God this is going to be a terrible game of football isn't it? Both sides setting up to play direct football, one side who have the nous, attributes and players to do it, and they don't play in red.

Another miserable home defeat in the offing. Can't really see anything else. I know I stated before when the remaining fixtures were outlayed that I saw points on offer, but given Oxford came to the CG off a poor run of form and came flying out of the traps whereas we just sat back and feebly surrendered, I suspect that may be the way the rest of the season pans out now. That said, Anthony Grant looked hungry, perhaps getting him back might get some of the other players to perform a bit better, a catalyst I guess.

Yep BO it is, the away game we dominated but they had the right players for their brand of football and beat us even though we played the far better football on the day.

The same will not be said about the game tomorrow, we will go a goal down early doors and lose despite a heroic fightback by hoofing the ball up to Pitman at every opportunity and then concede in the 2nd half killing the game off.

When you look at the strikers they have in Oliver, Akinde and Samuel they can all play the target man role well at this level and thats how they play.

They are on a fair run and sit currently in 13th place with a last 16 run of  form of WDWDWDLWLWWLDWWL.

In fairness, when Wellens made him captain I thought it strange to be lumping the responsibility on someone who was getting back from a serious injury. He needed to concentrate on purely playing. That's no disrespect to Conroy, I like him; it was an error by his manager at the time.

I always thought either Caddy or Grant would've been given the armband. Especially at the start of this season. They are both natural leaders.

But yes, interesting to see indeed that the "favourite" (Palmer) has been dropped. I still reckon movements are happening behind the scenes. It feels like a bit of a freshen up to refocus minds...I don't think that is the doing of El Dino.

Given the players available, that is the closest team selection that Sheridan (or somebody else) has picked to what I feel is our current strongest team - so that to me is a positive and refreshing thing.

Maybe things are starting to move in the background, nobody knows but positive signs all the same.

Still think we will lose, just due to the confidence and mindset of the team at the moment.

He's much better than many of the keepers we've had this season. He's the kind of back up (in the LMc role) we should have been targeting. I don't think he's as poor as you say Duke but there's no doubt Camp is coming to the end of his career (like LMc). He can still offer us something more and in the team environment as a whole.

 As I say, people I know have very close links with Lee and Mick so it will be interesting if I can find out anything regards to what his Camp's next steps might be :)

RE: Conroy. I don't think this will hurt him as much. He's still been selected. That would be the destroying factor imo. I think he possibly could be a good captain one day but right now I don't think he's probably mentally good enough to take it. We have to remember the lad nearly had his career ended. Corona happening probably brought him the recovery time and chance to get back into the squad, that he may not have got if it had been a normal season.

I want him to focus on developing his game as a quality CB. The captaincy can come again. A drive to win it back if he really wants it too. I agree though that Sheridan isn't the man to develop his game :)


I agree. That team on paper should be good enough for mid table at least, under the right guidance. It's the first time we've seen a true "freshening up" that doesn't make you go "what the fuck is that squad". I hear you on the potential that the team might  not be all there in mind yet but for some reason I have the positive vibe that Town can get this match over the line; preferably over the Gills goal line :)

Town's concentration issues seem to be early on and late on in any half.
0-5mins, 40-45+mins, 45-50mins and 85-90+mins are key areas for Town in deciding if they take anything from a match.
If that can be shored up, that's potentially around a quarter of the match time dealt with in Town's favour.

Apart from that, it was a shit half!

I was going to post a similar story - fucking atrocious football, zero intelligence, feared for us in the second half against the wind playing this way.  Garrick a threat until he has to pass or cross, Pitman isolated, Broadbent and Conroy passing to their keeper as they are just hitting it without thinking etc.

The two players I was going to call out were Lyden and Grant, they are both so clearly desperate to get possession and try and pick passes off.

Then came the goal, something that could have come from last season with Doyle finishing it off.  If we let the midfield have the ball in the second half we have a chance.  If we insist on what we did for the other 40 odd minutes, we could still be under pressure.  Lets hope someone saw the way that worked and how good those two look on the ball.

Before the goal, with the wind you really should be putting their keeper under significant pressure and working him hard, of which we never did. He must have took 10+ goal kicks from long balls over judged and the standard of crossing is extremely poor. always seem to be behind the player.

The goal was superb, such composure. A nervous half ahead with the wind. Just imagine getting a 2nd goal and having a comfortable match!..

I believe; There is a protocol at the moment to do with the disinfected balls dotted around the pitch. The gills player picked up a disinfected one off the cone when he should have used the live ball next to it. Players are briefed before the game and I think caddis was proving the point but it was very strange to see it bother him that much and you should be having the ref on your side ready for the timewasting that will come later on.

