Title: Eurovision 2021
Post by: BambooToTheFuture on Friday, May 21, 2021, 14:12:41
Well here we go, vote away.

It's great asking something like this on here where the demographic is mostly "straight" white males but please, no arguments about which toilet people should piss in though.

Just good natured insults, as per  ;)

The missus loves it and her and her family have Eurovision parties and go the whole hog with fancy dress and what not. I don’t have strong feelings either way, so I’m sure we’ll be watching it and having a drink.

And in truth I’m only with her after her sharing her Conchita Wurst outfit. :jumpy:

Generally I avoid this like the plague but I think I'm going to give it a go this year.

We'll of course be consuming plenty of alcohol but the wife and I are going to choose our favourite 3 songs and i'll chuck a wager on each of those and see if we can win any money! Sadly Ireland didn't qualify so can't have any friendly rivalry with the wife and in-laws.

I suspect the UK and Israel won't be massively popular this year with our European friends and partners!

Always enjoy watching Eurovision. It's nonsense, but there are usually a few good laughs and one or two half decent songs, and it's a good excuse to get drunk.

Having voted Fuck off it’s as bad as half and half scarves, I’ve drawn Georgia in the neighbourhood make a dish and bring it over for a smorgasbord of various food and drinks with some of our neighbours. Will I be watching boom, bang a bang boom euro trash? Hell no. I’ll be watching a film or something about World War Two with the blokes on the other telly in their house while the women get pissed, moist and generally wankered on wine. You already know how the votes are going to be cast and we’ll end up with nil points again. Europe were only interested in our cash point card which has more or less expired thank fuck. Enjoy.

Ah Eurovision. A competition for Europe but paid for by the BBC, hence we automatically qualify each year. A competition we are guaranteed to finish last in forever as we are universally hated by all the other countries with Brexit the final nail in the coffin. Personally I think we should no longer be part of this shitshow and have the BBC stop funding it.

Its not just paid for by the BBC though is it? Contributions are made up from the participating broadcasters. Also, I'm pretty sure Bamboo didn't want this to deteriorate into some Brexit discussion.  ::)

TBH its a bit of a laugh and some of the songs are actually quite good, this years Portugal and Iceland are 2 tips, we watched the 2nd semi last night and it was entertaining. The UK entry is ok too.

We often watch it for a laugh and to watch and guess the tactical voting of the eastern european countries which makes a mockery of it being anything serious so we treat it as such. My best mates missus takes it seriously and has her Czech, Lithuanian and Polish neighbours round for it each year and really takes it serious much to our amusement.

And no I agree with FH its not the same without Wogan maye the great man rest in peace in his whiskey castle.

They are being allowed to perform as they are allowing the rehearsal as their live performance under "special circumstances".

FWIW I think Iceland will do well, its quirky nerds but catchy.

No apparently they have to sing live thats always been part of Eurovision rules, unlike TOTP and various "alleged" live perfomances in talk shows etc.

To be fair their effort last year was genuinely rather good. This year's seems very similar, but not quite as good.

Guilty pleasure, always has been since a little kid when we'd watch it as a family. Genuinely gutted we didn't get the Iceland win last year we 100% would have seen, I know it's the same guys this year but the song isn't as good.

It's definitely a guilty pleasure. Mocking the Mrs' home nation's song (that's generally better than ours) is also fun

For quite a few years a large bunch of friends had parties that really meant getting pi**ed and taking the pi** but eventually it became even too much of a farce to be enjoyable along those lines anymore.

Will probably return from the attitude adjustment centre this evening and watch through a slight haze and instantly forget who has won as it will not be the UK entry unless every other act is disqualified for offences against public safety.

Title: Re: Eurovision 2021

I'm kind of in the Nemo area of it all. For me it's just a load of fun and if (like Barry) I knew a few people who were up for a fancy dress, I would probably do so too.

It's definitely not something to get the tits in a twist about like Mr Orange mentions. Yep we know the voting is somewhat leans politically but I enjoy the ridiculousness of it all even more :)

Totally agree with comments re Wogan, quite tough for Norton to follow him even though he's been doing it around 10 years now! Wogan was something else, it's the equivalent of trying to recreate the two Ronnies for a sketch. I'm glad Norton hasn't tried to "be Wogan" though and he does a decent enough job of taking the piss :)

I was going to have a bet on both the UK and Israel getting nul points (nil pwah) but no doubt some from the UK will probably vote for Israel, handing them a few points.

