Title: Swindon Town v Barrow pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, 08:02:47
Last home game of the season, and it's going to be special.
Bought my ticket first thing this morning and I don't think there will be many left. Not sure but on the ticket site it looks like seats available at the far end of the Arkells, the away end?

Swindon 4-1 Barrow att: 12,021 (98 away)

I fear FGR took a lot out of us.. at least Barrow also played yesterday.

Barrow have been in reasonable form given the opposition. ok they got edged out yesterday.

I hope I'm wrong 1-1 10,256

1-2 Barrow in front of just over 10K

Another tough game and a reshuffle of the pack.
Need a few days to rest after that one. Expecting a 12,000 crowd for this.

Got 11/1 on Town to beat FGR and lose to Barrow 24 hours ago.

It’s the Swindon way.
Play the league leaders who are playing for the title and win. Play Barrow who have nothing to play for and lose.

Yep my old man always said the same since he started going in 1952, he told me never get your hopes up as its the Swindon way, and he was right.

Can currently buy tickets in the Barrow end for Saturday. I assume that is yet another ticketing mistake rather than moving Barrow to the bank because we're expecting to sell out the home end.

I wouldn't be surprised, Barrow aren't going to bring many so if the home demand is there!

Weirdly it is just the very far away arkells block though, the main block you can't buy in.

Edging towards ticketing error but if we had almost 10,500 home fans on a Tuesday night then it may be an idea. Although I think we're obligated to give covered, so if it gets to that we may just have to open the bank for town fans when other stands start getting full.

If the Barrow's fans experience is anything like the same as mine going up there earlier in the season, I wouldn't blame them for staying at home and I live 150 miles closer to them than the majority of our lot do.

I wouldn't be so sure, people don't tend to move far from home round here.

I don't know why they don't do a special for the Bank for Saturday to get as close as possible to a full house and create a bigger atmosphere.  £15 a ticket or BOGOF or something like that.

Looks like Swindon havent sent barrow tickets, and have requested barrow supporters to register on our ticketing site to buy directly through us...so maybe not a mistake

I wonder whether it has something to do with Barrows admin ability to sell tickets. When we played up there my FiL had to buy an away ticket on the day and their ticket office was literally the sort of garden shed you could buy from B&Q with two old dears sat in it.

Are we? Its not open on the link to buy tickets for it.

Maybe they're sticking the schools tickets in there initially to get it going and will then open it for buying tickets if we sell enough in other stands?

Away clubs also have to buy in batches from the Home Team if they want to be the provider of tickets.  I assume Barrow know very few would purchase so best to avoid the risk and just let them go direct to us.

Depends on how Garner sets up without Iandolo. Could revert to 3 at the back - JOB, Conroy, Frenchie.

I’d guess Gladwin will start, Williams to come on after 60.

Both Egbo and Odimayo start.

Post by: Batch on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, 16:30:11
Williams HAS to start if fit.

His directness by turning and running in the right direction was a catalyst to our first half.

No point in saving him for a playoff that won't be got if we don't win the next 2

A internally groaned when Gladwin came on yesterday. We didn't need him showing things down. But I was wrong, he shielded the back 4 well and did his fair share of defending

Last time I was on the Bank was when I worked for the NHS *boom boom*  :D

Nope it was, as referred to by JJ the v Port Vale match in the Di Canio era and Town duly spanked them 5-0 and Town collected their trophy coupled with Ferry and his "loose" shorts.

Vale's leading goalscorer that season? None other than Marc Richards.

Memory tells me there was nearly 13'000 that day. Now the Bank is open, it'd be nice to get close to that figure again. Has got to be 12k+ minimum.

In other news, has anyone got a Walsall ticket going spare? I'll buy you a pint of Banks's just so you can say:

"You can save your thank's - I'll have a pint of Banks's"  :pint:

Barrow have nothing to play for beyond spoiling the party. Phil Brown had them fired up on Tuesday, over us like a rash, competitive and mobile, they looked really useful at times and tbh they were unlucky to lose.

Prepare for a battle, and with the big crowd’s backing should be enough, just won’t be easy ! Good luck, Town.

Although you did us both a massive favour on Tuesday, the hobby jobbies should still pip us, probably deservedly in truth over the season.  Hopefully you’re just taking the longer scenic route via the arch, rooting for you, geddon Town.

Was an incredible experience the Barrow away game.
Train cancelled the moment we got arrived on the station, then “right, common we’re driving this.”

It was pissing down with rain, a long and awful journey but the most prominent takeaway after still arriving early and finding a street parking spot. It was silent.
We were the only car in the street.
Equally there was nobody on the street and complete eerie silence. We decided the supermarket was the best option.

