is good.
Wakelings contribution has been invaluable albeit without the goals in recent games, but only a matter of time before he starts scoring again.

Locking the gate to stop us getting to our cars until 5.25, not so much. Confusion as to who made the decision.

I was at the 2-5 at WBA in the 94-95 season as we were mid free fall from the Premier League to third tier (whatever it was called at the time).

Strangely, looking it up now I see the scoring sequence was exactly the same as yesterday as we came back from 1-0 and 2-1 down although all the goals were scored in the second half.

One of my favourite games...

Some more comments from Mansfield fans on their forum....
Quote
Best team won today and if that’s the standard to go up we are so far behind it’s unreal
Swindon look a better team without Mckirdy too.
That’s how you play attacking football

Slow burn down the table and against a good side like Swindon showed just how weak we are now

We were well beaten before the card and would probably have conceded again. Our defensive frailties have been well documented on here and Swindon clearly showed our weaknesses up.

Squad old, slow and I guarantee not one set of fans look at any of our players and go ‘he’s class!’. You could say that about half the Swindon team.

Swindon are a good team.

Thought the Swindon right back, No 2, was excellent all afternoon, beating Macca and others for fun and putting great crosses in. Johnny Williams was excellent but he pushed him very close

Swindon are the level that we can only dream of...quality players all over the pitch and break at speed in numbers , each player running off the ball into space and always available

A very entertaining game between two teams who are better at attacking than defending and Swindon did it a lot better than the Stags today. I will be surprised if they do not finish in the top three. Swindon's quick ball movement exposed the lack of mobility and pace in our defence.

We were beaten in so many ways today.
By the better team.
By our own mistakes.
By our ridiculous ill discipline.
By the officials.

Swindon are the best side Ive seen us come up against in a while. They play nice football and retained possession very well. They are the first team I’ve seen really expose our lack of pace in defence. Even at 2-1 up I didn’t don’t fancy us today. Macca had a nightmare against their excellent number 2, Hutton. I thought he must have been on loan from a higher division so was surprised to see they’d picked him up from Barrow. They generally attacked with pace and Macca wasn’t on his own as the whole defence were run ragged.

The officials were dreadful, inconsistent and allowed Swindon to get away with so much gamesmanship it got the better of our players.

We definitely lack pace, we looked static compared to the running Swindon did off the ball.

I was astonished at some of the decisions the officials made but that’s not an excuse. Swindon were very good, Williams looked a class above and they deserved their win. We made mistakes they didn’t, we didn’t finish our chances, they did.

Swindon aren’t as good as people make out…we just made them look very good. If they were that good they’d be top

They were good, very good in fact and deserved the win regardless of any decisions. We were in the game at 2-3 down (I still feel we’d have lost in the end) and Boateng should have retreated, they were conning the ref all afternoon and looking for a sending off and he gave him an excuse.

We are just about mid table now and we were outplayed today. The ref was dreadful but absolutely not the reason for our defeat. We lost because we are having to play players who are not fully fit due to the lack of cover, we lost because today we did not have a single player whose natural position is centre back, we lost today because of player indiscipline, we lost today because Swindon were miles better than us and there are several more reasons why we lost.

Swindon we’re good and ultra clinical today.

Swindon had good chances for at least three more goals. Pym was called upon as last man on more than one occasion.

That biggest home defeat in the league since we came back up & the biggest since October 2010 when Wimbledon beat us 2-5.
It's only the 3rd time in 10 years we've conceded 5 in a league game.

Some facts that many Town fans may not have been fully aware of about yesterdays game to put it into context.

The first time Mansfield had lost at home in the league this season.

Only Mansfield’s second defeat at home in the league in 13 months.

The first time Mansfield had conceded 5 goals in a league game for 6 years, since a 5-2 defeat at Carlisle in November 2016.

The first time Mansfield had conceded 5 goals at home in a league game for nearly 12 years, since a 5-2 defeat at home to Fleetwood in the Conference in January 2011. (Mansfield also lost 5-2 at home to AFC Wimbledon earlier the same season).

