Title: Oldham tickets
Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Thursday, October 21, 2021, 06:27:27
Are these actually on sale yet?

When I go on line, you can select that game to buy tickets but when you do that, it just says, "no seats available matching your criteria"....is this is computer glitchy, clear your cache, log in/log out kind of thing or are they just not on sale yet? I would have thought they would be. Anyone know?

Yes they are.
You need to log onto the website and log onto the ticket page.
Select the number of tickets with the drop down box then add to basket etc.

10am this morning for non season ticket holders.
Plenty to go around 👍

Hope so mate and driving to this one.

Took a massive punt last night and booked the trains to Barrow in December.

curious about this trip.
when i look at google, it says it is about a 4.5hr drive and 4.5hr train ride.
how much does the train cost to take on a trip like this?  is the train somewhat comfortable? does it have things like plug-ins for computers and things?  Any sort of food car?
would a trip like this be an over-night event for most people or do you ride the train back after the game?

For the train Swindon to Manchester if not bought way in advance and with no railcards will cost about £150 for a return trip to Manchester then you have to go on local trams to get to Oldham as it doesnt have a railway station any more for another £5 return approx.

If booked way in advance it can be a fair bit cheaper (up to 50%) but then you run the risk of not getting a ticket if its limited.

The trains are fairly good and all have plugs for charging now, several have on board catering but many just have a drinks and snacks trolley now since covid.

I think you are referring to the trip to Barrow which is indeed a 4 hour journey.
All about buying tickets early, planning tickets from different rail operators and playing the system with railcards.
If you don’t do this the cost is unreal.

3 long rail journeys for me and my 2 lads this year.
Barrow, Carlisle and Hartlepool.
The rest some long trips in the car, Exeter, Tranmere and Harrogate.
Still a 120 mile round trip to each home game which is a pain but all part of the deal unfortunately.

Back to Barrow travelling with 3 train operators:
Banbury to Wolverhampton - Cross Country
Wolverhampton to Lancaster - Avanti West Coast
Lancaster to Barrow - Northern Line

Cost was £240 but got it down to £110

It’s a very long day but clearly the advantage by train is a few beers and quality time to relax.
Disadvantage it only takes one problem and you can get stranded for the night in a Northern outpost.

I’ve thumbed lifts and jumped on Mail trains over the years - Goes with the territory.

Tried doing a pub crawl with a few mates down Manchester Road, Oldham,  absolutely impossible, seemed like every other building was a pub.   Wilson's mild was the 'then' drink.   :pint: :pint:

Don't be expecting to relax on the Lancaster - Barrow bit albeit you will be going the right way each time.

"If booked way in advance it can be a fair bit cheaper (up to 50%) but then you run the risk of not getting a ticket if its limited."

so you may not get a ticket if you buy it early?? that seems backwards...I am surprised by the cost.  I thought the train system would be cheaper, seems like a lot if i am understanding it would cost upwards of a $250 american.

so i looked it up and it is 174 miles from swindon to oldham uk.  so first why the hell does it take 4.5 hr to get there...you all have your grandmas drive you?  at 60mph that is only 3 hrs.  and even at $9 a gallon, it is probably still cheaper to drive isnt it if we assume you get 30 miles per gallon? most everyone in the Uk have smaller cars correct?

since oldham seems close to Manchester...totally off the subject question....

did anyone on here have the opportunity to go to the hacienda in the early 80's when bands like New Order and Blue Mondays were starting up there?   Not sure of ages of everyone in the group  ;D

New Order is a dream band for me.  had tickets to a show last year in chicago then fucking covid screwed it and all the make up dates are not ones i can make unless I fly to LA.   They dont tour the US very often so if i want to see them i may have to just spend the money or spend money going to the UK to see them.

I was a student in Manchester at the time, and went to New Order's gig opening the venue in 1983.  :toocool:

I was due to see Peter Hook and The Light in Paris again last spring, but it's been indefinitely postponed.

unfortunately not

But I've seen them a couple of times since reformation, once with Hooky, once without. And also Peter Hook and the light.

Maybe I'm stuck in my ways, bit I prefer the earlier Joy Division/New Order sounds than their latest stuff. I think for me anything post Republic was hit and miss

This. Which seems to be the furrow that Pete is ploughing, hence my preference for him rather than Bernie and his electro kids.

Couldn't agree more. The ticket was a bargain too, they played 2 entire JD albums and it was about £15!

That IS Peter Hook and the light. Much more raw/older sounding than NO and their 24 keyboardists it whatever it was the other tour.

A proper gig rather than a show.

But  NO are still worth watching

Car journeys in the UK can take a lot longer than the equivalent in the USA (distance).  65+ million people living in a State the size of Florida, inter City driving can be pretty busy.  Imagine an entire State looking like the roads of LA & Manhattan.

Trains - much better than Amtrak for longer distances.  Commuter/local trains can be atrocious versions of the NY Subway over ground essentially.  Usually, to these smaller clubs, you would need to mix the two services.  On the plus side, every Town has them, pretty much, unlike the USA where rail travel stopped progressing in 1910, or somewhere around then.

Absolutely, It has at times taken me 8 hours to drive to Manchester for what is in essence a 4 hour drive due to our motorways being overloaded.

I will have to look and see if Peter Hook comes to America.  I do like the dance sound from the early NO sound.  But also like the joy division sound.

it would  be nice to have more trains here....i have taken a train once from st louis to chicago...it was horrible...stopped every 15 miles...it took hours to get there whereas driving would take less than 2.

I hear you about the driving...i live in the midwest where literally it is a straight line for 300 miles basically and no trees for the police to hide

when i listen to the BBC wiltshire every morning, they are always talking about road issues which always surprises me since it is like 11am - noon there, so I keep thinking, why is there so much traffic??

Title: Re: Oldham tickets

Because the road system here in the UK is nothing like the interstate. In the USA you can literally drive in a straight line for 3 hours at 60mph and have travelled 180 miles. My cousin lives in Phoenix and thinks absolutely nothing of jumping in the car and driving 30 miles to the other side of town. In the UK travelling 30 miles is almost like a day out.

A quick drive to Gloucester takes about half an hour. Doesn’t feel like a day out to me? A trip to Scotland on the other hand…

The road network is based on the medieval field feudal system, the motorway network not so. As has been said nearly 70 million people squeezed into a smallish US state (take your pick) add in the feudal road network and subtract the areas of little occupancy (yes we have them) and you condense the remaining road network and occupancy into an even smaller network. When one thinks about it it is or can be considered a miracle anything move anywhere at anytime.

I was originally referring to Barrow mate.
Oldham in comparison is a doddle.
Couple of hours in a car for me, by train no real problem but it’s a tram ride out from central Manchester.
Good fans are Oldham and the women when I was a single lad were always up for it on holidays :)
Rochdale lasses even worse :)

so what are the opinions out there about if it is rainy, how does that affect a team that likes to possess the ball...when the ball gets slick it is a bit harder to keep it under control...i would hate to see them lose possession in our defensive 1/3 instead of just clearing it.

It's not that high up but is the highest.

Oldham is cold though, as is Grimsby, especially with a north easterly wind from the north sea coming straight at the away end.