It’s grim for sure. Know a few contractors who have worked in the Town and were not complimentary.
Drugs and Booze grim reality to get through. Unemployment particularly for the Young is high.

Mind you give me those Northern outposts over Forest Green and Stevenage.

Just find the Northern folk generally superb.

10 of us Corporate tomorrow, have arranged something as a surprise with the club for my eldest lad.
Long day and just hope we win to make it special.

We’ve done the season every game home and away.
An old friend that I’ve not seen in 30 years will be on another table (Sunderland), as well as my old best mate from school (Swindon),  some stories will come out no doubt. The Sunderland lad was the spitting image of the lead singer from the rock band Journey 😂
Somehow we have all aged now but “we won’t stop believing.”

Can’t wait, early start and late return what possibly could go wrong :(

Repect for doing every home and away game which includes midweek matches, at times a logistical nightmare along with the rising fuel cost and ear ache from the Mrs when she picked you up from the railway station!
I'm guessing your taking the train tomorrow so that you can have a few🍺🍺🍺

Yes the early train.

By the way by the time we get back from Walsall it will be 9,026 miles this season.⚽️

Nice summary! It sounds a really depressing place to live but it must have it's good parts😀

I spent 3 weeks there in the late seventies working on my first Manpower placement, with about a dozen others from the Swindon area. Rhys Neal is the only guy in the group I remember, a fairly well known Face. We stayed in a B&B on Walney Island and worked 10 hour days at British Cellophane. We were out and about every night in Barrow, there was a wide choice of clubs and pubs, mostly with "Turns", singers, comedians and bands. a memorable night was had in Barrow Supporters
Club. One of the guys by chance met a girl he'd known from working at Butlins, me and him and one of her friends went back to her place and had a couple of drinks and her parents made us sandwiches, very hospitable! There were a lot of good people living there then, seems unemployment may have dragged it down a bit. Shame.
Happy days.

We quite liked it - Found a fantastic Turkish restaurant called Kapadokya.  Amazing food but also an experience as its been turned into a cave!   Had a walk along the beach - yes bits of it were glowing but perfectly pleasant.

Some decent pubs too - Jefferson's you could stay in all day, bar with sky sports, half a dozen real ales and a restaurant at the back with a decent fry up and some high end gastro-bollox for dinner.

Worst ground I've ever had this misfortune to go to - weather was shite too of course.

Seen a couple of people on Twitter who had spare Walsall tickets. Imagine a few more will crop up next week too (especially if Saturday doesn’t go to plan!)

Cheers R4E. I'll maybe scout one or two people out. True that there may be some more. I guess there is a 66.6% chance (draw and lose) of more people giving them away after tomorrow or a 33.3% chance (Town win) of there being nothing available other than grabbing a home ticket...

What's the chances, if Town are 0-1 down at HT tomorrow, and someone says "you can have my Walsall ticket pal" and then Town end up winning 2-1/3-1 :)

All in all, although it'd be great to go to Walsall (in the away end) with something still to play for, I wouldn't mind going anyway just to give the players a "thanks", as it seems they do seem to have found some more adrenalin and are giving it one final go!

Latent support. All people needed was a reason to come back - and to feel appreciated and not fleeced.

Obviously, I hope we go up but it’s not really for the prospect of higher league football, it’s because I feel everybody connected to the club deserve it.

If not this season, next.

I'll stick with my pessimistic prediction approach which seemed to have worked so well recently. Think it's going to be the case of after the Lord mayor's show today and we'll be ground down and eventually bored into submission and suffer a 2-0 home defeat.

I'm still on hols and there is a big screen and party down at the sea front tonight showing what they expect to be Tranzonspor's title winning match. Oddly even though Trabzon is miles away from where we are there is an obsession with them. Might have to Don the Swindon shirt and get involved if things go well today!

Great story Munich it's amazing when a place is mentioned there's always a story of someone with a connection many years ago.

Thanks Jimmy, you're welcome.

The Manpower office manager picked up me and a guy called Tony in Swindon early in the morning, for the drive up to Barrow. We had to pick up another guy in Gloucester, Gordon.  Driving on A417, by the time we got to the dip before Birdlip the snow was very thick and a lorry had jackknifed and blocked the road. We had to turn back and take a side road to the A345, eventually having to be towed the last few yards onto the main road by a friendly farmer with his tractor.
The weather improved a bit and we reached Barrow in time for the evening meal in the B&B (Probably the present day King Alfred). About 10 other Swindon guys had been there a week and they had hired two strippers to give a private show that night in one of the bedrooms. Tony, Gordon and I missed out on that...

