Title: Swindon Football Pink cartoons
Post by: Bedford Red on Thursday, June 9, 2022, 19:36:35
At the start of the first lockdown i came across a few old Swindon football Pinks whilst having a sort out, all sold now on e-bay.

Anyhow i scanned a few bits of interest before selling them, and then as ever did nothing with them. So, here are a few cartoons i scanned from various editions which i've just put onto flickr (hopefully the link works)

I've also got some reserve match reports and a few odds and odds which i'll put on flickr and then onto here.

Those are great. Good to see that even in 1978 we had a crowd noteworthy for being miserable

Used to love the Football Pink.
Just in time to run out the station and grab one before catching the train.

i liked the Pink too.
I vaguely remember that there was a period before the end of its life where it was still called the Football Pink but was printed on white newspaper - either because of a shortage of pink newspaper or as a cost saving measure.

Sure there used to be a ‘green un’ as well.

Used to have a paper round delivering the "Pink" when I was a kid, used to spend as much time reading it as I did delivering them.... Great times

That far back? The Pink was still going strong in Newcastle when I lived there in the 90's and was finally binned in 2005.

Loved the Pink. Great coverage of the Wiltshire League also, which I used to play in. Selfishly, loved seeing my name in the same paper as my Town heroes. My old man used to pick it up in the Old Town newsagents on the way home

I used to buy the Pink every Saturday in the mid 70's and although they brought it back in the 90's it was never the same as sales were really poor and it wasn't around very long.

When did the Pink disappear in Swindon?

Last edition of the Pink was 18 November 1978, there was nothing in it about it being the last edition so i guess it came as a shock to the staff when it suddenly stopped.

I bet they weren't tickled pink about it.

And I thought being shit at penalties was a relatively (last 20 years) new thing. 5 in a row and from McHale, beater of the Pikies... Is there a team with a worse penalty record??

Talking about penalties got me thinking who has scored the most in a STFC shirt🤔 I'll take a punt on David Moss

Keep guessing, Jimmy. He's joint 8th in the list.

I'm intrigued now but without checking I can't remember if John Trollope took penalties😀

The Pink was great used to have it posted to me as it was the Oxford Green Un in our area. Used to que at the newsagents at 6'o' clock when it arrived on the bus from Oxford. Nowadays it would have all reports and results but in those days a lot of results and reports were just till half time!
As for penalties has to be the great Don only remember missing one in his career.

[Very] close but no cigar - 2nd on the list.

Was it Peter Noble? I remember reading once when he had dementia he would always remember back to his excellent record with penalties (although a lot of those would be with Burnley i guess)

Probably a ridiculous suggestion but not Paul bodin?

Good guess - 4th on the list. Even Reg might not have got it.  A real 'oldie' tops the list.

Had Jimmy specified "League, FA Cup and League Cup games only", Family at War would have been right, but he didn't.

Here's a link (hopefully) to a few reserve match reports i've put on flickr, 1 from 76 and the rest from 78.

The Pink ended 25 November 1978 and not 18 November 1978 as i posted earlier, the last edition was for the home FA Cup match against March Town United on that day.