Quote
Mansfield Town  2 - 5  Swindon Town
Gordon 1, Swan 30. Boateng sent off 59.  Williams 7, 35, Jephcott 51, Darcy 68, Gladwin pen 85
Attendance: 6,804 (734 from Swindon) (note this it is essentially tickets sold, including season tickets)

Date: 29 October 2022

STAGS BEATEN 5-2 AT HOME BY SWINDON

Martin Shaw at the One Call Stadium, Field Mill

Mansfield Town were beaten 5-2 by Swindon Town at the One Call Stadium this afternoon. It was an extraordinary game. The first half was absolutely superb entertainment with high quality attacking from both sides, as the Stags took the lead after 35 seconds through Kellan Gordon, were pegged back after 7 minutes, took the lead again after 30 minutes through Will Swan, and were pegged back again in controversial circumstances after 35 minutes. It was 2-2 at the break and it was hard to remember a better half of entertaining football.
The Stags should have been ahead after 50 minutes but missed a great chance, and within a minute at the other end Swindon took the lead for the first time at 3-2.
The Stags then had a player sent off after 59 minutes, for the second game running at exactly the same minute. This time it was Hiram Boateng, picking up a second booking for trying to stop a free kick from being taken quickly. Daft from Boateng, when he was already on a yellow card, and that would be understating the stupidity and costliness of it. After that, Swindon ruthlessly took advantage of the extra man to cruise to victory scoring two more goals as well as hitting the bar.

An extraordinary result:
The first time Mansfield had lost at home in the league this season.
Only Mansfield’s second defeat at home in the league in 13 months.
The first time Mansfield had conceded 5 goals in a league game for 6 years, since a 5-2 defeat at Carlisle in November 2016.
The first time Mansfield had conceded 5 goals at home in a league game for nearly 12 years, since a 5-2 defeat at home to Fleetwood in the Conference in January 2011. (Mansfield also lost 5-2 at home to AFC Wimbledon earlier the same season).

Full credit to Swindon who played very well going forward. As did Mansfield for an hour. But defences looked suspect. In Jonny Williams, a Welsh international, Swindon have a midfielder who in my opinion is too good for League Two. I said that in commentary before the game started. He went on to score Swindon’s first two goals. I also said in commentary before the game that I was surprised that Ollie Clarke wasn’t starting for Mansfield to nullify the threat of Williams, as he did very effectively last season. Clarke was brought on after 66 minutes, he almost immediately got Williams booked, and Williams was almost immediately substituted.

The Stags drop 5 places to 9th in the table, albeit only five points behind third placed Northampton with a game in hand.

Mansfield took the lead after 35 seconds. Good play on the left involving McLaughlin, Quinn and Swan, gave McLaughlin a yard of space to cross from the left across the edge of the six yard box and find Gordon unmarked at the far post. Gordon slotted past the keeper from 6 yards. Gordon wasn’t just unmarked, there was no defender within 10 yards of him. It was just his second goal for Mansfield, and his first for more than 3 years since scoring at Port Vale in a 2-2 draw in October 2019.

Swindon were level after 7 minutes. Hawkins lost possession following a McLaughlin throw-in on the halfway line. Jacob Wakeling got past O’Toole, as O’Toole and Hawkins then collided taking each other out, Wakeling got into the area, and fired towards the bottom right corner of the net. Pym dived at full stretch to make a great save, but Jonny Williams slotted the loose ball into the net from 3 yards. Unfortunate for Pym who was at such full stretch that he could not push the ball anywhere else other than towards Williams. Poor from Hawkins, and O’Toole could have done better.

The Stags could have been back in front as Gordon had a shot blocked at source, and then after a lovely move, McLaughlin’s low ball in from the left was turned goalwards by Swan but Swindon keeper Sol Brynn saved on his line.

The Stags were back in front after 30 minutes. Boateng nicked the ball off Ronan Darcy in the centre circle, he played a lovely ball forward to Lapslie, and Lapslie sent Swan away with a fabulous ball. Swan ran on to it, took one touch into the area, and fired past the keeper into the bottom left corner of the net from 16 yards. A tremendous goal, Swan’s 5th goal of the season. Lapslie’s 6th assist of the season (see details at the bottom).

Boateng was booked for a late challenge after 32 minutes. That was to become significant in the second half.

Swindon were level again after 35 minutes. Remeao Hutton, who had a fine game going forward for Swindon from right back, played a 1-2 with Ben Gladwin to get into the Stags area, Hutton fired across Pym and against the inside of the left post. The ball span across the face of goal, around the right post and appeared to go out of play for a goal kick. Hutton meanwhile had got to the byline and pulled the ball back into play. From the video, Hutton’s left foot is planted on the byline as he uses his right boot to pull the ball back into play. We don’t have the perfect angle, but it certainly appears to be out of play. The ball is pulled back to Jonny Williams, who slots into the right corner of the net from 8 yards. A controversial goal. McLaughlin was convinced the ball was out of play.

More chances for both sides before the break as Darcy fired straight at Pym, and Swan flicked just wide from a great cross from Gordon.

2-2 at the break and it had been simply superb entertainment, and high quality attacking from both sides.

