I don't like our name written without 'Town' after it! (Don't know why)

I don't think I can watch this weekend - After the last 2 games, I'm really disappointed!

There will be more than 9200, id say over 10k after our latest results.
I'm not going to attempt to predict the scoreline, I know I will derail the recent form.
I'd be happy with another 3 points watching the same attacking play.

I know...like there was just too much effort involved in typing the word 'Town' :hmmm:

2-0 Davison, Barry

10,000 crowd would be nice but possibly a bit much to hope for given that the away support will barely fill a mini bus.

I’m bring 4 non supporting Swindon blokes.
Not forgetting Walsall was an original Saturday and most of those tickets would have been previously purchased that raised the crowd number.
Still reckon another 9,800 is likely.

I’m going the opposite, Town 2-1 a last gasp winner to send home just shy of 9,500 of the Town faithful. On another note, did anyone ever locate Joe?

Another 3 goals for the rampant strike force of McKirdy,Davison and Barry.Probably concede 1 though,4 successive clean sheets is a tall order

Like the previous MDT. Going into the previous match I would have settled for a point, with the caveat of just edging a win. Walsall was a nice surprise to check after missing the match and somehow any form of contact or media regarding STFC. Sometimes it's nice to go OG for a bit.

Anyway, like the last match the first goal will again be key. Could be a frustrating result after being treated to 3 clean sheets on the bounce as well as 3 high scores too. Some will feel a draw would be annoying - some would lose it if we lost. All the good work, changes and adapting that has been done by the STFC coaching team could be easily be unpicked by some fans. I still believe there is a fine balance/margin in these things but then again, it is the fine margins at any elite sport level which makes the difference between a winner and a loser.

I'll go 1-1 with a heavy caveat of whoever gets the first goal could win by just the one (any iteration of 1-0, 0-1, 2-1, 1-2). On current form Town clearly have a goal in them but Town haven't really have a problem scoring this season; it was conceding silly and soft goals that was. Now that appears to have been resolved there's every chance Town should be confident of not only scoring but holding a narrow lead. Which is something they will have to be able to do against tougher opposition - if the aspirations of POs (no fuck it, autos) is a target they are aiming to achieve.

Score: Non-committal either way by one goal
Att: 10,153
A goal from Davison, it's Davison
Reed yellow
Payne on the bench

first of all this thread seems early for once...i like it!

if manager does his job and keeps a fire lite under the players ass and keeps them hungary, then Town wins by 2

if he doesn't and Town comes out cocky or complacent with their recent success like we have seen in the past loss by 2.

let hope they see the prize is attainable and go for it.  I think as someone else mentioned earlier, the defense seems not to be giving up those silly goals like in the past so holding onto a lead can be done.

As I said before, we score the first goal and get Salford having to get forward and we’ll roast them just like Walsall.

Confidence, quite rightly, should be sky high.

If you'd have told me a couple of weeks ago that Aguiar and Iandolo would keep Williams and Payne out the side, I'd of called you mad.

That's exactly the proposition we face though. Even when Payne is ready, how on earth does he get in?

A nice problem to have.

I think Payne will be integrated slowly into the side. Iandolo hasn't really done anything wrong and is working well with Tomlinson. I imagine Payne will be on the bench and might get 20-30 minutes tomorrow.

Don't think we'll see him tomorrow. Not according to this morning's presser - unless he's bluffing, of course - but he doesn't usually:

Thanks for sharing that. Yeah it does read that Jack Payne won't be involved tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how Dabre gets on at Chippenham. It certainly did Aguiar no harm!

I'd disagree on that, Iandolo has has done well recent weeks and would not deserve to lose his place because Payne is fit again, think Payne may be used from the bench for a few games

Nobody will walk into the team right now and have to settle best for places on the bench.
Clearly unless injuries or fitness decisions override.

Won 3, scoring 11 and conceding a big fat 0.

What a great position to be in for our academy Manager 😂🙌

Yep. & LL will miss this one because, I have finally succumbed to covid. As I suspected I might at some point. Anyway three points whether we concede or not. It’s all about winning and as you say 9/9 11-0 why change the team? Unless and injury arises or there is a good tactical reason.

I had it from Christmas Eve, still have the bloody cough, but fortunately the actual virus was not bad for me.

As for tomorrow, starting to feel confident that we can win at home so really hope we can continue the good run of form.

The Sags home average so far has been just 6,300 and their highest home gate was a couple of weeks ago vs Walsall when they had a massive 8,003! and that was with 700 Walsall fans. Exeter will take about 1,100ish so I doubt they will pass 9,000 TBH.

Our home average so far has been 9,000 by comparison.

I expect us to get close to 10,000 today even with under 100 Salford travelling.