The UK entry is quite good but this is Eurovision so you either go for the most trashy sounding song or the most banal, there you may find your winner! Anyway if you do watch it, enjoy and get slowly sloshed (or quickly) or if you can't stand it, enjoy and get slowly sloshed in the garden (whilst being pissed on no doubt).

As an aside, and for a bit of fun (which may translate as pain for some) my co-host and I are doing a "Rip It Up Podcast: Eurovision Special" where we'll briefly discuss the contest, pick out our favourites/most ridiculous/rubbish tracks and likely be wearing something orange. It will be quite interesting what my co-host makes of it all as he is an American so will probably wonder what on earth is going on, unless of course, it turns out he is one of Eurovision's biggest fan. I guess if you can be arsed, you'll have to tune in and find out.

Hope to put it out at around 7.30pm and will be just a 30ish min episode. Absolutely zero pressure to view, it's purely a "flash episode" but will post the link here for anyone interested. A bit like those who love the "all day build up" coverage to the FA Cup  ;D

Well the chicken in tomato and Coriander is ready, the two types of homemade bread, chilli & feta, cheddar & onion are in the oven as I type. So we’re now enjoying a pimped up king prawn cocktail to help lubricate the digestive system before some serious alcohol and piss taking starts soon.

Edit. Interestingly two out of the three countries cuisine on offer tonight are not in the final.

Agree, that was excellent. Hot Chip did a remix that got a fair bit of play too (although I don't think it was particularly an improvement). Not sure there was anything quite that catchy last night but the general standard was actually quite high, a distinct shortage of genuine shockers. Only really Germany, and they compensated by having a woman dressed as a middle finger.

Bill Bailey has volunteered, which frankly seems ideal as it would be actually funny and he's good at music.

Ultimately we keep sending middle of the road unknown pop acts and wondering why they fail. The guy yesterday was fine but I forgot it while it was still happening and even without political voting that was a bottom 6 entry. The Italian act that won has an actual established fanbase and two number 1 albums in Italy - I didn't really get it but it's clear a different tier of artist being sent.

Bit chicken and egg now I guess in that nobody decent would ever do it, so perhaps we need a few novelty acts to rebuild some goodwill (and perhaps not have Amanda Holden joking about not knowing anything about European languages) before sending someone half decent.

Anyway, it was good fun and good telly. As ever the best way to enjoy Eurovision is to switch off after the performances!

Title: Re: Eurovision 2021
Post by: BambooToTheFuture on Sunday, May 23, 2021, 13:06:12
Lolz, I watch it for the results part mostly. Just to see how much further the scoring gets away from the level of acts.

As for James Newman, love or hate him but he has written at least a couple of No.1 tracks and is pretty well known in the industry.

It wasn't a "Eurovision" song but then neither was the Italian and Swiss ones. All very niche. If anything Malta probably should have done much better on the public vote.

Who knew the more "anti Eurovision" types who enjoy Rock, Metal, Emo etc are actually the biggest closet fans  :)

There was quite a long thread on Twitter from a guy who knows about the mechanics of music (keys/BPM that sort of thing) noting that the style of winning songs has changed hugely in the last 20 years, but we keep on sending stuff of a style/composition which was the same as won all those years back, i.e. trends have changed and the Uk hasn't.

It amuses me how much it gets under the skin of many and feeds the perpetual victimhood of many on social media, I see on Sunday morning there was plenty of witterings about 'If we hadn't saved them from the Nazi's they couldn't have their silly competition' and much moaning of the cost and we shouldn't pay it as it isn't fair apparently.

I think it costs the BBC about c£400k for it, which seems pretty cheap for c.8-10 hours of primetime show which is watched by 5m+, you wouldn't get that sort of RoI on most primetime telly.

That is simply not true - the sound was poor and the staging diabolical. The trouble is the BBC do not put enough effort into actually trying to come up with someone worthy of winning.

Yeah I am inclined to agree with this. Other countries had put in a lot of time and effort with staging and costume and we turned up with a fella wearing a jacket and a pair of trousers too short for him and gave him 4 lads with a trumpet.

Lets chuck someone like Steps in and totally go overblown on the staging. We'd surely get more than 0 points that way.

I don't think you can compare Steps with Jemini can you? The total record sales as well as chart success is not comparable?

Ahh sorry, I was just referencing the style of music (and possibly outfits). I guess really, Jemini were just a very bad Steps tribute band but I suppose that is what most would say After the Love Has Gone :)
