Title: Drones, model planes and kites
Post by: 4D on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, 08:35:35
Been thinking about getting something aerial, I used to love kite flying as a kid. Obviously drones weren't about and we couldn't afford a plane back in the day, apart from a balsa wood one with a rubber band  :)

Any hobbyists here?

I used to have an RC glider many moons ago. Went to Lydiard hill or Box hill and launched it by throwing it. Was great fun.

I also keep on meaning to get some airfix models but the paints and stuff aren't easy to come by out here.

Not a hobbyist, but if I was thinking of getting something like a drone, I would head out to dcrainmaker.com to have a look at what he has reviewed. He's really good at looking at comparing stuff thats out there.

I can't see any second hand ones for sale and probably wouldn't buy one unless it was from someone you knew. Cheapest brand new I've see is £419 from Argos & Currys bu to haven't checked Amazon.

Looks like a plan 4d, as you no doubt know it seems to come in under 250g.

I built a six foot wingspan glider many years ago, but on the first trials launching at 20 feet I didn't bother with a dethermaliser and didn't have my details written on it. The glider proceeded to circle the park getting higher and higher, until it went out of sight probably towards Highworth. I never got it back, and when I rang the cop shop about it they got angry, thinking it was a leg-pull, wasting police time.soapy tit wank.

I used to make loads of Airfix and Tamiya stuff as a kid, then when I had a bit of time on my hands a few years back, built a T28. Fairly happy with the result, but would have got a smoother finish with an airbrush.

I used to love making Airfix, Revell, Kitmaster and Tamiya kits, never took one to the sky though after building, I prefer land based models though.

Got myself a DJI Mavic mini drone, with the extra batteries etc. Looking forward to trying it out this weekend  :)
Might have to contact STFC to see if they'd allow me to fly around the CG  :D

Use it to spy on the neighbours sun bathing in their garden?

Well, this is absolutely ridiculous. I cannot find an app that works from the play store to connect my phone. It says to use DJI GO but that doesn't list the Mavic Mini, online it mentions DJI FLY APP, which doesn't appear to be in Play store. FFS.  :crash:

Apparently I need to register an operator ID with the CAA  :plane:

My drone weighs 249g and has a camera. I would suggest it is not classed as a toy, so according to this I have to register an operator ID but not a flyer ID

https://register-drones.caa.co.uk/registration-requirements-for-drones

Then I read this, which suggests an Operator ID is for the person who owns the drone, and flyer ID is for the person who flys it.

https://register-drones.caa.co.uk/individual

I don't get it?  ??? Firstly, the class/weight suggests I don't need a flyer ID.

I'm just going to get an Operator ID.   :crash:

My colleague has had issues connecting my drone to his samsung. Have you an ipad or iphone to connect it to?

I bought a dji phantom pro must be 6/7 years ago now. Then a mavic mini 3 years ago.

The phantom is a big boy with a 2 mile range and can handle high wind. The mavic struggles compares to that but its so tiny its fantastic and I get the most use out of that.

One thing I haven't set up yet is the facial recognition where it will follow you wherever you walk/run/ cycle etc.

Overall the technology is brilliant, anti-crash features, automatic fly back when battery low etc and the picture quality is insane- enjoy it!
