Title: STFC vs Walsall MoM
Post by: Red Frog on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, 21:36:32
Well what can you say? For 15 minutes either side of half-time, we were as close to unplayable as at any time since the Wellens era. Wonderful to see what these boys can do when they're given free rein, and more than half this side hadn't started a game for us before the New Year. What a great night, in front of a great crowd.

 :beers:

Aguiar for me. Difficult one where every single one of them were superb.

Tomlinson for me. Constant link between defence and attack. Turning out to be a great signing.Davison,Aguiar and Barry close behind

Davidson for me. Lead the line really well and managed to retain possession when the ball was pumped up to him.   Something I didn’t really see a lot of when Simpson lead the line.

Barry grew into the game after a shaky start and Agular took both his goals well.

Very difficult one to pick a MotM.

Difficult for Davison and Aguiar to better his weekend performances but they did.

Barry was also very good, but I think he faded a bit towards the end.

The defence was very solid with Cooper and O'Brien being rock solid. Hunt, who is Mr Unspectacularly Consistent, upped his performance too.

I think I'll hand it to Davison. I think he work rate off the ball was awesome. He held the ball up well and brought others into play.

Everyone could have had a shout at that tonight.
Excellent team performance.
Must get Reed on a longer contract.

Hard call to make but I went for Davison. I was surprised that a few got on his back so quickly when he admittedly had a couple of reasonably poor games. I thought it was pretty evident what his game was after his debut and that with fitness and hopefully confidence he would improve. Never going to be that clinical but as part of that three a few would even go in off his arse.

I'm gonna go for Reed purely because he absolutely ran that midfield yet again.

I think the only player off the boil was McKirdy. Not a criticism, he just didn’t get into the game all that much and was probably a 6/10. Everyone has those days.

Plenty of contenders. Aguiar with two excellent finishes, Barry causing no end of problems, Davison leading the line, Reed pulling the strings as always, Tomlinson and Hunt getting forward at every opportunity… I think I’ll go for Barry with Aguiar a close second. If he can keep this form up he’ll be a great addition to the squad.

Went for Davison, relished the physical battle and didn't stop running.

A mention for JOB & Cooper as well, very solid, won the headers and battled well against their giants.

One or two stray passes from Iandolo in the first half but good to see the picture of innocence after getting a couple of digs in.

Overall the whole team coped very well with the challenge against a much bigger side.

Barry for me but easily could easily be Aguiar or Davison.

Reed, Cooper, JOB, Jojo, Tomplinson all had solid games.

A good all round performance by all, even though McKirdy had one of his poorer games he was still all over the pitch chasing things but just not getting anywhere much in and around the box which is where he is deadliest.

Has to be Aguiar for me, just for the massive step up and the way he is plying like he has played at this level for a bit. Looking at his Wiki he never even went through the yoofs at a league club.

In a different way could all be a bit Austinesque, albeit hope no one public makes that sort of statement for the pressure that could follow.

Feel bad for overriding so many exceptionally good claims.

On a night where our superior skill and speed of thought and play slaughtered 'em, I'm choosing the muscularity and non stop running of Davison for helping open them up and allowing Garner to incorporate a more direct style.

Walsall had worryingly looked bigger, more physical and awkward "early doors"

Also JOB looks a complete centre back and won every header all night long.

Same - Ran the show once again.
Put in some tackles.

Reminded me of Ray McHale.

He does, similar height and build and controls games.

Same as when played wide right McKirdy reminds me of Bobby Barnes, shin pads low and socks down, feet moving way faster than he is actually running, tricky feet taking him past players but also knows exactly where the goal is.

Barry for me, first time I have seen him in the flesh and his touch and close control are superb.  Aguilar, Tomilinson and Reed a very close second..

Met with Aguilar after the game as I was in Hospitality - close up he looks like a school kid, doesn't even look the 20 year old that he is.  Looks completely different on the pitch than face to face - fair play to the lad for grabbing his opportunity - got a big future if he continues at this rate.

Made me feel really old this little fucker.

To see what I mean about Bobby Barnes watch this from 51 mins in to see the typical McKirdy finish from Barnes.

I went for Davison, who I admittedly wrote off after the tranmere game. Him and reed were integral to our play. Barry and Aguir also excellent

Went for Davison.
There is something about him, saw it at Colchester and he just keeps going. Jumps for and wins headers, sensible play bringing others in. If he had scored last night he would have been streets ahead in the voting in my opinion.
The link up play between them all down the left 2nd half was brilliant to watch and what was good was when Walsall started to try and leave a boot in it came right back at them. No punches pulled fucking brilliant commitment throughout making it a great game to witness.
Over 9500 home fans on a Tuesday is remarkable. Fucking love town!!

Can't decide who to give it to. Totally agree about Davison though. He does the things I expect a number 9 to do and he does them well. He was instrumental in the first two goals in a way that I don't believe Simpson would have been. Without those goals it would have been a completely different game...

I went for Aguiar. 2 goals and an all round good performance. High marks also for Barry, Reed (Mr Consistency) Tomlinson and Davison. (who has proved me wrong)

One of those games where nobody really did anything wrong.

I went for Reed as to my view he is a ball winner and gets involved all over the midfield which is always the sort of player that supporters take to.