Interestingly this is the first time Salford have ever played at the CG as the previous meeting was cancelled due to covid and Town winning both the previous away meetings by a single goal.

Its nowhere near the 12,300 capacity, will be 9,500 max I would think. They only had 7,300 vs us so even if Exeter sell out 1,200 which is doubtful the pull of Exeter isn't as big as the pull of Swindon.

Rovers have only had a single 10k+ crowd in the last 4 years and that was vs Sunderland 3 years ago when they had 10,009.

I think the Gas are looking at around 10,500 on their forum so comparing the two attendances could be close but hopefully we will still beat them. Salfords following is such a hard one to predict as I have no idea what they average so I will say anying from 90-120

1,129 was their allocation, I over estimated.

Quote
1 Feb 2022 — Tickets for Exeter City's match against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, ... We were allocated a total 1129 tickets (850 terrace and 279 seated).

Never knew you could get withdrawal symptoms just by cutting out sugar. 2 weeks now and I’ve had zero sugar - apart from that which may occur naturally in some fruit.

My morning blood glucose level has dropped from an eye watering 327 to 130 today!

Apologies to the thread!

Well they took 56 to Sutton but 130 to Northampton, so could be somewhere between those 2, but this is their first ever visit to Swindon so may be close to 170?

Salford could well have ex Town loanee Jordan Turnbull and ex Town trialists Brandon Thomas-Asante playing today if they line up as they have recently. BTA is their leading scorer this season on 6 goals.

Their recent form is WLWDW and the last 5 away games WWLDW including wins at Barrow, Port Vale and Orient.

They have only conceded 3 goals in any single game 3 times, at FGR, Newport and home to Col U this season.

They sit in 11th place with 12 wins, 8 draws and 11 defeats. They have the tightest defence in the division outside of the top 3 with just 29 goals let in so far but with just 35 goals scored they are the 4rd lowest scoring side in the top 18 positions.

They have the 32 year old beanpole 6 foot 6 ex 1982ers striker Matt Smith who will be a handful for JOB today, a player probably too good for this division.

They play with the tradiontal big and little partnership up front and like to play to Smiths aerial ability.

Make no bones about it, this lot will not be as easy to beat as our last 3 opponents and must not be taken lightly.

Ok half.

Think Salford have used the ball well but it still seems like all their good play starts with us giving the ball away.

How their guy stood on the line missed, I don’t know.

Ref has given every single bit of physical contact as a foul on every single player who isn’t called Josh Davison. Took 39 minutes for Davison to win a foul despite being fouled 24377373 times

Not a great 1st half by Town that, a couple of decent chances but nothing much to shout about, Salford arent a bad side TBF to them.

0-0 HT. Enjoyable game. At least Salford have come to play and are giving as good as they are getting. McKirdy getting into many good positions but just lacking that end product today. Hopefully he will come good in the second half

And Turnbull is fully aware that the ref isnt giving Davison anything too despite Turnbull best efforts to hold him back and foul him all the time.

Also think when Harry and Barry get it in behind the defender they should flash it across first time rather than check back.

Oh and that corner. Second worse corner I’ve ever seen the Town take. Only beaten by Miglioranzi and Igoe (maybe?!) doing the ‘I’m pretending to leave it for you but actually I’ve taken it and the balls in play but no one will notice’ apart from the defender who just ran and got ball before Igoe did

Its bizarre

Ref is extremely whistle happy on every other occasion. Like he’s not favouring a team, he’s not giving some of the others - he’s giving all of the others.

I think with not much working for McKirdy so far that we may see Williams coming on for him after about 10-15 mins if its still not working. Shame as McKirdy has not been at his best for a couple of games now.

Barry is our best attacking outlet.

Considering they have the biggest budget in this league I think they’ll be slightly disappointed to be referred to as ‘not bad

Which makes what garner has done under an embargo even more impressive.

Salford pretty solid with a good shape, get men behind the ball pretty quickly. They have an obvious out ball and a good front pair who have got free a few times. Final ball has been poor.

As for us, passing a bit off today so can't find a way through. Improve that and be a bit braver with the forward pass we should be ok

It's not up to it's usually standards, a mixture of frost sheets for the city game and lack of investment over the past 2 years has seen to that.  The new owner has promised investment in the summer to bring it back to it's usual standards

Not sure it is all that bad.  They made mistakes for sure but young players who have stood tall for a month.  But all town is going to have is young players.  Whole team was not very energetic or sharp today.

Another thought.....players look tired. Lack of preseason hasn't helped but we're losing games late far too much.

I slated Garner for his tactics last time we lost after being ahead at home and I stand by my comments, but that wasn't even the issue today.

The Town fan in me knew it would be tight. Got that key first goal but Town just weren't quite with it today. Bizarre goal of theirs for the winner really so possible it should have ended a draw. Would've taken that. Not to be. Still tight as a Nun's Chuff after all top three lost too.