So how should the team approach this today?
High tempo start to try & get the early goal then control the game or adopt a more patient approach & conserve some energy for later on.

Banker's comments earlier in the thread indicate that Barrow won't be parking the bus.
An open game would suit us.

The desire of the team to get this challenge done was palpable on Tuesday night, but the crowd needs to do it's bit once again, which is always easier under lights for some reason.

How the time has flown.
The Roll of Honour for the fallen is a fine but very poignant thing.

Hopefully one more home game still to come after today.

It was quite short notice I think, so not that many fans on the bank that night.

I hated watching games from the Bank, when the sun is out you can't see the goal at the Town End if its bright unless you wear a hat or sunglasses.

On the plus side, you can get a suntan if its warm enough!

Down to single seats in the Arkells now too, so that is virtually sold out as well.

Stratton Bank could be near full by kick off. Wonder if they've been making Barrow buy in the very far block in case they need a few extra seats in the away end on the near side or below. Can't imagine would cause any bother.

I remember going on the Bank with my Dad during the 4th Division Champoins season, one game, can't remember which one, for some reason I had the money and was meant to pay for my old man as we went through the turnstiles I didn't  and just paid for me. Wondered over to our usual barrier and sat down on the terrace and started to read the programme, wondered where Dad was but thought he had gone for a piss or something. About 10 minutes later a copper comes over and says "Are you Dan, you left your dad outside without any money"  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:
He wasn't best pleased with me, Dad that is, the copper thought it was hysterical.
Also remember the Lou Macros Red and White Army chant going between the Town End and The Bank that season.

I never realised that League one finished their season today and not next week like League 2 and the Championship does.

I see Crewe, Doncaster and Wimbledon have been relegated to League 2 already and its between Morecambe, Fleetwood and Jills for the final relegation spot with just 2 points between them all.

I never realised that League one finished their season today and not next week like League 2 and the Championship does.

I see Crewe, Doncaster and Wimbledon have been relegated to League 2 already and its between Morecambe, Fleetwood and Jills for the final relegation spot with just 2 points between them all.

Gillingham v Rotherham they both need to win😀

I would be happy to see Jills relegated, scummy club that it is.

It will be close to 13k, I heard we had pre sold 1,000 for the Bank so hopefully a few more walk ups today will add to that.

Nothing against the guy, a pity that he wasn't able to get much of a tune out of a largely Flitcroft assembled squad.

Beautiful on the ball, ugly in the box.

Deserved a second but left needing a second.

Solid, but I hope we don't rue all of these missed chances

McKirdy looked dead on his feet at the end. His touch has been poor today.

Barry has had lots of room but done little with it

Baudry and Conroy have done well again.

Egbo doesn't look up for it

Odimayo has done well defending, but we are missing a bit on the left in some of the link up.

Ward worries me whenever the ball is played back to him. He's not done anything wrong, but it just worries me!

Well Tranmere can win (if we draw) that will make us level on points.
They’d have to win 9-0 to over take us via goal difference…

Phew. Totally deserved and should have won a lot easier. But we did win. So happy.

Davison didn’t stop running, same for Payne, Reed and McKirdy. Odimayo had a good game, as did Egbo. Didn’t see much (from my vantage point) of Barry in the second half but he did well in the first. Williams didn’t have his best game but his  class is always there for all to see. Baudry was epic. Conroy did his job. I felt Ward could have done a bit better for the goal but he made amends almost straight after our second (still don’t know who scored it). He made a good save from the looping deflection.

Got caught up in the police dealing with a bunch of chav scrotes by the Barrow coach. Wanted to see someone gat tasered. Alas

- Progressing nicely
- Rehab going well
- Hopefully back for next season
- Used to get repeats of injuries. This was a freak injury
- Medical team had got him into a good position prior to the injury
- Hoping to be invited back for pre-season. Club has been good to him
- Feels he is at a great club. Loved every minute and hopes to stay

What a win. What a fucking roller coaster at 83 - 85 mins and then the following 14mins that followed!

This is why we both love and hate football

Just realised Town have scored the most goals in L2 (74 to FGR 73) so far

Knew it had to be over 13k today. So good to see the Bank with fans in again!

Fuck me, I'm going on the piss (probs 3 cans max ;) )

Could easily have won that by 6. Several close range misses. McKirdy's cheeky chip goes in and that's the stuff of Cantona!