Into the second half. After 49 minutes, great play from Lapslie to tee up Swan who volleyed just over the bar. Then after 50 minutes, Lapslie sent Gordon into the area for a great chance but Gordon’s shot was saved by the keeper with his legs.

However within seconds, on 51 minutes, rather than the Stags being ahead, it was Swindon who took the lead, for the first time in the game. Luke Jephcott sent Wakeling away down the left, Wakeling got to the byline, cut back inside O’Toole, and teed up Jephcott who was completely unmarked 11 yards out to fire into the net. O’Toole could have done better, as could Hawkins, Hewitt and Hartigan who all left Jephcott unmarked.

The Stags were reduced to ten men after 59 minute. Boateng chased after Saidou Khan from inside his own half to 40 yards from goal. Boateng fouled Khan, a soft foul, but probably a foul nonetheless. Khan got up, put the ball on the floor and tried to take the free kick quickly, but Boateng stopped him doing so. The referee immediately booked Boateng for doing so. After the game Nigel Clough commented that the ball was moving as Boateng stopped it being taken quickly. That is true, but it doesn’t take away from the stupidity of Boateng’s action when he was already on a yellow card.
(This is what Clough said about the free kick: “The free kick was bouncing so it wasn't a legitimate free kick with the ball moving, so I am not sure he is entitled to send him off. I asked the assistant and fourth official what the rule was on that bit, neither of them answered it.”)
Worth noting of course that you can’t appeal against a second yellow card, whatever the rights and wrongs of the ball already moving when Boateng stopped the free kick being taken.

There was little chance of a Stags recovery after that. On 68 minutes, it was 4-2. Hutton got forward and the right and squared inside to Wakeling whose shot was brilliantly saved by Pym. Wakeling recycled the loose ball to Darcy who cut inside from the left along the edge of the area and curled a great shot into the top right corner of the net.

Pym pushed a long range shot from Williams wide, then Jephcott got into the area 1-on-1 with Pym and fired into the side netting as Swindon pushed home the man advantage.

And it was 5-2 after 85 minutes, with a rare error of judgement from Pym. Jephcott went for a ball on the byline, running away from goal, going nowhere, and Pym brought him down for a clear penalty. Ben Gladwin converted the penalty, down the middle, as Pym dived to his right.

Jephcott sent a flying header against the bar from a Hutton cross after 87 minutes.

The Stags had three chances for a consolation goal as sub Jason Law made a great run along the byline on the right and his shot was saved at the near post, Bowery brought a good save from the keeper with a left footed shot, Hawkins headed straight at the keeper from the resulting corner, and Clarke fired wide from the edge of the area having been teed up by Swan.

A terrible result for the Stags. Plenty of poor defending, maybe a bit of bad luck with the second Swindon goal, and a really daft and costly sending off all contributed to the result.

Boateng tweeted on Sunday morning: “Let my teammates and the fans down yesterday and I’m gutted about that as I know once you go down to 10 there’s little chance of getting something out of the game already a goal down.. I will be working hard to make sure I put things right when back on the pitch”.

The next game is in the FA Cup, away to Barrow next Saturday. Due to FA Cup rights, there is no streaming on iFollow for overseas or UK viewers, though we will of course bring full match commentary as usual.

Their commentators said Mansfield needed to take out Jonny Williams either legally or illegally. Looked like their team preferred the latter.

They’re making a huge thing of the ref’s biased (against them, of course) performance. I’ve just watched back and they got away with a load of niggly stuff plus Boateng should have been booked first for lunging in on Darcy from behind.

One other thing. We were told by Plymouth fans that Jephcott was just a poacher. He’s played some fantastic balls out widethat have led to goals. They’re all getting jumpy now wondering if they can recall him in January.

Hasn’t a fee been agreed if we decide to buy him then?

I'm guessing that you've read below but still none the wiser as it would appear there's a deal in place but not sure which one it is😀

Hopefully top of the league above Plymouth are not too fussed.

I don’t quite understand the deal that has been done. Neither our, or their version of the situation makes much sense.

If we have already in affect bought Jephcott, then why would they lie about it. Doubt they would get much blowback from fans. They are top.

If it is just a normal loan and they can recall as normal, why would we lie?

Nothing stopping PA just offering him better terms than us either.

I understand that for the absence of Williams we will get £10k per day whilst he’s away.

If nothing else, it would help with the clubs bank balance.

Did someone ever find out if it was true that we get something for Woolacott as he played for us during qualifying?

I watched the match with Mansfield commentators. I actually thought they were quite good. Very complimentary of us and fair in their judgement of the big decisions.

Apart from the advocating of injuring Williams and that they should have smashed him in the first minute.