Alternative commentary: we were much better that half than in the last three games. Scrappy game against similarly modest opposition, but we're frequently passing out accurately from the back - at least when we stop the centre-halves lumping it. As a result, the midfield have been much more influential, and Grant and Lyden are frankly a huge upgrade on Palmer and Payne. Trueman has been sharp, and tried some good quick throws out, Garrick has the LB in his pocket which has brought Caddis into attacking positions behind him, though delivery has been challenging in the wind. Thompson is quick and has made some very important tackles. No-one has played badly that half, though not much has gone through Joel G and Dion has looked a little off the pace.

Now we'll see if we can do it into the wind.

Not really, when there is a strong wind shooting towards the bank is always a massive advantage. Our defenders have failed to deal with any strikers this season and against 2 absolute monsters with a strong wind behind them was always going to beyond them as is now showing.... spectacularly. I'd have disagreed a few months back, not now.  The players are ruined.  They have been asked to play football by numbers, berated from the touchline every week and likely delivered little by way of quality coaching.  Confidence has completely sapped.  Anyone coming in would cry after their first training sessions I imagine.  We are done for.  A large thank you to Sheridan for helping me get over Flitcroft - there really are Managers who I can despise more.

Bar a brief moment of 2019-2020 football, that was god fucking awful again.  A few chances as Gillingham popped their feet up on the desk,  They showed us how to play in that weather if you only want to go long.  Keep it tight when playing against the wind, have two lumps up top and a few players able to break forward around them when playing into the wind.  Not having a single centre forward who is not that mobile nor a target man.

Garrick was his usual self.  J Grant non existent - why would he be, not a player made for that type of football.  Brett, Brett, Brett, Brett Brett, Brett, Brett, Brett Pitman, Brett Pitman, Brett Brett, Brett, Brett, Brett Pitman, Brett Pitman doing what he does - likely to score if given a chance, likely to be a peripheral figure other than that.  Lyden and Grant looked useful when we played football, not going to add much when bypassed.  Defenders looked panicked - which is what happens when you just keep giving the ball away and having to defend, especially when the other team have presence around them.  Fullbacks pointless, just clogging it, not using either of their abilities.  Twine is like a Special Teams player in NFL, no chance of being able to influence the game other than set pieces because he isn't going to get the ball in space, on the front foot, with good possession.

Shambolic really.  Night and Day from the way we played last season, night and day from the structure we showed last season.  Any of us could put a team out this way.

Sheridan's sub-standard, of course.  But Power's ownership is the illness affecting the club.  Sheridan, who would have lost his job some weeks/months ago in more normal times, is simply a symptom of the illness.  Until Power moves on, nothing will change.

Well the penny has dropped with El Dino unless he is on some serious level of trolling. If so, give him an Oscar. The tone certainly sounded like it was the epiphany we have been waiting for...

Difficult to answer those questions as a player but interesting comments from PPP. I think he showed the stark difference in media management/engagement. Calm and fairly clear, even if you could hear that it was a tough interview for him.

Back on the manager, I have respect that he's come out and actually faced Hawes as well as answered the burning question. But he threw it all away yet again, by being hypocritical in his assessment. He says he won't blame any players and blames himself but then goes on to say he would always look at himself when he was playing, and that to remember he doesn't cross the white line. It's sly as fuck in that he's essentially saying he doesn't like the way the game is today and actually admitted he's old school.  Those that evolve with change are those that generally succeed. He's admitted he isn't fit for modern management as he can't adapt to modern attitudes and values. It's unfortunate for him but he has to do the honourable thing and go. Despite what Pitman said in his interview, as I believe he played the party line in an almost pristine response to the media, the dressing room must mostly be severely fractured.

How it has taken him this long to come to this decision of self reflection? It's not good. I said ages back I would prefer he stepped away and focused on his off field issues and it was stated with sincerity. Time to say goodbye (extreme trolling proviso pending).

Right, now appoint someone with future proofing in the sense of next season in mind. Use these games to figure out who really gives a shit and wants a contract here. If we stay up, that's an added bonus but the appointment should be someone who will be the manager next season, none of this short sighted bollocks. Yes. Sheridan is doing a job, as long as his employer says he is fine, he’ll keep earning. I am quite fucked off about the fact that we are referring to a human. Some of what I see is pretty embarrassing. We all have self perception, esteem and feelings. The problem isn’t the manager. I am sure he knows that he is doing a shit job. Some of you need to take a look in the mirror. The man has clearly had a 12 months to forget. I also have compassion on a human level. Shame some others don’t.

I imagine most on here have suffered personal problems of one sort of another.

It doesn’t excuse his behaviour or the shit job he’s done.

You simply can not defend Sheridan. The same players at the start of the season played well within a style of play and more importantly pattern of play. We should have clocked up a lot more points yes but individual errors lost us those. Style of play did not.

He completely tore up the style from the minute he walked in the door. And subsequently removed players and recruited without significant change. We ground out some points last month but there was certainly no effective formation to it.

