Title: Piss Pot Trophy v Plymouth
Post by: The Artist Formerly Known as Audrey on Monday, September 19, 2022, 16:27:41
Jephcott not allowed to play.

RMH will get 30 minutes.

Macdonald having a scan.

Will watch just to see the squad players as per norm.

Win or lose it doesn't really matter just get game time for the fringe players and hope we suffer no injuries.

Iandolo could get game time on his return, Brann likely to make his debut in goal.

Obviously no place for Massey, Minturn, Cowmeadow or Parsons.

Aguiar, Devine (fitness allowing), Khan, Harries, Dabre, Roberts, Brennan and RSH all likely to play at least some part of proceedings.

Yep, I'll watch as normal, should be a fairly strong 'second' eleven.  Surely Roberts starts, could become important during the WC assuming Williams is on the plane.

I have a feeling we will see this sort of line up. not risking any real first teamers.

                   Brann
Fox    Brennan    Harries    Devine
    Khan       Aguiar     Iandolo
Dabre        Wynn-Davis        Roberts

Might stick it on on the firestick app in the background. Thought it was a mickey mouse competition before the inclusion of B/U23 teams but that really did just kill it off for me.

Went to the Palace game but giving this one a miss as my thinking is that £10 for a concessionary ST holder is too much and as the youngsters progression is what I like to see and they in the main are now all out on loan, it then becomes even more of a nothing match.

Haven’t been to one of these since the premier league kids teams were included and not going to change tonight.

Hope we play as many kids as we can get away with

I'm popping out there tonight with the little lad, he loves a 7pm kick off on a school night! And for me personally, looking forward to seeing Brann, Devine, Brennan, Iandolo, Hepburn-Murphy, Roberts et al. in action. Should give a good gauge as to how deep the squad is. Shame for Harries that he's suspended tonight after picking up two yellows vs Palace U23s.

My educated guess XI for tonight:

(4-3-3)
GK Brann

RB Hutton
LB Devine
CB Clayton/Baudry (45 mins each?)
CB Brennan

RCM Aguiar
CM Khan
LCM Iandolo

RW - Roberts
LW - Dabre
FOR - Kanu or Wyn-Davis (job share?)

I can't see Baudry or Clayton getting game time ahead of Harries TBH.

I also don't think he will risk Hutton as we only have 1 right back fit with Lavinier out injured.

Isn't Harries suspended due to red card in previous game? Also who else can play right back? Sounds as  though Lavinier may be fit for Grimsby game.

How many games did he get?

We have played 3 games since then, and McKirdys league sending off counted in this cup so I presumed sendings off in this cup count in the league as well?.

Brennan has played at RB before if we are going to play a different centre back pairing.

Usually suspensions for the league and the trophy don't cross over, I took it that McKirdy's ban was enforced by the league outside of a 90 minutes so wasn't competition dependant, just 3 '1st team fixtures' which this, technically is.

Cheers KT nobody seems to have said anything about the sending off TBH.

I was only going by the fact that he has not been in the matchday squad for the last 3 games since his sending off anyway.

Completely separate punishment last season, no impact on league/proper cups. As per what KT said.

I assume it's the same this season, and  he's simply not been selected for the league

Can't watch or listen, but will be interested to see what people think of Devine.

Should be good fun if Dabre is played a bit further forward.

Like I say, that was my assumption of the situation.

As for the 11, Roberts, Shade and Dabre as the front three, probably Shade through the middle I guess?  Iandolo as an 8 with Aguiar.

What’s the point of playing it short from goal kicks if the receiving player hasn’t got the confidence to do anything other that lump it - usually out of touch.

Wouldn’t mind a fiver for every pass back to Brynn. It’s mind numbingly awful.

Hutton’s put some decent crosses in which is a bit pointless with tiny Dabre the only player in the box. It’s all pointless, clueless, useless.

Post by: RobertT on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, 18:34:16
I missed Saturday, maybe that is the way to go in the future.

I'll still have a good debate with anyone who thinks we have a strong squad this season.  We seem to have invested in an exceptionally raw bunch of players.  Some of them may be rough diamonds, but right now it just means we can expect really up and down performances and a high degree of naivety.

Roberts reminds me of Adeloye - not in terms of where he plays or style, but in terms of simply being used to a totally different level of football.  He could have been in the stands and got more involvement.  I'm not judging him as a player, just remarking on the fact it looks to me like it will be a long time before he'll be ready to be a truly impactful first team player even if he does have the skillset/promise.

Aguilar and Shade are the two biggest near term concerns for me.  Both are supposed to be in our first team squad and the latter has played a part in every game.  Both drift out of a game so easily.

Hutton - another example of the word Raw.  If we can find a way of getting something out of his crossing ability we may have some output from him, but my god his defending is atrocious at times.  I would really worry if we had to rely on him as a right back, but maybe we can make a decent right winger out of him - needs a target though.

Dabre - I mean, I love watching him, but he really isn't going to make it as a footballer, is he?  I don't really see any change in him since his first appearance - it's like watching a fan giving it a go, but with fantastic underlying technical ability (control for example).  The sort of kid that was great on the playground but would only ever go on to have a career doing tricks for TV or a show or something.

Overall, it's turgid/bad.  Good job it really doesn't matter, in fact, the sooner we are out of the kickabout tournament the better.

He has ran around a lot and looks like he has something about him, fairly short but strong and quick.

RHM seems like he has now swapped to wide left with Roberts going more central now.

Improvement on the first half - would have been difficult not to improve on that. Clayton has played some great long balls out of defence. Murphy looks dangerous and Roberts much better now played in position.

Aguiar has got more involved and Hutton continues to look good going forward.

Hutton nice near post cross to RHM but it hits him high and goes wide.