Happy to be a woke human, living in a relatively democratic country (despite our issues here) and hope that all of those in the Ukraine currently can come out of this safely and with limited destruction. For some reason, I came away from today feeling very similar. Usually something like this would ruin my weekend, but with everything going on in Ukraine I found today much easier to take. It sort of puts it all into perspective.

In regards to the football, perhaps today we got brought back down to earth a little. The 3 game win streak coming against 3 quite useless sides. Can only beat what's in front of us and all that but Salford were a lot more organised and there was a sense of inevitability before they scored that corner. We're a great side when things are going well but quickly lose our heads when sucker punched.

Average at best and no real stand out performers. Could have ground out a 1-0 scrappy win but didn’t.

I haven’t watched many games this season but if Salford were rubbish or garbage then there must be some really shit teams in this league. I thought they moved the ball well when they had it defended well when they didn’t.

As for us…

Thing that frustrated me more than anything was when Harry and Barry got the ball outwide with a bit of space. It was always one touch, two touch, get closed down, go back to Reed or the full back or inside to one of the midfields or run at the full back and get crowded out.

Would have liked on occasion to see them just get it out their feet, open their foot up and put it on low and hard across the box. Give Davison something to go for, give the defenders & keeper something to deal with. I mean chance are Davison would have just been pushed/pulled/kicked the ground with the ref letting it go but no harm in trying.

Davison offer us nothing today imo. Not through his ability just that he had no protection from the ref who was extremely whistle happy with every other bit of physical contact. Think Davison had a moan to the ref about the one where the defender (was it Turnbull?) on the floor clearly lifted a leg up to kick Davison as he was going over/past him. Ref didn’t give it Davison has a moan, ref decided to give him noting all game. Even at the death we put a cross in and the defender had both hands on Davison shoulders in order to get above him to win the headers, soft but they get given as penalties these days.

Reed, was everywhere and always open for the pass. Which I think at times was a bit detrimental to the team. Reed is always open but is always usually your safe pass. At times it felt like when our players for further up the pitch it was like ‘I could take my man on but Reeds there’ or ‘I could try a through ball but  Reeds there’ or ‘I could whip this in the box but Reeds there’

Makes me wonder whether it’s great movement and play on Reeds part to always be available to receive the ball or whether Salford just left unmarked because they knew he’d be the safe option and the one we were most likely to take…I mean no doubt we’d struggle massively without him but possibly (on today’s showing at least) we need to less reliant on him being 5 yards backwards/sideways….

So vI watched in horror as Jonny Williams got sexually assaulted by a |Salford player, endless incidence4s of Davidson being rugby tackled to the ground, players tackled through from behind. I had no idea these things are now no longer fouls and  no longer criminal acts. As for Swindon, boys against men. Does that make Salford a bunch of paedo's?

It’s a worrying trend. Ahead against Rovers, Exeter and now Salford and only 1 point gained.

Chuck in the debacle v Colchester and it’s clear where the problem lies. Our defenders are more than good enough for L2 so Garner has to sort out the defensive organisation.

I think the truth is - there aren’t really any good teams in L2.

Title: Re: Swindon v Salford pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: JoeMezz on Sunday, February 27, 2022, 10:05:22
Garner has done extremely well to assemble a top 7 squad effectively twice. You can tell with his coaching the players we have are getting better and better (with a fresh new batch in January to try to mould). The issue with him which hopefully he can improve with experience is game management. McKirdy should have been taken off 10 mins sooner and I don’t even agree with keeping Davison on whose back was fucked. Think Davison was actually the player closest to the ball from the corner where the winner was scored.

TBF we lost the game with 2 moments of bad defending, Salford didn't win the game as such.

We could have made us a bit tighter at the back when in front but we didn't both Barry and McGirty getting injured cost us as it meant we couldn't attack as freely so were forced into defending more, which we failed at.

Davison was treated very badly by the ref who was onbviously related to Turnbull as he never once gave a foul against him all game despite him almost bullying Davison all game and apparently injuring him too.

Just a bad day at the office...again....could easily have been a win but lack of concentration cost us at the back....again.

And sorry but JML adds nothing to the side when he comes on, we need another streiker option on the bench rather than JML and Parsons so when our strikers are injured as all 3 were yesterday we can at least bring on a comparable player to the one going off, which we only did with Williams yesterday.

I think Parsons shows more promise but he needs to go out on loan to Chippenham etc and get more game time as hes just not quite good enough at the moment, much as Twine wasn't when he first broke into the 1st team.

He needs to be starting matches to improve and L2 is a bit too big a jump for him currently.