He trains this team, he has had long enough to know the players and find a balance that works.

If our full backs get the ball it either goes long and we generally lose possession or he finds the LM/RM who then has no overlap and passes backwards or goes long again to an isolated one man unit up top.

You look at the teams he throws together after all these months and you just can't see any substance.

The season is now almost certainly over unless something changes. A change gives us hope and we need hope instead of trying every week to get a fluke result.

You can forgive players for individual mistakes IF the rest of the match backs it up. We don't dominate teams, we don't control the play, we don't attempt to make triangles of play to progress forwards and on top of that we make individual mistakes.

It’s been shit. We all know that. But I am sure like me he has a house to keep and bills to pay. The fault is the chairman. He is the wanker that is sending this club under.

I know the players have to do it on the pitch but I think you have to give them a little bit of slack. To have to completely change the way you have been trained to play under Wellens to some kind of direct hot potato stuff that they are clearly unable to is a huge challenge.

Its like being employed to dig holes and then your manager changes and the new manager takes away your shovel and gives you a toothbrush.

I don't blame the players at all. Every team in any business is a manifestation of the support, resource and leadership they're given, and these boys are given nothing.

I’ve not heard the interview, but is it perhaps collective wishful thinking that his consideration will inevitably have the outcome we’re all wanting? What is said in the immediate aftermath of another spineless performance isn’t necessarily going to reflect action taken after time to reflect, and he’s been consistently dogmatic in his self-belief to date.

It's clearly the right thing for all parties to move on. I have some sympathy with Sheridan on a basic human level but the simple fact is that he's treated the local press, fans and players terribly and it's hard not to think that what goes around comes around.

I don't expect us to stay up, but an interim Peacock or Hunt or Caddis restoring a bit of order and just generally not being a prick all the time would do me fine. If the results come, fine, but just give the club back a bit of dignity.

Sounded like he'd already made his mind up to me. His first answer about the game ended with "i need to consider my position now". Very much seemed like it was already on his mind to me.

I think the basic human level you mention is what Boy About Town was getting at earlier. Sheridan has been garbage, no two ways about it. And he doesn't deserve any immunity from the criticism that he's copped, its 100% deserved. But if he goes I would think and hope we'd wish him well and forget about his time here inasmuch as that's possible. His personal life has been rocked and he should go and concentrate on that.

Also, Lee Peacock is a great shout. At least we'd go down with somebody that actually cares that we've gone down.

Yep, Hawes never pressed, prompted or even offered the question to Sheridan. It was all on his own admission. There wasn't even any nipple twisting from Hawes either, he didn't need to. Sheridan was essentially stood there with jump leads on his nipples and applying the voltage to boot.

If something like that were to arise, it puts that all on JS because essentially he's inferred he may walk and serious about it. If others ask him to stay, he's not honouring his true feelings if he were completely honest. Of course feelings/minds/decisions change - this doesn't seem like it will change though and he will walk.

It will be the minimum of respect noted if he does indeed decide to go.

Yeah I hear ya. For example for 2 centre backs to not have a clue who should be marking their best player and best headerer of a ball is ludicrous. The last 2 games we've given a number of free headers to their tallest players. The Oxford CB who got the free header had nobody within about 5 yards of him and Akinde and Oliver also had the freedom of the CG penalty box. I guess confidence is so low that nobody is taking any responsibility and they end up blaming each other.

Wholly agree and tbc I do think the players are well down the list in terms of who's to blame. I've repeatedly said I don't think this is a bad squad, they've just been badly managed. We certainly should have enough to not be in the shit we're in.

Without doubt and the style is the polar opposite to what was instilled into the players last season.
I watch this shit every week and struggle to know what formation and what tactics are being implemented. The boot up field almost laughable and even that is not being carried out effectively with the Pork Pie and Garrick playing with such a distance between them.

But Banbury is entitled to his opinion. Not not like camp is a fresh faced rookie nobody has seen before!

Of course he is entitled to his opinion but the speed at which he gets down seems quite a specific thing to criticise him for when I imagine (please correct me if I’m wrong) there is no measurable data on that stat only.

Like, it’s easy to stay a striker doesn’t score enough goals, a winger doesn’t create enough chances so on and so on.

As we’ve seen previously (Nalis, Whalley) having a lengthily career at Championship level doesn’t mean you’ll be decent dropping down a level but you also must have something about you to stay in the Championship that long.

I would imagine there is plenty of data these days on where a goalkeeper gets beaten, or if he parries then where that goes to.

That data alone won't tell you root-cause, there could be mitigating factors e.g. every single shot is hit low because he is super good at getting to high shots.

I saw someone on Twitter describe Lee Camp as having "pastry hands". It made me chuckle, I myself will reserve judgement though, a bit of experience in nets might be just what we need.