Devine has looked pretty good all game for me, Hutton solid as is Khan, Hepburn-Murphy has something about him, Clayton mostly solid too. Roberts when played left looks decent as well.

I guess you didn’t noticed?

I was at the game so I didn’t notice tbf.

Phil Smith " Roberts has looked more comfortable this half, maybe its cos he has gone central"

No Phil, its because hes a natural left footer and now hes playing left wing, his best position!

Completely understand the point. There are plenty of players who are used this way though with success. Ritchie and Beauchamp are the first who come to mind.
But you’re watching so can see his limitations no doubt.

It has worked well previously mate, but on his debut asking him to play in a position hes unfamiliar with has the potential to be bad for him.

Hes looked much better wide left or drifting to the left rather than cutting inside, he seems to be a proper winger, who goes past his man and crosses and not cutting inside ala Ritchie.

Getting our defeats out the way in this comp. Very smart. Just a shame we have to fulfill our final fixture v Rovers.

Most the first team rested for Saturday plus the inclusion of RHM you would assume especially in Williams absence. Lets continue the good league form.

1st half was up there with the worst game I have ever seen, 2nd half much better though.

Hepburn-Murphy looks lively and eager and knows where the goal is, Devine did a lot of good work, Hutton and Khan very solid displays alongside Clayton.

There is potential in Roberts if played wide left, Shade got much better 2nd half, Aguiar was better 2nd half but still didnt grab the game by the scruff of the neck as he should be doing.

Brynn made a couple of good saves and 2 goals he could do nothing about.

Brennan was very quiet all game, Iandolo well off the pace and was at fault for 1 goal but had 1 good shot and cross but is way off fitness still.

Dabre, what can you say? hes a handful with his close control but I personally don't think theres a footballer in him, I have seen eevry game he has played for us and havent seen him do much at all, sorry Mo but I think this is way beyond you.

The subs...

Dworzak looked ok, made a few passes but gave the ball away a couple of times, has potential and can pass a ball, Fox is eager and full of running but wasnt on the pitch long enough to make a difference at left back.

We are out, we werent embarressed by them, we scored, it was a decent run out.

It seems weird to me that Dabre hasn't gone out on loan like Parsons and Cowmeadow. Does it mean SL rates him above those 2? I suppose logically it does

I agree, the first half was up there with the worst   It was so negative and dull, the keeper must have had more touches than the rest of the team put together !

The second half was a great improvement, and I think we were the better team, so much more positive and threatening.
For me the best player was Khan, he's very assured on the ball, he puts himself about, he can turn on a sixpence and he made some driving runs from deep midfield into the opposition half.

Hutton ran him close, put in some great crosses but is definitely better going forward than defending !

The new striker looked very promising, he looked confident and made sure he was involved in all the attacking moves. If fit, he could be what's needed to fill the hole left by Williams's departure.

Khan can play defensively but also attacking wise, he should be William's replacement.

My mate is a 'Nam fan and he says he was brilliant at National South level during his loan and would welcome him back any time, praised his chasing of everything, won them a penalty and scored a goal in his 11 game loan spell, he says they are trying to get him on loan again.

I think it would do him the world of good as hes got great close control but has no final touch, how he missed the totally open goal from 1 yard out is beyond me, seemed like he fell over his own feet and that stopped Roberts from getting to the ball and scoring.

As RobT suggested, I bet he looks amazing in 5 asides and in training has great control and ball skills but get him on a big pitch and it all fluffs up.

He does remind me of Carmelo Gallo back in the early 80s, was a guiness book of records contender for his keepy uppy skills, demonstrated them on the pitch pre game in the 82 as a 16 year old and signed as an apprentice and couldnt do it in matchday conditions and went on to play for Supermarine and Lambourn Sports and never set the world on fire.

Would be interesting if we can get to a point with everyone fit and Lindsey is brave enough to play Jephcott, Wakeling and Hepburn-Murphy as a front 3. We might not ever get to a point of having a good capable defence this season but you have to see goals in that front three.

Getting minutes into the legs of Ellis and RHM important, the result completely irrelevant.

We do certainly need to play Jephcott and Wakeling, even if its not as a 2 but Wakeling operating wide left.

RHM I think will be used for a couple of months as an impact sub, and what a sub he could be, for someone who is only 5 foot 8 he can jump, hes strong, can control a ball and has bags of pace and blatantly knows where the goal is. When fully fit that 3 you suggest could be a no brainer.

This video shows what he is capable of with a hat-trick for Tranny vs MK Dongs 2 years or so ago.

Thanks.  Enjoyed that.  Then watched the extended highlights from last night.  RHM looks a prospect with a spot of actual pedigree behind him.

An injury history too - which may be why we got him - but a bit special and not one to rush and risk breaking.

It looks like the game was generally a useful exercise and showed plenty of promise (alongside a need for further develoment or fitness - as the case may be) in our squad.

I watched the whole game video and we played with a lot of spirit second half, totally unlike during the boring first half.  Perhaps it was nerves, or trying too hard not to make a mistake, in the first half.

Where can you see extended highlights moley?

I watched the 2 minute wonder on youtube. There was one highlight where Dabre was dribbling with the ball and then just literally passed it to his right to a Plymouth player. As with others, I really don't get Dabre, a bundle of energy but little else sadly.

Go to the club website and then “iFollow” and sign in and go to “videos” or “latest videos”. I pay for audio comms as live outside of Wiltshire radio zone so I have access to this; I think if you don’t pay the £4.49/month (or something similar) you won’t be able to access it. Hutton looked like a real attacking threat; I think we should just convert him to a winger? He is one of those like Bale, Baines or Walcott who seem to do a lot better going forwards.