Which one of you cunts has a conveniently available spare ticket for Walsall?  :D

You. Fucking. Reds!  :pint: :pint:

Garner:
- Fantastic its in our own hands
- Played ever so well first half. Should have been 3-0 up
- Missed more in the second
- Huge threat from set pieces
- The response to their goal from the crowd and the players was superb
- Reed showed fantastic composure to take the extra touch. Could see as soon as he hit it that it was in
- Need to make it count next week
- Will review and look for ways to improve
- Last game at Walsall is a huge game
- First half our bravery to play when they jumped on us was good
- Created so many opportunities. Didnt score as much as we could, but didnt let heads drop
- Odimayo was excellent today as LB on his wrong side
- We stood up to a lot of physicality
- Head scratching at 8 mins extra.
- Managed closing stages really well. Any free kick from the half way line onwards is what they wanted
- Still in for a chance of the automatics.
- We go into games trying to win. We will do the same next week
- The 2 victories against Walsall mean nothing going into next week
- Two days off for the players and then start to prepare for next week
- Will keep this next week the same as every week of the season
- Big difference having fans on all 4 sides.
- Over 13k is incredible for L2

Williams:
- A tough game
- Could have been out of sight. Enough chances to win 3 games
- Showed character to come back from the sucker punch
- Touch to set up the goal was brilliant
- Mixed it up a bit today. Balance of the team is good
- Know Davison from Charlton. Told the team how much he runs
- Fans have been excellent
- Hopefully one last game
- Great to have things back in our hands, but frustrating, as we have been the best team in the league, but not consistent enough
- No game is easy. Walsall are a good side.
- Always remain confident in himself and the team
- If we were to get promoted the team we have would do well in L1
- Fitness coach reminds him every day that he has played many more games this year than ever before
- Been great to be a part of. Enjoying playing in the middle
- Knew he'd enjoy it under Garner as he would play him in the middle.
- Bradford are a good side and have done us a few favours.

Depends on your length of service I guess and how happy you are in your current job. I've been in my job nearly 33 years and I'm in my late 50's so it would be an easy decison for me but I also get the insecurity stress and worry it puts on the family.

Totally agree my man. Can't be trying corner flag game management at 63mins...

Today was an erratic match though and fair fucks to Barrow who played like that had something to play for. Was nice to see PB back; I'm sure he enjoyed himself in a full stadia. Also fair fucks to the 250+ from Barrow (or wherever they are based), mind you a nice sunny day, on the piss and nothing to play for just a day out (I wonder if any of them spotted JBZ taking photos at the Bus Station?!)...

All in all, game management really shouldn't have been needed today, Town totally dominated the first half and could eaily have been 4/5/6 up at H/T. Work on finishing (seems odd to say it considering Town have scored 74gls) and wonder just how many bloody goals Town could have had, maybe pushing a ton!

Good reffing to allow the advantage in the build up for the second goal. What the fuck was Ward doing or thinking when he appears to spoon the ball past his right side for the equaliser.

Controversial opinion but if fit I’d bring Wollacott back in, Ward just isn’t good for my nerves. He almost massively fucked up right at the end trying to be clever leaving it until the absolute last second to pick up the ball.

I wasn’t as nervy today as Tuesday, however, this one could have been a massive banana skin, which we nearly slipped up on. That said we didn’t and bagged three valuable points to keep the pressure up on those around us. Had certain players been more composed and a bit less greedy/glory hunters we could have had a hatful but then again as I have said before they’re in L2 for a reason. Still immensely proud of the club from management down to the ball boys and girls for what has been a most memorable season on so many levels.

Thinking back to that Cambridge away game in August I said to my DNA on the way back that I had a sneaking feeling we’d do well this season irrespective of the massive hill that had to be climbed on so many levels after Pee Lowers shit show. PL? No thanks, I’ve had so much joy and despair supporting town through the lower leagues, I wouldn’t have it any other way. See some of you at Marine v Corsham Tuesday or if not Saturday at the Bescot again. COYR.

Though he could have done better with their goal. Harsh?

But he also made a smart stop from the deflected shot.

And we won

And presumably Walacott is off.

I'd forgotten about that theakston. A real heart in the mouth moment.

Though he could have done better with their goal. Harsh?

But he also made a smart stop from the deflected shot.

And we won

And presumably Walacott is off.

His kicking is too sketchy, he has this annoying mannerism where when the ball is passed back to him he points both sides for the defenders to spread which is an unnecessary distraction. He just needs to concentrate on controlling and kicking the ball as he must know it’s a weakness of his.

First time i've ever watched from the bank. Really odd experience. Felt like being at an away game. Enjoyed it though.

