Anybody else keeping an eye on this girl? She did great at Wimbledon, but then there have been plenty that have without backing it up. She's done so immediately, aiming for the semi's tomorrow at Flushing Meadows having dominated everybody she has faced at the US. She's very young and obviously has a lot to learn, but I don't remember being this excited even by Andy Murray at the same stage in their careers. Quite excited by the prospect of a new Brit to get behind now that Murray has faded

It’s incredible really, she’s come out of nowhere pretty much. Lots of the British players reach the top 200/300s and then don’t progress much further. Her ranking will rocket after this slam for sure - she’s barely dropped a game let alone sets!

The state of women’s game is so different to the men’s, far more open and unpredictable (checks to see if Novak is still in the competition)

The only caveat is that you often get young women players who have a hot spell of a year or 2 where they look like the next Serena or Graff, only to fade away to averageness

I was thinking more like the past 5 years or so there has teenagers like Kenin, Andrescu, Ostenpenko (yes I wiki’d those cos no chance I remembered their names) who won a grand slam as a teenager and haven’t pushed on from that.

Great stuff and with these two, it feels a little different to previous Grand Slam Finalists in the women's game. I think we will see these two (in the bare minimum) in semi-finals or better for a little while. Women's elite tennis might just be about to get its Graf/Hingis/Williams/ type era again.

Great to see. What an achievement for both players. I was picking my nose whilst watching it thinking "Raducanu is 18 and has won a Grand Slam" and "Fernandez is 19 and in the final"...I continued picking my nose - it was quite a cathartic moment.

I’m so happy right now. Sport does this. I’ve never met the girl and never will, but I feel so proud right now. She’s a legend at 18. How many could say the same? Very few I warrant.

I confess, I didn't watch the match as the intricacies of tennis elude me somewhat. However, it is clear that this is a special achievement and Emma Raducanu is an immense talent.

I had a look at the HYS comments on the BBC website as they always offer a thoughtful and well balanced analysis of world news and sporting events. Sadly, it appears that most if the bandwidth was taken up by commentary on what constitutes 'Britishness'.  Quite sad really.

You really didn't need to know anything about the intricacies of tennis to enjoy that match. A complete layman (as I am in tennis terms, I know the scoring system and that's about it) could have appreciated the amazing shots both players made, the grit, determination, will to win and simple, fundamental fact that they were hitting the ball as hard as fuck.

But to your point, it is indeed very sad that her Britishness is even up for debate. The way the world is these days, a lot more factors come in to play than parents' nationality and place of birth. It's really not that black and white. There is no doubt in my mind certainly about her 'Britishness'...

I think we forget how blindingly unlikely Leicester winning the Prem was, simply because they've been quite competent but not the same level since, but that is the high water mark for incredible runs in recent years.

That she did that without losing a set in any game, and only going to 7 games in a set once, is frankly a bit bonkers.

Not a tennis fan (will go back to ignoring it completely again now), but the achievement and the way it’s been achieved genuinely seems like one of the all time sporting moments. And all that by an 18 year old, who played her first professional tournament in July

Still buzzing. I really only got into tennis because of Andy Murray and while a few have flattered to deceive over this era, we’ve not really had anybody who could realistically match his talent until now. Really looking forward to getting behind Raducanu while her career progresses now.

Because it's no longer true. It was for a fair while in the 90s/00s, but every single one of the 18 players who played in the test series v India that just finished were born in England.
