Title: Swindon West Ham 1967 FA Cup video

There's this person on youtube who keeps posting rare footage of old football matches, where he gets it all from who knows.

Anyhow, he's recently put up 20+ minutes footage of the Swindon West Ham FA Cup replay at the County Ground in 1967 (which Swindon won 3-1).

When i previewed this post, it comes up saying video unavailable, but if you click the watch on youtube link it should work on there.

Really enjoyed that, what a noise from the crowd.
I went to the game at Upton Park, could not make the replay, not sure I've seen those highlights before.
Great stuff.

3 World Cup winners on the losing side.  Some spirit.  The seeds of 69.

Nostalgia on stilts!

Thanks Bedford.

I watched my first games in that season.
Whilst we didn’t go to the away game, if I recall correctly we drew 3-3 in the away game, conceding a late equaliser.
Cup run ended in a 5th round second replay at Villa Park against Nottingham Forest who were 2nd in the then 1st division at the time.

My Dad took me to Upton Park on the Saturday and then to the replay on the Tuesday night. I was nine at the time.
Starting the dream of thinking everything in life is possible. Roy of the Rovers stuff.
Thank you for sharing this video.

I had gone to Upton Park on the Saturday - about a hundred of us had taken up residence behind the goal, little did we know that was the favourite place of the local hard nuts who were not best pleased to see us!  Having "persuaded" us to move it did all settle down a little!  The replay was manic, was in the Town End and it was one almighty crush but we sung our hearts out that night.  After the game we went into the  supporters club which was in fact a large portacabin-type building in the car park.  The singing continued and to our surprise some of the players came in accompanied by Kenneth Wolstenholme who signed our programmes.  Great night!

I was at both games. Went to Upton Park with my Dad and a mate of his and a school pal of mine. My pal and I got sent down to the front of the stand at Upton Park so that we would be able to see but that meant we lost contact until after the game. We met back up again after the game in the queue for the tube station, which was quite something given the length of the queue!

My Dad and I also went to the Round 1 game at Horsham that season.

How could anyone expect The Academy to perform on that surface !

Don Rogers, what a player, struck me in that clip how two-footed he was, switching flanks, must have been a nightmare to defend.

Remember watching the highlights on Sportsnight.

Interesting to see some of the background stuff watching that
1. The pitch side benches - from memory these were accessed from the front of the old main stand (where the Arkells is now).
The terrace on that side was separate from the other 3 sides (called The enclosure I think) and you could upgrade from standing to a pitch side bench seat for an extra payment.
2. The letters in front of the terrace in the corners - these were showing for half time scores in other games. There was a “key of the board” table in the programme telling you what game each letter stood for, and shortly after half time a man would come out and put the numbers up.
3. The vendor walking round the pitch with a tray of sweets or nuts. I recall there also used to be one with a tea urn on his back.
4. The heavy pitch - it was generally worse at the Town End - it used to slope that way slightly. Makes you realise how good the groundsman is now.

Watching a game was a very different experience in the 1960s.

A year before my first game. We used to be a great cup team over the years. Just sort of fizzled out.

Even if you beat a ‘bigger’ club now there’s less kudos in doing so as they treat it as we do the Pizza.

Be interesting to see how our style would get on against, say, a middling Championship side - like Bristol City.

Strangely, my favourite cup day out in the last 25 years or so was the 5-0 thrashing we got at Newcastle. That was an epic day!

Edit. Just checked. It was 33 years ago! Gazza scored! Christ, where has the time gone.

Yes, if you stood down the front you stood a chance of getting a cup of tea from the guy in the white lab coat with the urn strapped on his back, but you could also get scolded as cups got passed over people's heads from the front to those stood further back! There was also often a half-time collection for the St Johns Ambulance people. They used to walk round the pitch perimeter holding a big sheet which people threw (often hurled) coins into, usually missing the sheet and hitting the collectors! No Health and Safety provisions in those days!  :D

This video was a great surprise! Thanks Bedford!

I was stood at the back of the Townend for that game and just two memories remain: being right behind the screamer from John Sissons and the scrambled goal by Ken Skeen just before the end. I hadn't remembered what a state the pitch was in.

I remember the first game better. A real classic cup-tie with a hatrick from Geoff Hurst against one for Dennis Brown and two from the Don. I'd certainly like to see a video of that game!

I could well have been in the same group as Ronnie21 at Upton Park. Me and my mates were also "persuaded" to let the West Ham fans stand in their usual spaces.

I had gone up early on the train with around 10 friends and we were queuing outside the ground before the gates were opened. A reasonably well-known Swindon fan at that time (Mervyn B....) walked along the queue asking who was going to win. One of my mates (a trainee chef named Paddy) answered West Ham. Big Mervyn playfully grabbed Paddy's scarf at his throat and said: "funny guy eh?" Paddy wasn't the sort of bloke to do that to and he punched Mervyn hard enough to knock him down. Unluckily his head hit the ground and he had to be carted off unconscious in an ambulance...

Of the 10 of us only one avoided any sort of violence. He (Kevin Bond, brother of well known local Swindon DJ Leo) was wearing similar colours to West Ham.

We managed to get on the Tube after the game but before the doors closed a group of West Ham fans got on and threw a few punches before a woman passenger set about them with her hand-bag :-) and they retreated off the train. My mate Fred (another trainee chef :-)) was dragged off the train but was rescued by a large W H fan and pushed back on.
No serious damage but memorable.

Ditto what NotHarryAgombar and Private Fraser wrote. I think the guy with the tea urn also sold Bovril. My dad used to buy tea from him in the late fifties/early sixties. I was one of the young kids then (probably all boys), standing "on the boards" by the Stratton Bank goal.

Off topic, my Uncle Edgar's ashes were spread in that goalmouth...
