Title: Turkey v Italy
Post by: Sippo on Friday, June 11, 2021, 08:11:56
Think the Italians will win this. Bring on the soccer.

Italy haven't conceded in 8 games.

I've a soft spot for Turkey having been over there a few times and so I really hope that they have a good tournament. Italy are a strong side and should win.

I fancy a good entertaining opening game. I'll go 2-1 Italy.

Really looking forward to this. The first match in a major tournament is always a special moment; even if the matches sometimes fail to live up to the hype. I think Italy will have too much for Turkey. 2-1 to the Azzurri.

I think Turkey look pretty decent, but maybe this isn't the game to show that in. Still, opening games often have surprising results - I'll go for 1-1 with the Turks taking the lead.

I fancy Italy to go very deep - some value there too.

I’m expecting Italy, along with Portugal, to be the ones who will be waiting to pounce should France somehow fail to win the whole thing

They don’t have the household names they used to but Italy have a very good side these days, Turkey are no mugs though so expecting a close, probably not exciting, opener tonight

Mancini might also be the best tactical manager at any of the big sides - not a high bar but still.

Score first, then park the bus. It works, but will it against bigger sides?

Italy have to be a good outside bet.

Germany don't appear to have much about them but you just know they will be a well oiled machine without anymore flair and hard to beat

I only realised yesterday all Germany's games are in Munich. I thought they'd really struggle but now im not so sure. That group is horrible!

Im sticking a tenner on Italy. Brilliant tournament nation. Chiesa is one to watch for them.

That said im backing the draw tonight, 1-1. Turkey will relish the task of playing in Rome on opening night i think.

Cheers Hans as I'm not up on the squad this time around. Another team under the radar is Spain who you can never write off.

I have this feeling (and it is only a feeling) that this tournament is going to have a "surprise" finalist; a team like Russia or Turkey.

Not necessarily win it, a la Greece in 2004 (Greece in 2004!) but still a surprise and a great tournament for a team that might be expected to dip out in the group stage.

Come on North Macedonia!

I have barely kept in touch with much football outside of STFC over the past few years but reading through the pre-amble Italy under Mancini are setup to be very attacking so are unlikely to be as dour as in previous tournaments.

As for the whole thing, I think the usual names like Spain and Germany are in decline and I think Belgium are probably never going to hit that height with their aging players. I watched France take Bulgaria apart at a partisan Stade De France and they looked excellent, fast, fit, strong, they will take some beating.

I just want England not to lose to Scotland and i'll be happy!

Turkey might do well this tournament, they've got the youngest squad and they've only lost one of their last 12 matches, and have beaten Netherlands, Russia and drew with Germany in the process.

A cagey opener, but Italy look good and have home advantage playing all three of their qualifiers in Rome. They will win the group and edge this game 2-1.

It's a year too late for Belgium. Hazard is dead. The back 4 are old and slow. Spain and Germany in a weird phase too, like you say.

It's the frogs to lose (Toulouse?), but Italy represent more value in the market for sure.

I still reckon Belgium will do quite well again. A bit like England (even though they have a younger squad than Belgique now) in that they'll both probably end up being the bridesmaids rather than the bride.

In other news, I have for some reason put a free £5 on Dries Mertens as Top Goalscorer. I think I meant to select Lukaku but fuck it, Mertens seemingly was 110/1 seems very generous especially each way to 4 places. Reckon they'll spank Finland *wanders off thinking about Belgium to win v Fin and Mertens to score a hattrick*

The only trouble is, his teammate is Lukaku but they've both had cracking seasons. One of them will carry that into the tournament and considering the group they are in, I expect them to rack up some goals early on. They are both "getting on" in footy terms though and PP words ring true in that for many of the Belgium side, it's a year too early. Mind you, if De Bruyne somehow becomes fit enough, you can't fully rule them out.

Opinions - like arseholes - nearly all of us have one :)

I've taken advantage of the 'offer' that Paddy Power have whereby if you put £10 on a top scorer bet, they will give you £1 bets for every shot on target that they have during the tournament. I've gone £5 EW on Griezmann at 22/1, I know he isn't their 'marksman' but he is a busy player and think should reward me with plenty of shots on targets as well as goals.

I think Italy will go very deep, there main concern being two old as fuck centre backs

Portugal look like they have a stacked squad too, but again reliant on some creaky centre backs. It looks like Frances to lose, but there’s already some rumblings of discontent from mbappe, and heaven knows they love an implosion

Can see England coming second in the group then losing to one of France/Germany/Portugal in the second round. Scotland could squeak through as one of the best placed third teams. Wales will be akin to Ireland in 2012 I fear

If we come second in the group, we play second in ESP, SWE, POL, SVK group.

Winning the group is the problem!

I have done the same with Sky Bet and Lukaku, I get a £3 free bet for every goal he scores

Ahh I think that's what I've done as it mentioned the whole £1 for shots on target bets. Similarly, when Mertens isn't feeling so generous in assisting Lukaku, he does enjoy a good cut in from the flank and a shot from outside/edge of the box.

Good call on Greasyman :) I think the only think that put me off with French, German or Portuguese players is down to them probably having tighter games, being in the same group. After that though, yep I can see those players (if their team has got through) doing pretty well as usual.

I'm a bit torn on three outcomes for tonight's match, either;

0 - 1
1 - 1
or
1 - 2

Hmmm, might look at who else is throwing around some free bets and whack on a grouped correct score. Also noticed that decent value for a fairly safe bet is "No goal before 32mins" @ evens. Openers are generally cagey and the "underdog" usually wants to bust a gut. It's later in these games when the goals tend to come (a bit like FA Cup 3rd Rnd ties), so 32mins seems safe for a stalemate. They can go rampant after that. Maybe put on an in-play "Italy to Win" after that time and will get kinder odds for it too :hmmm:

I've also had a nibble on Italy not to keep a clean sheet tonight at even money (with Bet365). I know defensively they have been sound but Turkey can hurt them and I think there is a reasonable chance of being able to double up just if Turkey score a goal

Great offer from SkyBet!

Yeah you would expect him to score more than 3 goals in the tournament, so I will at least get my money back and be in with a chance of £75 if he manages to pop up with odd hattrick or something and actually win the Golden Boot.  I chose him based on their opposition in the Group stages, and potential opponents there on..  they should be good enough to go Q's or SF's

Italy looking good

They do but they look a bit too keen at the mo. They need to control that energy a bit more. They'll score, just need to be patient. 2nd half when Turkey have been worn down.

Impressed by Italy's high press though. Turkey can't get out of their own half bar goal kicks.

If Italy harness what they have, they'll grow into this tournament. Could easily be favourites albeit they have got to get it in the onion bag!

Interesting first half. Italy look threatening down the left with Spinazolla and Insigne. Turkey riding their luck a bit but sometimes that works out over 90 minutes.

Would quite fancy our chances of causing Italy some problems with quick forwards though - Sancho, Sterling or Rashford finding space between the very attacking left full back and the very old centre backs.

Italy would have about 70% possession mind.

Seven Nation Army. They play that in Deutschland a lot, so I can see why it might not be a novelty for you  ;D
