Title: STFC vs Port Vale MoM
Post by: Red Frog on Sunday, May 15, 2022, 12:45:59
Pity we sat back and let them back into it, with the inevitable result. Still, a lead’s a lead. Hope everyone is fit for the second leg.

1 McKirdy
2 Baudry
3 Williams
Plus a mention for Davison who was a workhorse, if that chance had gone in MoM

Easy McKirdy. Williams and Baudry both excellent too.

Baudry for me.
Both Centre half’s played very well. Shame Conroy was off the pitch, not in position when they scored.

Thought the Ref was shite.

Williams or Baudry for me - but good performances from everyone again.

Agree with Duke - the referee was poor - let too many bad fouls go early - how the rugby tackle in the first half (on Davison if I recall correctly) didn’t attract a yellow is beyond belief.
Also the officials didn’t spot two clear foul throws on our side - their number 2 clearly has his right leg in the air (he almost jumped) when throwing in.

McKirdy.

Baudry has been the player of the season in the "when it matters" category, if there was one.

The annual TEF MoM awards has something in store for him.  ;)

I have never felt so confident in a defender as I do in Baudry since probably Cuthbert? I'm struggling to think of anyone more recent than that.

Cut out so much today, marshalled at the back, what you need and want in an 'elder statesman' at centre back. Was so good I forgot conroy was there for most of the first half.

And let's be honest, many of us had lost all confidence in him really

For him to ignore us and to finish like this .... Incredible

When Theo Robinson clattered him in his first season I said to my dad that he feels like this team's Gordon Greer and I really hoped he wouldn't be out too long, Conroy may be captain but Baudry is in charge.

And Baudry seems to have settled Conroy down. Feel far less anxious when the captain has the ball than I did a few weeks ago

What comes from having a settled side.
Both Conroy and Baudry have an excellent understanding between them and their styles compliment each other. Both constantly communicating together and with the players around them.

Thought Garner once again got his substitutions spot on yesterday.

I think McKirdy was the difference yesterday in what was a fairly cagey game. It was his liveliness that got the 2 goals and he was a constant nuisance for their defence.

Darren Ward perhaps? I seem to remember him getting off to a shaky start before becoming excellent

My vote goes to Baudry

Similar with Alan Reeves and before him Tim Parkin, both started poorly but got better after the first poor season with us.

Shaun Taylor wasn't great in his first season and look how he turned out.

Has to go to McKirdy for the two goals and creating that chance where Davison could have made it 3-0. At the other end of the pitch, I was astounded how many headers Baudry won against a forward who looked a good few inches taller. Exactly what was needed.

Hes been doing that for the last 4 or 5 games, winning almost everything in the air, he has been towering, and up against much taller strikers too in Matt, Beck, Bogle and Gordon.

I thought Baudry was finished after last season, but I'm very pleased I was wrong, he was excellent in the last few games.

With the ball at his feet as well surprisingly to me. FGR started the move that we scored our first from taking it past an on rushing attacker. Also dribbled his way out of trouble yesterday with a neat little shimmy after a bit of a scramble on the edge of the box.

Him and Conroy definitely have stepped up.

This. Fair play to him too.

Good shout actually, although Ward's athleticism was perhaps better than Baudry at the same age, (what with his caveman diet...), I would argue Baudry is better calming everything down and wrestling the play back onto our terms, which is what this team needs most.

O'Brien hasn't done a terrible job, he's a young lad and has talent, it's just the pairing of him and Conroy, especially with (Lewis) Ward in goal was sometimes a bit of a 'watch through the fingers' setup.