Made hard work of that in the end but was worth it for Reed's goal. Brilliant moment that sent 13k home happy. Win again next week and we enter the play-offs on the back of five wins.

Feel like we have some big game players in McKirdy, Payne and Williams so would expect us to go well in a mini tournament as well.

Going up under the arch  :pint:

Job done, after a scare today. I thought we looked leggy from the off, and didn’t come out with the same energy and couldn’t press them with nearly the same urgency as we did on Tuesday. But none of that is surprising, and it’s not a dig. Tuesday was exceptional, today we crawled over the line. Get some proper rest into them, and have another go next week.

Lolz, I'm not expecting a freebie. Quite happy to pay face value but how about we work together to secure any tickets? That's probably the most fan friendly way. So whilst I may have "first refusal" (I am in part joking but still ;) ), if I were to be offered 3 or 4 tickets (in one go or separately) then I'll gladly make sure you get one. Likewise you could agree to do the same back?

Anyway, I'm working on a cunning plan!

I'm sure that would have been a sickening sight.

However, in terms of judgement, I feel Barton's managerial abilities were somewhat underrated here earlier this season.

How different we have looked at home against FGR and Barrow.
Both teams not coming with a tight “two banks of four.” Looked more like away performances where we’ve been able to move the ball into areas and exploit the width much better.

Found out an interesting fact yesterday that I couldn’t believe.
Apparently we have the 3rd smallest pitch in league two !!! Evidently we want to increase the size.
Historically if memory serves we used to have one of the biggest.

Not many posts on the Barra forum other than about 10 posts slating Banks.

Quote
1 - 1 a deserved equaliser

Swindon gave us a lesson on how to manage a game out, don’t think we got out of our half in added time.

Good game, but this one we could have won if they had played the first half like the second.
Not entirely sure they were watching the same game as me, I thought Barrow were slow and pedestrian and rarely even threatened and in no way even deserved even the 1 goal they got.

Didn't McMahon reduce the width of the pitch in the mid 90s because it gave teams too much space?

Well, it's never straightforward is it and it's been like that since I first started going.
Should have been a comfortable lead at half time then some ropey keeping followed by a quick response to put is in control our fate.

Won't feel as confident on next Saturday as I was yesterday, but that's the way of it.
A full week to rest up & prepare should be of great benefit & I'd expect McKirdy to be more on song than he was yesterday.

If I remember, one of the first things that Hoddle did was to make the pitch bigger.

There is a fair bit of room to enlarge the actual overall area.
A bigger pitch is supposed to favour a passing game and some visiting sides would need a bigger bus to park.

We were chatting with a guy from hospitality yesterday who told us Phil Brown had the pitch narrowed whilst he was here.

Next season we’re adding a meter either side.

I think that’s right - in the build up to the LC final in 1969  I remember reading that our pitc( was bigger than Wembley.

Poor finishing meant that in the end we made hard work of it yesterday - should have been comfortably ahead by half time. Some of the players looked tired by the end - impact of Tuesday (mentally as well as physically) I suppose.
I think those blaming Ward for the goal are being a bit harsh - we can’t defend those free kicks properly (very similar goal conceded to Sutton and Orient among others) and gave their man a free header on the six yard line. More a collective failure for me than Ward alone. Having said that I agree with those who said Wolacott’s kicking is better - Ward still isn’t comfortable with the ball at his feet, although he has improved a bit since before Christmas.

Glad Walsall is not a “dead rubber” - hopefully an enjoyable day.

As well as the roll call of honour, I thought the gesture of having the group of long standing supporters as mascots was a brilliant idea / gesture from the club. One of them started going to games in 1946.

Its hardly ideal but honestly the view from the bank is so superior to The Town End its unreal. With a roof and sorting the facilities, I'd like to keep it as a home end, especially when that end is demolished.

The portaloos didn't bother me, but what did was only having one of the serving huts open meaning there was a queue wrapping around the back of the bank for most of the game. Ran out of all drinks and most food before even half time as well. Club could have made a lot more on that.

Other than the actual condemned toilets at the back, it's the Don Rogers side that is a real mess, but gotta be some good potential to use that space around there.

https://truststfc.tv/stratton-bank/

Can't see the pitch from there, so would hope for a bar serving alcohol.

Reading that link, its actually the bogs round that end? I remember going down the steps to the back when I was a kid to urinals though.

There looks to be a reasonable amount of space both at the back and The Don Rogers side for new facilities though.

Thing is if there was existing toilets there, most importantly there is obviously drains and water there (plus with the scoreboard there is obviously power (not Lee!)), TBH the rest is comparatively cheap to sort for at least a short term season or two.
