Title: Town fans in East Berks
Post by: Maidenhead Red on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, 12:34:24
I've always wondered how many Town fans are situated in East Berks. Living in Maidenhead, I know of one other based here on his posts on Twitter (Loose Goose, no idea if he's on here?) I don't know him personally though

Are there other Town fans in the Maidenhead/Windsor/Slough area?

Now that my daughter is a bit older, I'm going to try and get to a few more games on a Saturday. I'd usually go with my old man, who lived in Swindon, but he's recently moved to just outside Hereford, so won't be going as much

Would be good to meet other Town fans around these parts. I'm sure there has to more than two of us

Any Berkshire Town fans I know or have met have always been this side of Reading. Quite a few from Hungerford and a couple in Newbury.

I'm in Reading so on the West Berks side technically, but not a million miles away. I know there's a fair few Swindon fans in this area! I've seen a few Town shirts (and flags) around Tilehurst.

I bought a 2nd hand monitor for the wifes PC last week down here in Chard, the oldish lady I got it from saw the Swindon Town sticker in my car and said "Oh me and my husband come from Swindon originally and are both Swindon fans!".

Those fuckers are everywhere!

Is it an unofficial Garner out sticker?

Interesting. I would imagine there has to be a few fans this way. Perhaps from moving closer to London for work etc...

Maybe they're here, but not on the TEF... Would be good to represent STFC more in this area among all of the Spurs/Chels/QPR and the odd Wycombe fan that I know

Is there anything particularly odd about the Wycombe fan that you know?

I live in Earley, used to work in Maidenhead until 2020, but now based in Slough (though have hardly been there in the past two years for obvious reasons!)

Ha! I wondered if I’d get a response like this after re reading how I worded that. He’s actually a lovely bloke, just an odd choice of football team he supports 😂

At least you’re the Maidenhead side of Reading, so getting closer 😄

I have friends who live around the Earley/Winnersh/Woodley area. The cinema in Winnersh is great from what I remember

I work in Winnersh Triangle opposite the cinema and yes it is still awesome. Expensive though, and those lazy boy chairs make me wanna sleep!

Been pub crawling in Theale a few times and never came across any Town support! Would be good to know of some Town fans in the area.

Hi Maidenhead Red, I live in Windsor and have supported Town for over 50 years. I used to go a lot more often when my son lived at home. He now lives in Hertfordshire and is also a Town fan. He has never lived in Wiltshire and when someone asked him recently why he supported Swindon he said it’s in the genes. On hearing this I was proud to know I had brought him up correctly. 😀

It's great reading stories of Town fans living outside Wiltshire. Once it's in your blood it stays there forever.

I do not live in Berkshire anymore but a couple of years ago before I moved I knew 5 Swindon fans around the Walthams and at least 8 in Wokingham.

Used to live in West Berks/North Hampshire border but Berkshire is such a small county that you're never more than 8 miles from a Reading (or even worse Chelsea) fan when there  :D

Basingstoke was mostly Southampton shirts when I lived there. Until Reading went up that is...

Maybe it'll go full circle

I always thought that Basingstoke was like a more run down/dirtier/rougher smaller version of Swindon every time I have visited it.

Always assumed the same, whilst I have changed trains there on numerous occasions I have never set foot outside the station, exactly the same with Derby (always assumed it was a dump changed trains there 10's of times but never left the station (And Coventry in fact!))!

Basingstoke is a weird place in some respects. It's kind of the epitome of a nodnoL overspill and commuter Town. Everything is purely for purpose. Like this is where the people live, this where the shops are and this is where the entertainment is. Three very separate chunks and no real merging of anything; especially concerning house to shops. I suppose they tried to create some kind of communal village up near the Hospital but ironically it just feels rather sterile and lacking any true character.

I suppose the same could be said of many Towns but Basingstoke definitely stuck out as quite starkly one of those places with "not much in between". In contrast Newbury at least has some history :)

Up until 2002 it was an absolute shithole of a town centre. Worse than Swindon.  So they knocked a lot of it down, built Festival Place shopping centre, a cinema and some restaurants and while its no doubt suffering like anywhere its miles better than Swindon centre.

Outside the town its much like any newer town really, some good bits, some shit bits and some out of town shopping. And like Swindon a short drive to some nice places in the countryside.

Its places like Aldershot you have got to worry about.

It's not that bad nowadays. Quite similar to Swindon still only the Town Centre is fairly modern. I got married just outside B'stoke, nice countryside around it (also similar to the don)

TBF I am basing my views on going there around 2010 and it was like a bomb had been dropped in certain places of the town centre while there was development going on but what was left was an absolute eyesore, I had a few programming courses in the centre and it was rough. Now though, I only go through on the train when going to London.

Last time I went through it in a car I was visiting Silchester Roman site and that was about 8 years ago, I didn't stop in Basingstoke....

Hi Tails. We used to dominate North Street in Theale / Englefield with 100% of the footy fans in the street (2) but one of us has now moved to Silchester. Both season ticket holders.