Perm deal agreed at fixed price. We have option to make perm in jan which I believe club will do. I dont think he will be going anywhere in jan other than staying with us

…he’s played for both us and Plymouth this season - so unless the rules have changed, he can’t play for anyone else can he? (Unless Scottish / Foreign clubs aren’t part of this rule?)

So, he either stays here or Plymouth play him.

in fairness the Plymouth fans I talked to on Twitter said:
   - can't play as a lone striker, needs to play in 2
   - brings others into the game
   - isn't blessed with pace

I think that's pretty much spot on. I'm glad we've finally tried a formation that also suits his strengths.

as far as town have said, we have an absolute option to buy him - only jephcott himself can reject the deal.

this was in response to Plymouth saying he was recallable in January (I suppose technically he is, but assume that's if we/he doesn't activate the deal)

edit: oh yeah already said that. I didn't read back... I didn't read back

Well that was an old fashioned shoot out between two teams with plenty of attacking ability but very poor at the back. They made life a lot more difficult for themselves by handing up a silly sending off and penalty so the score may have flattered us a little, but even so I would say we were still the better team overall and deserved the win.

So many positives going forward. Williams is on fire so its unfortunate we'll be losing him for a while soon but at least we'll be making a wedge. I wouldn't be against trying Darcy in his position while he's away, serious player there.

I don't want to go too harsh on the defense because we obviously have injuries which makes things more difficult, but we're still appalling there. Its the one area of the pitch that hasn't come along in the same way everywhere else has since the start of the season. Its yet another game that on another day with some better finishing from the opposition we'd have shipped a boat load of goals ourselves. It needs addressing or there will be a ceiling to our success this season.

While I'd love a cup run, I would still rest any players that need it for Stockport. The league is too important and its going to a long hard season. Hopefully the players that come in are hungry for the chance.

Interesting is one way of putting it, I was in there too when a glass was broken in Sid Sellars face in the bar while playing pool, lively is a better way of putting it! biggest away win I have ever been to with Swindon in a competitive match.

Northampton fans turned up for the trouble.
The pool balls were also flying about which could have resulted in a serious injury.
Was only 1-0 at halftime if I recall.

I was at Grantham v Swindon December 1965 in the FA Cup. Won 6-1. I wasn't at the 5-1 win at Mansfield after relegation back to Division 3 a season or so later but I have a feeling/distant memory  that both our full backs, Owen Dawson and John (legend) Trollope, scored. Which was unusual back then to say the least.

Stoke fans joining in with the goal celebrations and doing the Conga was one of the highlights. I've had a soft spot for Stoke fans since then, especially as they backed us when we were demoted from the 1st Division for financial irregularities. They are always fair when defeated and magnanimous in victory.  You'd never have thought the other team in Stoke would have such arseholes for fans.

Great game. Fjortofts pissed off celebration. And Ty Goodens first town goal?

Some of those previous posts have certainly jogged the old memory,  was lucky enough to be at the away wins at WBA 5-2, & B’ham 6-4, brilliant days out,  not a day of mega goals but the Blackburn PO Away game will always stick in my mind as a great day out together with the Gillingham PO game at Selhurst Park.  Been lucky enough to have seen Town play on around 70 away grounds and spent a fortune doing it - especially during the premiership season!.
One of the worst was the FAC game at Newcastle, ropey old charabang and sitting on that bloody cold scaffolding watching the goals roll in.
Far too many home games but remember the Stoke fans vividly doing the conga on the bank.
Maybe it’s not been so bad watching Town over the years after all !!.

Looked like a great performance on Saturday based on the highlights. Attacking force seems to be gelling nicely and finally getting a decent number of goals. Let’s hope we can string together some consistency. Williams’ absence will present an opportunity for the likes of Roberts and Reed to stake a claim, although for the latter to be included you would think a change of system may be required.

Taken 22 points out of the last 30 available. Impressive.
and 6 of those dropped were v Northampton and Stevenage, who weren't exactly crap.

they've got 18 and 20 over the last 10 respectively.

only Orient have bettered us (23)

Cracking statement of intent against a side who many would imagine to be at least a PO contender come season's end.

It's at the point of the season where this Mansfield fixture was definitely a good indicator as to where the "quality" bar is set. Town smashed through that and should possibly be looking at hunting down Stevenage for on of the auto spots.

Long way to go of course but if Town perform half as good as that (as a collective) each game then I don't think there will be too many issues with positive results. This is the kind of position Town should always be in at a minimum in this division (around 5th/6th place upwards).

Town appear to be building stronger game on game and it feels a little bit like the PdC season, where players are taking time to gel but ultimately you know there is a decent squad depth; except without too much of the drama or distraction. Talking of distractions, it's funny isn't it...Harry who?
