Title: Electric scooters Post by: mystical_goat on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, 17:34:04 Does anyone here own one?
I need to sell my car (anyone interested in a 2016 Mini JCW?!) and rather than replacing it I was thinking of getting an electric scooter. The savings would be huge. Buy a moped That’d remove some of the cost savings as I’d have to pay for Road tax, fuel, insurance and MOT (?).Title: Re: Electric scooters Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, May 5, 2022, 06:21:04 Will you use the electric scooter on the road or the pavement?
Both are equal nuisances. Title: Re: Electric scooters Post by: 4D on Thursday, May 5, 2022, 06:34:08 How will you cover a claim if you crash?

Don't call it road tax as someone (usually a keen push bike rider) will take the opportunity to tell you that this has not existed since the 1930s. I suspect that a ICE powered moped offers costs savings over the motor car. Alternatively, there are a number of electric scooters on the market. Yes, you will need insurance and an MOT etc but there are good reasons for that. Title: Re: Electric scooters Post by: mystical_goat on Thursday, May 5, 2022, 07:05:12 Will you use the electric scooter on the road or the pavement? Both are equal nuisances. I'd use it the same way as a bicycle or e-bicycle, so both. On my route I'd mostly be on a (very generous) cycle path beside a dual carriageway, I'm not going to be terrorising pedestrians or holding up traffic. That’d remove some of the cost savings as I’d have to pay for Road tax, fuel, insurance and MOT (?). I was wrong about road 'tax'; there's £0 on an electric moped. I suspect that a ICE powered moped offers costs savings over the motor car. I forgot about the CBT too. Would I be able to ride it on an L plate for a bit, is that still a thing? The cheapest electric mopeds are the price of the bottom of the top range electric scooters, about £2k. I have a couple bookmarked. How will you cover a claim if you crash? I won't crash :toocool:As they're not legal I doubt anyone will insure against them. Do e-bike riders have personal and 'vehicle' insurance? Almost all will only have the bike on their home insurance, at best, which only protects against theft and not collisions. Title: Re: Electric scooters Post by: JBZ on Thursday, May 5, 2022, 07:20:11 Lexmoto offer a number of electric mopeds and might be worth a look. I looked at one last year.
I think that you need to do the CBT if you passed your test after early 2001. However, I am not up to date on the rules. Title: Re: Electric scooters Post by: Nomoreheroes on Thursday, May 5, 2022, 07:28:01 As a proper cyclist I have 3rd party insurance through British Cycling.

Cut your motoring costs and get fit at the same time. Win win. Its the thing that always seems to get missed by people clamouring that cyclists don't pay road tax (most would be happy to pay it calculated at the same rate it is calculated for cars) and insurance (most regular cyclists have it through one way or the other, what you would actually be mainly doing is ensuring that little Johnny down the road doesn't ride his bike to school!)