I agree...Salford was not that good....average as you say....swindon just didnt take advantage of an opportunity.  Be it tired, hurt, etc....unfortunately we just dont have anyone on the bench to come in for the strikers when they get hurt...i think the defense is much much better than what was here before Christmas.  They just made mental mistakes, happens i guess, they are young.
what is unfortunate, the whole process will start over again this summer...Town has been able to get a hold of some good players that could grow into a nice team but until they can buy them and keep them, it is just going to be ups and downs.

but make no mistake, Town lost that game, Salford did not win it.

My IPTV was on the blink on Saturday so only caught the first half. From what I could tell Salford were organised and disciplined and we seemed to not quite be 'on it' as we ended Tuesday, which of course it to be expected. A few passes overhit and going out of play etc. The main incident of course was when Salford probably should have had a penalty and us a red card as their player was held back when trying to force the ball over the line. I couldn't believe at the time he failed to score (it looked over the line also) but replays show he was held back. That said, Salford didn't seem to make a big deal of it. We definitely had luck on our side there.

As stated I didn't see the second half but surprising to see McKirdy score from a corner. It's just a shame we couldn't see out the game. Not the end of the world despite the frustration of being 1 up and losing the game, hopefully will be a kick up the arse for the run in. Now to read back and see how wrong I am about the first half incident!!

Oh and I know he's a club legend but Bodin wasn't great on co-comms on Saturday. Don't get me wrong I bet it's a bloody difficult job but I think he was calling McKirdy, "McGurty" and mixed Salford up with Salisbury on one occasion. Minor gripes all told.

Ignoring FGR the table is really tight from 2-8 separated by just 4 points. There are quite a few matches midweek where that will change but the run of 3 consecutive wins has really put us right back in the automatic promotion picture.

Nowhere near ready for that. Not got a strong enough spine without loans.

Maybe we do, maybe we don't. But the fact remains that we are only 4 points off second place currently and so we are definitely in with a shout. You are probably right about the lack of depth and with Barry now out for 3 weeks and McKirdy possibly with injury problems it's going to be a big test of character for what is a young team and squad overall.

Did Mckirdy get injured during the goal celebration?

Yes.

He was fine running into the celebration and could hardly walk afterwards.

Maybe it's because I notice it more, but we do seem to have more injuries than other sides and they're always months long rather than days. Or is that paranoia on my part?

I think he was injured during the goal but the adrenaline overcame the pain.

You can see him reaching for his ankle during the celebration

Hoping to make it on Saturday, have been ill for 2 weeks  ::)

Swindon 2-0 Salford att: 10,184 (93 away)

Not a bad attendance guess, pity about the scoreline.

The difference is now, we are not rushing them back so that mught be the reason it seems like players are out longer.

Havent read back and been busy...

Same old Swindon, just as we think we have turned the corner....wham!

Shame for the big gate.

Started to get slow in the final third again after Tuesdays fizzing at will.

Salford did well and were well organised.

How was the bar in the town end?

I think it was a horsebox with a load of cans in it.

It was in the car park. I didn't bother.

Honestly until the ground is developed, its a means to an end. At least this one isn't a fire hazard like the makeshift one Jed made. I'll take a can in a carpark for £4 or whatever is inevitably is over nothing.

Absolutely, beer>no beer if you need one and £4 a can is far cheaper than £7.50 a can of Carlsberg at Wembley.

If you want or need a beer then its an ideal cheap solution to a problem and with mark ups the club is likely to make a fair amount on matchdays, I see no problem with it.

I don’t know why you’d pay four pound to drink a can of carling out of a horse box when you’ve got a pub 200 yards away, but to each their own

agreed Dave, agreed.

However it was requested so you can't blame the club for giving it a go.

obviously a tunnel to the CGH is the proper solution

You can get a drink at half time which is a good thing. Probably will help boost the atmosphere from the people whose blood alcohol levels are dwindling…

Make the redeveloped Town End so big that it incorporates the CGH?

Because if you are in the pub then you won't be at the game, you cant go out and get a beer in the pub and get back into the ground, its not rocket surgery.

People inside the ground want a beer, the club are providing them with that.

Reed and Williams are under contact next season - Rob Angus.

The Adver Sports Desk just tweeted that Jonny Williams and Louis Reed are 2 of 14 players whose contracts run out in the summer.

Which obviously is the complete opposite of what Rob Angus told you.  :hmmm:

As a bastion of top class local journalism? Doubtful. Perhaps Quagmire/Rob Angus had consumed too much Carling, or other such substances from the Town End Horsebox.  :hmmm:

Don't they have to be out of contract as we were unable to offer anything beyond 1 yr contracts when the signed last summer? That's not to say that they haven't signed extensions ala McKirdy etc and just not been announced yet?

Did anyone see if the townend bar was busy? Rob Angus said they have to see if it is cost effective. I can imagine they did fairly brisk trade.
