Title: STFC vs Portsmouth MoM
Post by: Red Frog on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, 19:03:33
Players liberated by a system that actually relieves pressure on our patched-up defence and creates proper opportunities for our strikers.

Players putting in that extra yard of effort.

Players doing a proper job out of their natural positions.

Competition for the MoM.

All too feckin late, thanks to malignant tumours Sheridan and Power. :crash:

Tyler Smith - he carried a threat all game and worried the living daylights out of their defence.  The fact he was awful with the ball at times is offset by just how much that did for the team in the end - it gave us a way out, a way of stopping a team from just dominating and being comfortable.  If only we'd kept with him all season and had players gradually figure out the right balls to play to his strengths.  And he scored, and had one saved and won a penalty and shanked a lob, and so on.

Camp made some good saves.
Smith caused them no end of problems with pace and took his goal well.

But I thought Pitman was superb tonight. Goals aside it was still his best ever game in a town shit.

My ratings are only really for what I saw in the second half. Tuned in for the first on a phone after 20 mins.

Camp 8
-   Made several excellent saves, including a full length dive to his left. He provides so much confidence at the back. If he’d been here all year we would have been on the edge of the play offs at least. A strong candidate for MotM again, as he has been every game

Thompson 6
-   Caught out of position a couple of times and played some awful balls up field. However, was trying tonight and defended pretty well on the whole

Grounds 6
-   Quiet game. Didn’t see him do anything wrong

Grant 6
-   Won lots of headers from corners. Relatively quiet game which is good

Garrick 7
-   Thought he defended really well. He snuffed out their left side, even though he was often doubled up on. Good performance

Missilou 5.5
-   Broke up play and helped the defence

Palmer 6
-   Broke up lots of play.

Payne 6
-   Looked a little off his game tonight. Couple nice nicks and flicks, but some pretty poor passing too. Also, totally wrong footed the defence with a comedy goal give away too.

Twine 5
-   Disappointing evening. Main contribution what to be smacked in the face. Showed his vision with some lovely passes, but they were few and far between, as he didn’t get hold of the game.

T Smith 8
-   I’d quite like to sign him. He tries very hard. He’s very rough and ready, but he’s got something about him. He’s about 2 years behind Yates I recon.

Pitman 6
-   Played walking pace football for most of the half. Missed a chance that I thought he would have scored if he hadn’t been ambling – The ball was behind him, but he didn’t react quickly. Offered absolutely nothing for much of the half, then pulled out a fantastic piece of control and ball through to enable Smith to get a penalty.

Subs:
Hope 6
-   Did well to intercept a pass and lay on a beautiful through ball for Smith to score. But, other than that, I didn’t think he offered much going forward and didn’t help Garrick as much as he could have in defending.

Broadbent N/A
-   Not on long enough to influence the game. Although, the fact that they didn’t score means he must have done his job.

Pitman played well and probably would have got it if he managed to score when Smith played the ball just behind him in the first half, his pass for Smith for the penalty was brilliant.

Garrick played well 2nd half but poor first half so not consistant enough.

Camp again made a few good saves.

Grounds and grant both started slowly but made some amazing blocks and tackles.

But overall for me the effort Smith put in all game, although has was lacking a bit in quality and sharpness at times probably due to his lack of matches, he made the difference, and he took his goal so well. So he just edges it for me.

I watched the highlights on youtube this morning. If you are a Pompey fan you have to be livid at your defence. BP was just allowed to bring the ball down with nobody challenging him. Great play by him to put Smith in though wasn't it?

I know a few and they say they have been like that most of the season, their overall lack of quality surprised me, like they werent up for it.

Pompey defence looked like ours has almost all of the season, loads of mistakes and not a great keeper behind them giving them any confidence.

Smith and Pitman linked up so well, Pitman does need to run around much if he has a player like Smith alongside of him, play to their strengths something Sheridactyl never did.

Which makes it all the more bizarre why they weren't paired together more often. I know Wright said Smith had been injured a lot but that sounds like an excuse. I know we were pretty bad against Wimbledon but at least with BP and Smith up front we looked much more dangerous.

I went Pitman.  2 goals (1st was a cracker) and the majority of Tylers chances coming through Pitman's play nudged me towards Pitman over Smith.
