Title: Greatest Crocks 11
Post by: Red Frog on Thursday, March 24, 2022, 13:10:24
So the chat about Zeki Fryers got me thinking about the players who could have been great for us if they either weren't made of balsa wood, or we didn't accidentally break them. I'm thinking Dave Bennett, Keith O'Halloran, Barry Corr...

Who would be in your Top "if only" 11 if they'd been able to maintain their fitness while at STFC?

A bit harsh as he was already a great keeper but Jimmy Allan had his career ruined by the thug Steve Johnson of Rochdale.

Does Brezovan count? He came back from his arm breaks but he was a shadow of the player afterwards.

Was going to mention Gareth Davies, signed by Jimmy Quinn.
Less than 30 appearances over 4 seasons.

There is probably an alternate reality where Eddie Howe was signed after an impressive loan spell and going onto to play more than 250 games for the club, before retiring and leading us into the Premier League in consecutive seasons as manager.

I was at the Jimmy Allan game and the Keith O'Halloren match as well as the Dave Bennett games all horrible injuries.

The game vs Bournemouth where KOH got his leg broken by Wade Elliott was the only time that I can remember that Swindon have played a league game at a non league ground (Dorchester during renovation of Dean Court).

Did any other non-league team play at the Withdean stadium or was that solely BHA?

Twerton is a valid one.

Huish Park was when Yeovil were in the league nobody else used it and Withdean was not used by a non league team as their regular ground when Brighton played there as Withdean FC were not officially in the football pyramid. :)

I suspect that for a large number of posters, their terms of reference begin with the mid 80s.

I met her on a grassy bank my hands were all a quiver,
I undid her suspender belt and her leg fell in the river.

I always find it more helpful in a thread about previous players to name players not previously mentioned and having the courtesy to at least read others posts and opinions.

Here to help as you can't be bothered to read back.

From the late 1960s - Barry Lowes - winger signed from Coventry, injured in his first home game in August and I don’t think he played again for us.
1970s Terry Hubbard - came up through the youth team, Welsh under 23 international (in those days it was U23 not U21) but had a lot of injuries. Eventually left and played in South Africa.

I know Jimmy’s career was ended  early, but he played a lot of games and I don’t remember him missing many from injury until that incident v Rochdale - so I was a bit surprised about his inclusion in a greatest crocks list. I think of that as meaning a player who was unavailable because of injury more often than he was available (like Lyden of the current squad).

Think he missed 2 games for religion but since his injury has now missed a consecutive 1,800+ games :D

I remember, as a mere pup, hearing Keith O'Hallorans leg break over the crisp afternoon air at Dorchester.

First time I'd ever heard anything like that and the sound is something I will never forget.

We could probably get close to filling a World Cup Squad of 23, unfortunately.
