Title: Players Collapsing
Post by: Quagmire on Thursday, November 25, 2021, 14:59:05
I see Charlie Wyke of Wigan collapsed during training earlier in the week and John Fleck did during the game for Sheffield United on Tuesday night.
Obviously with Sergio Agüero and Christian Eriksen happening over the last few months too, is it becoming more of a regular occurrence or are we just hearing about it more.

What do we think is causing it, if it is happening more?
I don’t for a second think it’s vaccine related, but wouldn’t be surprised if it was Covid related with it having an affect on the body many doctors and scientist’s still don’t understand

Think we’re just hearing about it more, when you look back there have been quite a lot of incidents such as Muamba or deaths like Foe and Astori.

Think we’re just hearing about it more, when you look back there have been quite a lot of incidents such as Muamba or deaths like Foe and Astori.

Those 3 incidents were in 2003 (Foe), 2012 (Muamba) and 2018. (Astori) That said there are other incidents which I was unaware of - https://www.straitstimes.com/sport/football/football-players-who-have-collapsed-on-the-pitch

The 4 incidents that Quagmire named were across a period of about 1 year or so. There was also an incident in Norway this month, a footballer called Emil Palsson collapsed.

I think the issue could potentially be a mixture of the two. Yes we are hearing about more incidents globally, but at the same time these athletes are being pushed and pushed and pushed to the limits of their abilities. Obviously you weigh in undetected health issues as well.

There is an article in the Athletic about it here. (behind a paywall unfortunately)

Not just football, happened to a few young cyclists over the last couple of years. I think sports science is helping people push further, but also sets off things that previously might have been avoided.

The 4 I mentioned have been since June, so in a very short space of time.

They were just examples, there’s many more. Iker Casillas retired after having a heart attack for Porto in 2019, Daly Blind has got a pace maker, Sami Kheidira had an abnormal heart rhythm at Juventus and these are just top level so stands to reason there’s many more down the leagues that either haven’t got coverage.

Yeah - I edited my original post that you quoted when I did a bit more research historically. You are right, there are more incidents however 5 in 5 months does seem a lot.

Olivia Podmore's death is presently suspected to be suicide.....

And no idea who 'Gianni' cyclist (no.45) is?

All I know is that Germany have reported a lot of deaths of young athletes post vaccination. I’ve had mine, I’m not dead, I’ve not been running nor tested myself yet. Apprehensive though.

Be interesting to see the pre-vaccine results for balance

Just as likely to be pollution. Or perhaps steroids fed to animals that we eat. Or perhaps performance enhancing drugs. Or undetected heart conditions. Or due to smoking. Or poor nutrition. Or perhaps alcohol. Maybe it is due to allergies. Or change in diet. Maybe the Russians have spread Novochok more widely than we thought.

What I'm trying to say is that one shouldn't jump to conclusions. But if you do, please be careful about stating it as 'fact' on the internet to impressionable imbeciles who believe the most weird and wonderful things.

As noted above I would be more convinced if in the sport I know a bit about, one wasn't pretty widely thought to be suicide and the other unknown by me or it would appear google.

Not saying it doesn't need looking at, but in cyclists this predates covid or any vaccination programme.

If reputable.

This looks like the kind of fear mongering bollocks that makes my clinical colleagues fucking furious. Especially those working in our ICUs where currently  every bed has an unvaccinated person who's been dumb enough to believable shite in it.

This is presented like it's a list of athletes that have died after vaccination. Five minutes of googling tells you that's not the case. It's just a list of relatively young people that have died in the last year. Which sadly they do every year.

Just looking at the first two or three tells you someone is loading this list with deaths that do not fit this context at all. Jalen Leavey wasn't a footballer, he was a 19 year old community college student and member of their marching band. Neither was his death an unexplained shock following vaccination. He died of a long term pre-existing illness.

Please can I beg people not to listen to the ill informed on twitter. There's a lot of people out there that don't seem to care the lives they risk to look like a smartarse.

Darin awards are going to be swamped with candidates this year and next for that matter.

Whilst pretty rare, there's always been a death every now and again from undiagnosed heart conditions or other health stuff hasn't there?

The level of athleticism in the game now is so much higher than it was 25 years ago - your gazzas and mersons and le tissiers would be fucked now. No sweating  off your hangover in bin bags in the top flight.

Also with the internet you get to know about it. I wouldn't have known about a French youth player or a German 3rd div lad dropping dead in the early 2000s.

Correlation isn't causation . And an increased data pool doesn't mean an increase in events.

Or something.

I see that Brentford are close to offering Eriksen a six month contract, surely nobody could have imagined that in the aftermath of the Euros
